Interesting!!
Mani - what sort of curves did you get from swimmingg

I should point out that after I wrote on this thread last night and went to bed I took a quick look in the mirror and didn't look the same. I think the *gasp* look is just when I am wearing black bike pants!!

Oh yeah. I thought I was an apple, but then after actually taking measurements realized that I am shaped more like an hourglass (or really an "8").

When I had a consult with a personal stylist, she raved about my figure, which was a real surprise, & talked me into trying on more clothes to show off my curves. I think I had focused solely on my stomach pooch & was ignoring everything else.

I started running seriously a few years ago but did not really keep track or notice how my body was changing,. One day, I put on my denim skirt with a pair of heels and was shocked to see my legs -- which I'd always been a little embarrassed about -- had a distinct shape and, actually, looked quite good. Pleasant surprise!

I remember this happening most vividly when I started swimming. Largely because I did not EXPECT to build curves from that activity, but golly...!

Now I feel this way when I encounter my bare upper arms and jowl in photos and mirrors. This is more straightforward body dysmorphia, though --- I just don't want them to be there!

I realized I was a proper hourglass just recently. I was more of a slim apple part hourglass all through my 20's and now at 32 I'm just hourglass. Works for me though! I found out because I noticed that my weighing scale was not reflecting what my clothes were! I thought I'd lost weight and could see it on the scales, yet my jeans and skirts fit the same! It took a measuring tape to confirm.

I don't know that they are extra curves,. I think they have always been there and I just forget about them!
Here is an old photo of me in workout gear (about a year old)
And here is a recent photo with a straight silhouette

Are you comfortable with the extra curves? Do you feel good about them? If you feel good about the way you look, then I don't think you need to worry. :)

And post pics!

i think the reason I got a shock was that I have a small bust and leanish upper torso. And I thought, slimish hips. If I just look at the top half ( say in the bathroom mirror) I look quite straight. Indeed I have identified my secondary body type as rectangle..

And I look quite straight in many of my outfits

I guess I had assumed that if I put on weight around the waist I would have got straighter still - but it seems that my lower half was keeping pace !

This is not to say I am over my "weight range" - more about a sort of sense of body identity.

I think it happened once last year too, when I was staying in a hotel room with mirrored section of wall and caught myself in tights and a close fitting top.

I don't really know what the implications of it are though!

Every so often I have a look at myself and suddenly get a shock. Today I was dressed in quite formfitting clothes to go the gym (bike shorts and a fitted long tank) and was struck on glancing in the mirror at how curvy I was on the bottom half.

I have been pretty slack on the exercise front for a while, but I was only conscious that my waist has pushing the boundaries of some of my skirts - I always seem to not be aware that my hips etc may have increased as well. I can't find my tape measure so I don't objectively know.

I would have taken a pic but can't find my camera!

Anyway, do you ever get these shocks?
