Yowza, Cookie. That story takes the cake. I think that is exactly the kind of extreme attitude that Tim is addressing with his comments. PS. Your gold dress sounds so fab.

I agree with Tim. I don't grocery shop dressed for the opera, but you won't ever see me in sweats unless I'm at home, working out on my elliptical. There IS a happy medium and I have found it: Great jeans, nice top, funky shoes and accessories - this is my daily uniform.

Bravo, Tim Gunn! I think there are many levels of comfort. To be honest, if I wanted total comfort, I'd probably be naked (well, maybe I would like a bra). Speaking of bras, I remember seeing a bra fitter (maybe it was the Intimacy founder??) talking about how women are so hell-bent on comfortable bras that the compromise totally on support, shaping etc. Especially when you are well-endowed, a well-fitting, supportive bra is supposed to fit snug and it might even feel a little uncomfortable for most people who are used to wearing a much too large band size!

I agree with Tim. I am tired of seeing people in public dressed like they are ready for bed. PJ bottoms, slippers, it's ridiculous. There are plenty of fabrics and options available that are comfortable without wearing bedroom wear or sweats in public.

I saw a perfect example of what Mr. Gunn is talking about on Saturday evening. I attended a party in a very new, very upscale restaurant. We had a private dining room and the setting was stunningly beautiful - dark woods, china, crystal, hundreds of candles, soft music. I wore a gold lace dress and felt most appropriate. But two women (a mother and daughter) showed up in shorts! The mother had on denim shorts and a t-shirt and was inappropriate in one way but the daughter - wow. Her shorts were inappropriate in a whole different way. When this girl walked in to the restaurant she was stopped by the hostess who thought she was a "working girl" from the strip club two blocks over! Her shorts were the tightest and shortest I have ever seen. She looked like she was wearing a bikini bottom. And she paired these with 5 inch heels. I do not think she would have been allowed in if we had not been in a private room where the other customers were somewhat shielded from this girl's outfit. But here is the clencher. When the mother saw how the rest of us were attired, she said "We don't care how we look - we want to be COMFORTABLE"! The fact that they were inappropriate, rude, and embarrassing to the rest of us did not matter. It was sad.

Oh, I do love Tim Gunn. I know for myself, in my pre-YLF days, I was firmly in the comfort camp. What I came to realize was comfort was a code word I used to say 'I don't care about myself, I don't deserve to look nice, and I'm going to do everything I can to hide myself from the world.' There was a lot more to it than just physical comfort. Emotionally, I was more comfortable hiding myself and my body. Now comfort has a different meaning for me. Being comfortable means being appropriately dressed for the day, putting some effort into my appearance, and in general caring more about me. Whereas before I would leave the house wearing any old thing, I am decidely uncomfortable if I am not at least somewhat put together when I leave the house. If I am at home cleaning or gardening or working on a messy project and have to run an errand for a needed item, I am NOT comfortable going out to the store in my 'work' gear.

Yup. I agree with Tim, lack of respect for yourself is shown in how you dress and also how you interact with others. Taking the due time to look appropriate in your environment is so important or else why bother to even wash in the mornings?

Being uncomfortable is different from being comfortable- I am comfortable in my everyday clothes. I can walk or ride a bike, etc. but I'm comfier in pajamas. But I SLEEP in pajamas. I interact with people in my clothes. Difference? Yes!

I love Tim Gunn and I think he's absolutely right.

He's definitely not saying we all need to wear girdles and 4 inch heels everywhere, just to put a little effort into getting dressed each day instead of showing up for everything in sweats and a t-shirt.

Remember when kids had school clothes AND play clothes? Shouldn't adults have a similar system? Clothes that are for going out and clothes that are for staying in?

What Khris said. I don't think he is saying that one needs to be uncomfortable. I think what he is saying is that it's not appropriate or even socially healthy to expect the same degree of comfort in your day to day life as you experience when you're sleeping or lounging around the house. It's lazy, undisciplined, and rude.

I don't think that either of you do actually disagree- reread the quote. He doesn't say that you should feel uncomfortable, he says that proper clothing is less comfortable than pajamas- and it's true. I think it's a major reason that the demise of manners has gone hand in hand with the demise of more formal every day attire.

I'm going to be the lone dissenter. While I don't like to see people wearing their pajamas in public, I also know that, for me, I HATE being uncomfortable. I despise things that pinch or itch or that pull awkwardly. It puts me in a truly foul mood and can ruin my entire day. As a solution, I find clothes that are comfortable and still look nice - like dresses, pants with a bit of stretch to them, and non-woven shirts. Shoes seem to be the lone exception, as uncomfortable shoes generally don't bother me.

I get his point, and maybe I'm just too sensitive, but I can't concentrate on anything but my clothes if they're too restrictive or have a bad texture.

After years in Seattle, where fleece, flannel and clogs still rule, I have to agree with Tim and Maya on this. I also think that "being comfortable", for women who are around middle age, is just an excuse to stop trying. And it takes more effort once you've stopped trying... (not that I know about this from personal experience).
