I think it's a bit fussy - ruffles are meant to be out there being ruffle-y, KWIM? I agree that a shawl is better.

Personally I would not wear the blazer with that dress. If you had a solid black dress with clean lines then I would say go for it! If you feel like you need to cover up your shoulders I would say go with a black shawl.

Tacky, no. But on me at least, it never looks right. To my eye, blazers look best with trousers or jeans, and can work with skirts, too, if the proportions are right. With dresses, I always think a cardigan looks better, or, depending on the type of dress, no topper at all. Just a coat with a similar hem length to the dress.
That is a very pretty dress!

I don't think it is tacky to wear a blazer over a ruffled dress. But it can at times look awkward. Without seeing the two together it is difficult to say. But because they will obviously be low contrast, it won't be as much of a problem as it could be.

Do you have any other options in case you begin to agree with your boyfriend?

Help! I am volunteering at an important evening event tomorrow and my boyfriend just told me my blazer doesn't look right with my dress. I can't upload a picture, but here is the dress http://cdnb.lystit.com/photos/.....uct-2-3477

He said the ruffles clash with the blazer and the dress should not be worn with a blazer. I should also note my blazer is a tad small so I keep it unbuttoned. The black material of the dress and the blazer match, but obviously are not perfect matches because they are separates.

Do you all think it looks tacky to wear a blazer over a dress that has ruffles on it? The top ruffles only peek out somewhat.
