How about his next purchase being suit separates and buy two jackets and one pair of slacks? And/or work on the elbows on the desk habit by promising himself that if his next jacket lasts twice as long he can take part of what he saves from not replacing his jacket early on something special for himself.

This time of year, you can probably find one on clearance for $100. Sequins are probably not the look he wants for the office, but there are a lot of other choices here. https://www.macys.com/shop/men.....Sport%20Co

I know nothing about men's suits, but if you limit the discount range to 70% & up, you get some that I think look pretty decent.

FashIntern, I was wondering about that too. Going to do some googling.

Angie, the suit was Macy’s off the rack. I think $100+ is too much for the quality of the jacket.

I’ve suggested he ask around on both Suit sales, and options to remove the jacket while in office as Jane mentioned. Maybe he’ll start a trend?

How much was the suit? Is it worth reweaving the hole?

On the next blazer, I wonder if preventative patching, like on the inside of kids' jeans, would help. Idk if you'd want to use iron-on patches like moms do for little ones. Maybe, or maybe there's some other kind of patches that could be put right there, but on the inside, before the fabric starts wearing through.

My guy must have the sharpest elbows out there because he gets holes in all his sleeves. No advice on how to avoid it, sadly! Does he lean on his elbow on the desk a lot?

Thanks all for the validation - I had an immediate anxiety attack when he suggested patching!

Unfortunately the hole is large enough that I don’t think it can be sewn. It’s almost the size of a dime.

CardiffGirl - I’m with you. I suspect the best option would be to go for a super obnoxious patch and demote the jacket to casual wear.

Jane- thanks for your suggestions, I agree it’s crazy to think jackets on at all times. I suggested he tell his office that he “runs hot” and take it off when in his cube.

Doesn’t seem worth the price of reweaving the sleeve unless the suit was very precious to start with.l tend to agree that dress suits can look a bit odd with patched sleeves it’s more a blazer look but if it’s all he can afford might be better to make it look like a deliberate fashion statement rather than a not quite invisible patch look.

No patches!

Are the holes small or large? If they are small, they can be sewn shut quite discreetly.

Wow! Jacket on at all times sounds quite hardcore.

If it helps, the chaps I work with, take off their jacket when at their desks, and then when they do anything other than go to the bathroom or to make a cuppa, put on their jackets. I haven't seen them having issues with elbows. But they don't sit and work in their jackets. Their suits come from Reiss and Hackett, so kind of mid range price I guess. Invisible mends by tailors are very good, but I'm wondering if it is worth it. DH (he liked especially Ted Baker) buys two pairs of trousers with every jacket when he is buying smart suits. DS has had good wear quality out of Top Man suits.

I feel the patch could be a solution for a blazer made from tweed or checked wool, but if it’s a navy serge blazer, might look a bit odd. And in my mind, a suit jacket is really different than a blazer as it is exact fabric as its partner slacks, hence a suit. On a true dress suit, I would not patch.

So maybe you could show photos of the jackets in question?

I think prevention might have to do with quality of fabric.

DS has a suit problem, and I’m hoping the collective here can help.

Office requirement is suit jackets on at all times. And he has now worn a hole in the elbow of one blazer and is close on another.

In speaking with a tailor in DC, they gave him the option of reweaving the hole for $140, or patching for about $20. The patch appeals as he is on a new grad budget, but the concern is that could look end up looking more like an English professor’s blazer than something you would wear in govt.

Any suggestions on how to fix, or would he be better off replacing the blazer or the full suit? Ideas on how to prevent this on his next jacket?
