I'm sorry: I'm long waisted with a defined waist, and belts don't move on me at all (either up & down or side to side): they just stay where I put them (assuming I've belted at the smallest point of my waist). I don't have any advice there, but it sounds really annoying. Looking at your photo, the smallest point of your waist is much higher than mine: perhaps you're short waisted & that's what's messing with the belts? So look for short waisted tips? (I think the shortcut way to tell is how many hand widths you can fit-with fingers together, not splayed-between the bottom of your bust & the smallest point of your waist. 2 is average; less would be short waisted, more would be long waisted. I can fit 3 full hand withs easily. Here's the post.)

Also, the forum is a great resource. If you're not sure about rise for instance, take the time to pose in a few different rise options (make sure the photos are clear enough that we can compare) and ask for input. It's true there's some weird contradictory info out there! Have you read Angie's latest body type posts? They're SO informative & helpful: I learned something from reading all of them, even the ones that don't match my type.

Thanks E, I will. I definitely think I'm elliptical. Hopefully Angie has a solution for keeping belts in one place! Unless I'm using belt loops my belts end up moving about all over my torso.

Hi Amy!

Definitely read up on the round vs elliptical thing: I had such a break through when I realised I'm mainly elliptical (I do have a round tush, but that's the exception).

Other than that, Angie has a ton of advice for body modifiers on her blog.

I used to have a problem with belts too. They made me look really out of proportion because of my short torso. What really helped me was to wear low-rise pants with a skinny belt (as opposed to a wide belt). I also found that the waistband of bottoms fit better if the rise was lower—there wasn't so much gapping at the waist.

If you search in the blog section of the site, I believe Angie has quite a few posts on how to wear belts. I found them very helpful.

Thanks everyone for your replies.

Inge - my shoulders are a bit broader than my hips but not dramatically.

I've just downloaded the style book app mentioned in another thread and am busily photographing my wardrobe to help give me a visual for putting together, hopefully flattering, outfits. I certainly feel my shape has changed a bit since having my son (definitely the hips!) which I'm trying to adjust to and find combinations that give me the long, lean line that appeals to me.

Maybe I'll manage to fall in love with belts but for now I simply wear then to stop my pants falling down!

Hourglass.

Just chiming in: hourglass is about your shoulder width being similar to your hip width with a nipped in waist. Bust and bum are separate from that.

Enjoy showing off your gorgeous shape!!

Hi Amy,

To determine bodyshape it's more about shoulder width versus hip width, you can be an hourglass with a small, medium or larger bust.

It's a bit hard to tell from the photo because you only have one arm down, but it seems that your shoulders are wider than your hips? If so, I'd say inverted triangle with hourglass as secondary body type. If shoulder and hip width are about the same, I vote hourglass too.

I agree, hourglass with most of your hip width side-to-side rather than front to back. I think it's Imogen Lamport at Inside Out Style that talks about elliptical versus round figures - i.e. which dimension we are widest in, which doesn't always show in 2-D photos from the front. She also talks about 8 hourglasses versus X hourglasses - you look like an X to me, with a gentle slope from waist to hip rather than an abrupt hip shelf like 8's like me have. I can imagine how that makes fit and flare dresses/skirts tricky - if the hip shape doesn't fit yours, there's going to be excess fabric and it's going to be unflattering.

I say hourglass with a short waist with long legs. Very much like me! My weight has always gone to my hips, but in the past few years, I've seen plenty around my tummy as well. I have found that a short rise with a more fluid top that is semi-tucked is the best silhouette on me. The low rise makes my upper body more proportional. The flowy top hides the tummy. And the semi-tuck seems to balance my hips very well. I don't have any WIW pics on my tablet, but you can look back at my posts to see the transition from mid-rise with untucked tops to low rise with semi-tucks.

You have a lovely figure!
I would think you were a cross between a rectangle and a hourglass. You could take much of the rectangle advice but since you do have a defined waist you could play this up at times.

Would love your thoughts.

From this photo I think I look hourglass and yet I'm very flat chested with a flat rear end. I have broad shoulders with a prominent collarbone, a short body with a long line and legs. I'm not straight up and down, though I do have long limbs. Through the bust and torso I'm pretty square and I carry weight on my midsection. Fit and flare and wrap dresses look awful on me, bottoms never stay up and tend to slide, and belts make me look cylindrical.

Like many others the numbers don't seem to add up for me and different calculators label me different body types. While I don't want to get too hung up on it I definitely find the uncertainty frustrating as my conflicting features lead to conflicting advice eg. Short body, wear low rise bottoms/ carry weight on mid section, avoid low rise.
