Ahh I see - yes I'll admit I never bought very frequently from Karen Millen, even when I was in the UK it was mostly just thrifted items. I took a bit of a gamble in ordering trousers online this time then trying it on when I finally flew home - thankfully it paid off! But if it fits me then you're likely right that it would be too short-waisted on you. If it's any consolation, I had to return their tops because they were unbelievably tight on me, despite my top half not usually being the problem (pear shaped), haha! Unpredictable.

I've never bought from Jigsaw either but I'd say your best bet is probably Etsy (or a similarly international reselling site) at this point - I've seen some nice pure new wool outerwear from British brands there but, like you, am hesitant to pull the trigger on those (sometimes outrageous) shipping fees!

Thanks Fash. The necklace is made from a 19th century antique button. I love that kind of upcycling.

I’d try a top that harmonises (in terms of colour) with the skirt that you plan to wear with it.

Your amazing looks come together from your amazing pieces and amazing creativity in putting them together. That necklace is a great detail that adds so much to the overall look. More, combined well like you do it, is more!

I’m glad you posted this now. I’ve been thinking of my own mesh top, wondering what I might like to try under it, and if it would go best with my dark ditzy floral skirt or something else, maybe the purple eyelet lace.

Thanks Zaeobi. I can buy Karen Millen online from the UK but, when it was here in Australia, I found the sizing unpredictable. Their knits and skirts seemed to run quite small. Maybe 2 sizes or so. I could never even fit into their jeans (sadly not that unusual for me). I can’t remember trying any jackets but I suspect they might be too small/short waisted for me. Usually UK sizing is generous, so I found them a bit of an outlier. I am very attracted to some of their coats and jackets but have not yet risked the delivery fee (which I think is around $30) by ordering from them.

Jigsaw used to do some lovely wool jackets and pure wool jackets are increasingly hard to find. I’d take a risk on them - their sizing was more predictable. But last time I checked they don’t deliver to Australia.

@Brooklyn Thank you - rust or aubergine could potentially work! (I've officially moved ALL my black clothes to my UK closet)

Ah Karen Millen - if it helps, I consider that style of clothing to be on par with Oasis, BHS, Warehouse, Dorothy Perkins, Wallis, Burton. Those were all UK brands that were a part of the Arcadia Group, which is sadly no more (meaning the AG no longer exists in the UK either - the pandemic affected a lot of the British high street, even on home turf).

I say if it 'helps' because you could likely find such brands online now (I remember seeing many of their clothes on eBay, since it was always a relatively accessible price point). I just bought some Karen Millen trousers & found that my usual UK14 size fits fine in the hips (40") but the waist is loose (30"), which is sadly also normal for me

Zaeobi, that dress is gorgeous! I have a floral mesh top and I find that it’s better to wear a darker or saturated colour underneath it. I wear mine with black, red, rust or aubergine. Lighter colours just dull the pattern. You might be able to find a maxi length tank dress in black to wear under the dress.

@Brookyln I believe this is it:

I have no idea who Elin Warnqvist is (must be getting old lol) but this seems to be the full collection:
https://www.na-kd.com/en/brands/elinwarnqvistxnakd

Hmm will have to see if I can find a red or orange skirt that's tight enough to wear underneath the dress (since it's quite slinky already), but a good shout - thanks!

I have been buying layering skirts to get tgst inch or 2 of extra length I need, but haven’t found the right candidates.

Thanks ST and Jaime.

Zaeobi, sunset ombre dress?? Where do I sign??? I would try a warm underpinning that amps up the sunset. Maybe in red or orange.

SarahD8, you are reading my mind I have tried it with some of my patterned skirts, but they are too dark. It works best with a light or high contrast underpinning. I have a plaid skirt that might work. I love the idea of pattern mixing.

Angie, I wish I had seen that jumper sooner. I think I would have bought 2. (It sold out quickly.) I love the pattern and the cropped length is perfect. I would have dyed the second one teal …

Sal, I really like that too. Refresh and revive.

Suz, the skirt is a silky satin. It’s a medium weight poly. Poly is not my favourite, but most of my skirts have a poly lining so I can tolerate it. (Plus it’s winter!) The lace skirt has lots of stretch and is very accommodating. ASOS is very trial and error. I have returned many things to them.

Thanks all!

Merwoman, I used RIT tan. I’ve used it before and it usually comes out a light pinkish tan. I was actually trying to match the skirt below. I’ve already dyed a plain cotton top in tan and it matches it perfectly. But for some reason the colour of the jumper came out deeper. More like a copper or camel. The jumper is very sheer (a wool/cotton mix), so possibly that made it soak up the dye. Plus I used vinegar instead of salt (as recommended for wool). That might have made a difference too. Hit and miss of DIY!

Ooh this is wonderfully paired! The tan & black looks luxe but also accessible.

I actually bought a sheer sunset ombre maxi dress (from ASOS) & was contemplating which colour to layer underneath it - I think tan might dull the colour but that's probably a good thing (so that it does not compete)? Hmm, lots to think about when it comes to colours merging in different pairings!

You are so clever with your layering to get the effects you want. Just brilliant! Also, you are the most diligent and best ASOS shopper ever. I confess I still have trouble with the site -- I don't know how to distinguish decent from terrible quality and don't know how the sizing works in most cases so I am frightened off.

Is the tan skirt a silky fabric or a more structured one? This is such a great idea.
