Imogen posted that some--not all--X shapes (hourglass), as they gain weight, turn into H shapes (rectangle). I'm not sure if this would be true of Figure 8 shapes or not, but I imagine so. When I put on weight, I notice I start to look less like an hourglass and more like an H, though I have not gained a significant enough amount of weight to know how much of an H I'd become if I were a lot heavier. I recently lost about 10 pounds, and most of it seems to have come off my waist. Interestingly, this is more noticeable from the side view than it is from the front.

Without overthinking this whole thing, my guess is that you're a Figure 8 hourglass, as you appear to have a high hip. While my overall height and measurements are almost identical to yours (I'm 5 ft. 2 in. tall; 38-28-38), my waist is higher, my rise is longer, and my hip line is slanted. I'm a Figure X hourglass. For more info. on the Figure 8 and Figure X body shapes, visit

You are considered petite. To figure out if you're short waisted or not, visit

I agree. I think you are first an hourglass with a touch of rectangle. I would also think you are a petite.

I don't think your waist is especially short or long either, lucky you!

Can you tell us if you have any belly pooch at all? That could mean hourglass with secondary apple type. Or if you've a relatively flat tum (and we're not talking washboard abs, even a slightly rounded soft curve is fine!), you're very likely a rectangle as the indentation in your waist is not very deep at the sides, more a shallow curve. (A side view would help!)

Hi Greeneyes,

I would say you are an Hourglass, and maybe secondary Apple when you are not at your 'ideal weight'.
I believe that Petite clothes are for those below 5'4'' so you are right there.

A lovely balanced shape so I don't think you are short or long waisted I.M.H.O.

I'm sure that most styles look great on you!

My measurments are 37 bust, 28 waist, 37 hip. I am 5'1 1/2".. Although these measuments seem hourglass, when i look at my front-on photo it looks like i am rectangularish. what do think? i am around 119lbs lately though. little more than usual.
also would my height be considered petite? ive been confused to wether I am "petite" or not? and am I short or long waisted?? thank u.
