Ginger is exactly right when she wrote, "the higher-under-the-armpit armhole actually gives far more range of motion." Proper shoulder fit is my bête noire, and like you NM, I have broad shoulders and a small chest. I was moaning about jacket fits to my seamstress, and she had me bring in a few. I had been buying them too large to get what I thought was greater range of motion, since my correct size felt too small across the shoulders for me. Using a jacket I had just bought that I thought was too small, Fatima adjusted the armholes higher by hand, and magically, I had complete range of motion. Mind. blown. I so love my seamstress!!

MaryBeth I LOL’d at the hulk! Yes! I feel like that’s how this looks ! It doesn’t feel tight, but to my eye it sure looks tight.

I think that the first picture is okay - in that, yes, it looks a little narrow when I peer at it carefully, but if this jacket is in regular rotation, and you love it, I don't know that people will actually notice.

Funny that this has come up, because I listed several blazers last month, after a try-on. Mine were approaching the point where I looked like that moment just before "HULK ANGRY"..... riiiiiiiiiip.

The important thing is that our bodies change, and I don't think that's a bad thing, because every day that we wake up is a blessing. Bodies aren't wonky.... it's life that's wonky.

Ginger, you're sooo right. I'm in the habit of sometimes thrifting too large blouses/shirts and I can't size them down accurately because the armscye reaches too deep into the front side chest. So if it were moved back I would have a football shaped hole. :D

Yes, if that's the issue, it's not really possible to add fabric in. So I wouldn't worry about it if you don't feel it and it doesn't bother you. And FWIW I think it's something very few people would notice, including me. It's just not something that bothers me. Set-in sleeves are hard to pattern - like really, really hard - even for the most experienced of professionals. Trying to make three pieces of fabric replicate the entire movement capability of the human shoulder and arm, and look smooth and creaseless at the same time.

Ginger - thank you!!! So if the sleeve head is too narrow, it seems like there os no real way to make it wider… it’s just going to look tight/small there, right?

Commenting again The issues that show up when the arms are raised is exacerbated by very large armholes. It's counterintuitive, but a higher-under-the-armpit armhole actually gives far more range of motion. With a giant deep hole, the arm ends up stuck to the body. That's why the lapels are gapping widely in that photograph- in order to raise their arms, the entire jacket pulls upward. I've seen it a lot with conductors and choir directors.

Vildy- that’s interesting! I once had a jacket that was too big — below the divot it was HUGE in the upper arm.

I had the shoulder pad reduced and narrowed the sleeve, so it was a straighter arm instead of tapered toward the wrist (cuff?). It laid beautifully after that… he must’ve changed the arm hole, too …

This black jacket is tighter in the upper arm to start. I wonder if that changes the approach?

Garment construction is so fascinating!!

Thanks, everyone! I always thought shoulder divots were on the top! Glad this is a “thing” and I am not crazy. :D

I *think* the jackets fit ok otherwise… and some of them would not be worth it (to me) to have tailored. I’ll do a deeper assessment with the others.

Helena-yep, I am an IT with a broad shoulder and small chest.
Janet - holding zone might work… I should make sure I can make outfits, too, before I give up. I tried them on with a long sleeve tee, but a full outfit would give me a better idea…

Thank you all again!!

To get further into the weeds :D sometimes it can be too thick padding, which can be fixed by reducing and then reducing the height of the shoulder and can also be that the sleeve is set into the armscye at the wrong angle, especially to accommodate arm movement, and can be fixed by removing sleeve, repositioning/turning and reinserting but may need some recutting to accomplish this.

IMHO it is also caused by a too-narrow sleeve head. It's not necessarily the shoulder width or the size of the arm; if the head of the sleeve is too narrow, it will pull like this across the upper arm. I'm not an expert tailor, so I don't know how challenging it is to prevent. I've seen it on high-end bespoke garments (several worn by the Duchess of Cornwall!) so I suspect this is a common issue and not unique to RTW. As Janet says, I certainly would not give this up unless it is actually constricting your movements.

I think this is a really common fit issue, especially for those who have well developed arm muscles. I wouldn’t consider it a deal breaker if these are already in your wardrobe and the fit is otherwise good. I would probably just wear them over only the lightest of layers to reduce the issue as much as possible — no bulky sweaters underneath. How sure are you that these body changes are permanent? I keep clothes that are within a certain fit threshold when I’m not sure if body changes will endure.

Shoulder divots! I need to consider this. Overall the fit of the first one looks like a good tailored fit and the second a good oversized fit (I do think the shoulders are a tad wide for a tailored fit on that one), but I am very eager to see what Angie and others think.

The guys call this "shoulder divots". Means the shoulder width is too narrow. Don't see this as fixable.

I thought that “dip” was normal! I think most of my jackets do this. The second one without it—looks too big in comparison. I hope someone can clear this up because maybe my
Jackets are really too small too! Eek!

I doubt I would have noticed it without the circles, but to me you look like you've been working out, and that's a good thing. The second one, without really seeing the rest of the the jacket, looks perfect to me. But then, it looks like it's velvet or similar that needs a bit more shoulder seam because of the fabric.

On the first jacket--could a different shoulder pad work better? I kind of doubt it. Except for the shoulder seam, the rest of the jacket looks like it fits well and is a pretty jacket.
