Thanks Nicole! I wasn't having doubts about the quality, but I can't tell if it's more of a spring lightweight coat.

Marianne, Elie Tahari makes beautiful, well made pieces. He is my all time favorite designer and I would buy anything from him, just about sight unseen. If you love that trench, don't worry about it's construction.

Thank you for ideas, ladies! The Anthropologie one looks pretty lightweight and I would ideally want a longer one... I don't really have an exact picture in my mind, but I kind of like classic trenches, gunflaps and all. Some of the black trenches I liked were Kenneth Cole Reaction, but I am not sure if I was mostly drawn to them because they tend to be more water-resistant. And their stuff seems to be 90% black.

Shiny, I did look on Bluefly when you posted it and I love an idea of a white trench, but I think Angie's right about contrasting buttons (like her trench and your new jacket). Of course I'd be worried about getting it dirty too. This one seems interesting, but I never ordered from Bluefly and it's hard for me to tell what the sturdiness factor is like from the picture:
http://www.bluefly.com/Elie-Ta.....detail.fly

Maya, I know what you mean about the lighting. At the store, white is the only color I don't have a problem with. I might try bringing a black trench home and experimenting with it.

Marianne - what about this one? I too am looking for a non-black trench and thought this looked good. It doesn't say if it's water resistant so maybe it's not. It's cotton so maybe not. dang....

I've owned my black BR trench for years. It is unlined, and water resistant not repellant, but it is a great trench because it is very lightweight so I can easily take it on all my travels - takes up very little space. It even fit easily in my tote in Paris - so I had it with me on those days when it would suddenly start to rain.

But, I bought it long before YLF and when I began finally wearing jeans. So it worked well over khakis or black & white tweed trousers or grey trousers. I would be sure to wear a top that had a bright pop of color for interest.

I don't know if a non-black trench is in my future. Let's just say, it's not very high on my shopping list right now: it seems in Boston we have extreme weather now - it's either too cold for a trench, or too hot.

Also, most trench coats look horrible on me! I don't like ties on my coats, for one thing. But the bigger issue is that most classic trenches seem to have too much goo-gah going on on the shoulders, and then there's often that weird back vent. I think I end up looking like a linebacker and a hunchback. :-(

Did you check bluefly.com? I recently posted a link there - they had a wide array of cream trench coats.

Oh - and I guess I'm still kicking myself because Ann Taylor last spring was selling the most GORGEOUS red trench.... I tried it on and it fit and flattered... it was the perfect shade of red for me (with blue undertones)... but I hesitated and it quickly sold out.

I'm often surprised by store lighting. I often find little flaws I never knew I had because they're just not visible under normal circumstances. One would think that they would do everything they can to ENHANCE how you look, not detract from it. Maybe it's geared towards a specific range of skin tones that I fall outside of. Who knows. Maybe that's why I prefer shopping online.

Anyway, back on topic: A pop of color by your face usually does the trick, so a scarf in a cheery flattering color might help brighten you up. I still think it would be great if you find a colorful trench though. They're so much fun on a rainy day.

Thanks for the photos Tanya! I think hair adds a lot.
Water-repellant would be fine, as long as it doesn't soak in the rain, like pure cotton ones. It doesn't need to be waterproof Gore-tex like. It might be still a bit early but I am getting discouraged. I saw a few grey ones that were kind of satin-y and really lightweight.

Maya, I like the look but when I try it on somehow it doesn't look right - it might be my skin tone or it could be the store lighting... looks like I am in mourning

I have dark hair and usually wear dark jeans and dark boots with my black trench. I have never really been bothered by it. I think it's a pretty standard urban uniform. I see it all the time.

I often wear a light pink scarf with it, though. It's very thin silk and seems to do the trick as a bridging piece. The sheen and texture is also very pretty and makes it a little more dressy/special. Bright shoes and a bright bag are other options. And hey, don't underestimate your face. Nothing like a big bright smile to liven up an outfit! Not that I recommend you run around town grinning like a moron, but I just think sometimes women overlook their built-in accessories.

I really like colorful trenches though. I wasn't looking specifically for a black trench when I got mine. I just ended up taking it because it's waterproof and the fit was spectacular.

Hi Marianne, does it have to be water-resistant or it's enough to be water-repelant?
Another color to try would be grey with some type of sheen, it seems to be popular this season.

I have a black trench and try to wear it a bright turtleneck/scarf/bag ( but I have dark blond hair). Here are some of my photos wearing it:

I have been looking for a water-resistant trench coat but I haven't been able to find anything so far. It seems that the only ones I come across that look decent are black, and I am trying to avoid black at this point. It seems like black trench with dark wash jeans with my black hair would be very dark. I was wondering (after reading Angie's comments in another thread) - those of you who have black coats or trenches, how do you break it up so it doesn't look too dark? Scarves? Any other suggestions?
Thanks in advance for ideas!
