Ana on "blonde highlights??"

Shiny, I usually get my hair cut every 5-6 weeks, and you're right, I alternate cuts and cut/highlight appointments, so I get cut/highlight, cut, cut/highlight, etc (usually). How frequently you get your hair cut does depend on the cut. I usually have my stylist whack it off pretty good, and then when 6 weeks hits, I feel like it's just about time to get it cut again (maybe just starting to drive me a little crazy or misbehave). If Bobby doesn't cut enough off for some reason, then 6 weeks is too long and I'm really struggling to get it to do what I want by the next cut. I think I'm going to have him do my bangs a little differently, so I wonder if I will need to get them trimmed more frequently. I hope not, since it takes about 40 minutes to drive to see him.

Marianna, Bayalage varies in price, I think, depending on who is doing it for you. I've had foils and bayalage, and I like bayalage better because it looks more natural with my slightly darker hair. They each cost the same amount at my salon. I would ask around and see if you can get an estimate, since it seems to vary a lot depending on the salon and expertise of the colorist.

Melanie, you and I are thin hair sisters!!!!

I have read (somewhere) that the lighter your hair, the thinner it looks. And yet, I know without a doubt my hair absolutely looks thicker when it has some color - whether highlights or lowlights or anything at all. It really does change the texture, and makes it thicker - not just *look* thicker. Does that make sense and can you relate?

As for dullness, this is an age thing, no matter what your hair color. Coloring (not necessarily highlighting - any coloring) can help add shine. For example, this glaze I got recently has added a lot of shine - but darkened my color. If it was just dark without shine, yuck. But, if it's just light without shine... well, you may end up with way too much contrast and it might jar with your skin tone, which also gets dull with age (check out Imogen's recent blog on insideoutstyle... it was a revelation to me!).

So what I *might* try first is to ask your stylist to give you shine. Like a glaze. See how that works. That may be all you need. If you want more, then try highlights, but just one shade and just a few...

In other words, proceed cautiously! Because it can be tough to try to go backwards. That is where I feel I am right now with my stylist.

Ana, you still get your hair cut between colors though, right?

Very curious because one of these days I'm going as short as you... been very very VERY tempted for a long while... but one thing that stops me is that when I've had my hair that short in the past, I seemed to need to get it cut much more frequently. That doesn't fit my lifestyle.

Do tell! (though I may not respond for a week...)

I haven't heard of balayage but I think it looks good, I like the pictures. If it comes to England, I'll try it. Thank you.

Ana, I've heard of that (and seen it on makeover shows)! Is it a lot more expensive than traditional highlights? I'll have to ask my hair stylist if she does that... good idea.

Well this is all really great advice and information, thank you. I'll try the Aveda purple shampoo and the squiggly parting, but I don't think I'll go darker because my hair is really flat, dull and thin without highlighting and I've had rather nasty comments about my natural assets too. My daughter has just said that I should be grateful that my thin hair is accompanied by thin hair elsewhere so I don't have to wax arms, legs and spend money and time on that. Thanks for the good news about your mum Louise and hello back to you Medusa!

Melanie, great advice from Shiny and welcome to the forum!

Marianna, I get balayage highlights done:

http://www.balayage.com/

The idea behind these are that the darker portions (roots) are a purposeful part of the coloring, so when it grows out, it's not as noticeable. I still feel best when I have my hair highlighted every 8 weeks, but I can go as long 12 weeks before I start feeling pretty rough (I'm there now, I get highlights again next Friday, and I'm really excited).

I naturally have mousy light brown hair. One hairdresser (that I never went back to) called my natural color "dirty" brown. It's just a dull, flat color. I've been highlighting it blond for a couple years now and generally, 2 months is my MAX before I have to get it re-done... but 6 weeks is optimal. Any longer than 2 months and I feel like I look a mess and my roots are very visible. I also have grey eyes.

I have a hair appointment next week and I'm going to ask my stylist if there is anything I can do to lengthen the time between appointments. Getting my highlights done every 6 weeks is getting really expensive. I wouldn't mind going back closer to my natural color with fewer blond highlights if I could get my hair done less often.

We have some hairdressers on the forum who are best equipped to answer - I can only tell you my own personal experience!

I can go a lot longer between highlights if the highlights are only 1, at most 2, shades lighter than my natural color. I.e., very subtle highlights. The roots are just not as noticeable as they grow out, and the hair color fades.

The past 6 months or so, my hairdresser went maybe 3-4 shades lighter? It seemed so to me. The roots were much more noticeable - beyond my preference. But one trick I have learned from hairdressers is to part your hair assymetrically (a zig-zag part) - this makes the roots not so noticeable.

With that said, I can still only go about 8 weeks, absolute tops! Even if the roots are subtle, my hair just simply goes flat at the crown, without the benefit of some dye. Hair coloring changes the texture of my hair in a positive way, and even if I was to stick to my natural mousy shade, I'd probably still get it colored, just for the texture and shine boost.

To eek out 8 weeks, I use shampoo designed for gray hair. Try Aveda. It is purple. It combats brassiness. It's a bit drying so only use it once or twice a week, not every day.

My VFGF Jane has her hair highlighted (in something like 6 shades of lowlights and subtle highlights). She has it done only twice a year. Her hair is long. It grows out gracefully, but then again, she's stuck to shades that are close to her natural color. Also, she only shampoos once a week! I'm always amazed when people can go that long between shampoos. I can't. But with hair color, the less you shampoo, the better.

A big hello first since I'm a new subscriber. What a lovely forum and Angie is so generous with her fashion tips. For an uncertain, middle aged but defiantly vain girl of a certain age like me, this site with all its pictures and ideas is manna from Heaven.

I have mousey hair and have been having it highlighted to a Shiny-esque blonde colour for years. I think having lighter hair works for me with my light skin tone and blue/green/grey eyes but it looks dull at the top after about a month and then I go to have my hair retouched. Others I've spoken to only seem to go every couple of months and I'm wondering if I am super fussy or this is normal. My hair does seem to grow like a lanky weed and it just seems necessary!
