Keep on looking. They have trendier styles from time to time.

Check out Vince Camuto petites too. Gibson, and Halogen petites are good. Their fits can be just what you’re looking for.

Thank you, Angie. I do have one wool blazer from Talbots petites. I appreciate that they have blazers in natural fabrics but I find their designs are not exactly my style. I will keep an eye in case something pops in.

Have you tried Talbots petites? Lafayette petites too.

A blazer does not need to close, so get one to fit your shoulders and back first. And if it almost closes in front, that is just fine.

I only wear stretch blazers and only button them if I’m freezing. Eileen Fisher stretch crepe ones are my favorites.

FashIntern, When I lived in Russia all my clothes was custom made. But I couldn't find an affordable tailor in Toronto.
The responses to my post just confirmed that I suspected before - the shoulders fit is crucial. So, forget the classic style blazer altogether, it will never fit me off the rack. I should only consider boxy cuts like Chanel iconic jackets with more room in the chest area. It is a personal preference but I can't wear a blazer open only, it's like to wear a jacket with a broken zipper. I have one in size 4 petite from BR, fits in the shoulders and sleeves are the right length but too fitted for my current style. I keep it for now, don't have anything better for a formal wear.

I have no idea how to pick blazers, so am following along with interest. Thanks for starting this post!

The only "idea" I have is to have seamstresses estimate the costs of any alterations before cutting tags. Also, if you're OK with paying for a blazer on sale and alterations, would you be able to add that money together, buy fabric you like, and have one made?

Suz, as if I didn't like that blazer enough already, now you've made me like it more.

Thank you for this post. The last time I shopped for blazers, it was awful. I couldn't find anything because of my broad back, long arms, and longest torso. I personally gave up.

You have given me hope. I need to try again and focus on the shoulders. Thanks Duancedream. From there, I might be able to have it altered to fit better. I say "might" because I agree the outcome is not predictable and can be downright scary.

The idea of a knit blazer is appealing too. Thanks Suntiger.

Also, keep shopping for brands that have a better chance of working for your shape. If you are curvy up top and really want a wonderful blazer then forget Rag and Bone (which uses a straighter bodied fit model) and try somebody like Ted Baker or (I think?) Rebecca Taylor (whose styles tend to fit those with curves a bit better). Check out forum member Diana's blazers. She doesn't have a large bust but does have narrow shoulders, a short waist, and curves, and she finds lots of jackets that work for her. Also, check the forum for your near "body doubles" and see what works for them. I'm blanking right now on who might be your best match but maybe someone will chime in.

If you don't tend to wear it buttoned, don't worry about that aspect of the jacket. Shoulder fit is crucial.

Suntiger -- the more recent double breasted blazers are cleverly cut to look great unbuttoned. In fact, the 1 State I bought *can't* be buttoned. It is double breasted but nips in at the waist. -- genius!

Oh, so I’m not alone. I should probably return the R&B blazer I bought, it fits well in front but too big in the shoulders and bunches on the upper back.
Lisa, a few years ago I paid to get the shoulders altered. Result was not bad but great either. At that time I bought a blazer on sale intending to alter it. Alterations cost as much as a blazer. I would be OK with the price but the outcome is very unpredictable.

Ah I personally never, or almost never, button blazers. Single breasted ones look right unbuttoned, but double doesn't work so well.
I struggle with them too-getting the shoulders right. Often they just seem too wide.

I have the same issues . It’s closure over the chest that does me in every time . I don’t ever button a blazer though , so as long as the shoulder and back fit perfectly , I’m usually good to go . Sleeves are often too long on me - which I mitigate by cuffing or scrunching . One of these days I’ll pay to have a really good tailor fit one to my standards .

Suntiger, I remove shoulder pads wherever it’s possible my hips are narrow and extending the shoulder line make me an IT, unfortunately.

Nuancedream, this is what I think, too. I found a really nice blazer that is one size up and already at the top of my price range. I love it but getting it altered scares me.

Buy your true size and never button the blazer. One of my personal cardinal rules of fashion is to make sure the shoulders of a blazer/jacket/coat fit perfectly, even if it means going up or down in size. A great seamtress is worth her weight in gold, but even the most skilled seamstress can't significantly alter the shoulders without affecting the overall fit of the blazer. Additionally, altering the shoulders of a blazer can be prohibitively expensive.

Ok, never thought I'd say this again, but add shoulder pads? I don't mean huge 80s ones, but just enough to lift and straighten out the back. Joann Fabrics sells them if you want to experiment. Also, knits are much more forgiving!

Finding a blazer that: made of natural fabrics, fits me, cut the way I like it and affordable is close to impossible. I’m 5’3 or 160 sm and require a petite size. Some of the regular size blazers are OK, too, just would need to be without buttons on the sleeves, so they can be shorten. The main problem is the chest/shoulders area. My chest is a bit big for my frame. To accommodate it, I need to size up but then shoulders are dropping and the top part of the back has extra fabric. If I try my true size, buttoning a blazer feel and looks tight. This is due to narrow shoulders and the back. So, what to do?
- forget the whole idea of finding a blazer or
- buy bigger size and alter the shoulders/back area. I have a good seamstress but it is not an easy alterations or
- buy a true size and never ever button the blazer.
What would you do?
