That's good to know, Lisa. I have two pairs of the Grand Court style -- one of which I've had for many years and is about ready for retirement -- and they work really well for me. I'm getting really picky about comfort and shoes -- especially sneakers! -- these days.

Comfort must always come first. I've found Adidas can be comfortable, but you have to get the "right" style. I kept trying to make Gazelles and Samba's work, until I realized the Breaknet Sleek style was best for my feet (put mine in the finds below). I've found each style of Adidas has a different toe box shape, amount of padding for the insoles, and length of the tongue, which on me can rub against my leg/shin (I'm looking at you Gazelles). Good luck with your sneaker shopping!

Update: After much hemming and hawing, and looking at the box in my closet, I am returning the Linea Paolo denim sneakers. They are cute, but I fear the comfort will be an issue long-term. I guess my feet have changed just enough to make some formerly-comfortable choices less than ideal. My feet are still a little narrow and low-volume, but some shoes are pinching a little on my left foot (the foot that is a bit more problematic, as it’s slightly larger than the right, and has never been quite the same after I dropped a dresser drawer on it at least 15 years ago). This is one of those shoes. Or at least I can tell it’s going to feel that way after a couple of hours of wear, you know?

They are not heavy, and I think they can work IF you have narrow to narrowish feet. I would not recommend them for wide feet at all. Probably best if there is room for a cushioning insole.

But I’m thinking of simply going for a black colorway in one of these Adidas styles, since I’ve found Adidas to have a very comfortable fit straight out of the box. I’ve even thought about the platform Converse but I don’t necessarily want the white toe on this particular shoe.

I might have to look into those for my upcoming Portugal trip. It seems like all sneakers are platform style these days. I'm wondering about heaviness and comfort.

Hi all! Back to this after a long delay…honestly, I have not committed to these yet. I have a little concern about long-term comfort. I’m also thinking that with my new black pants (a frequent pairing with such shoes), I may simply go with my ususal comfortable style of "fashion" sneakers — something reliable and classic like an Adidas style. Not sure yet!

I'd say it's no accident that many of our unicorns are shoes. Shoe-nicorns. I had a pair of white Born sneakers that were perforated, so cool in the summer, had a side zip AND laces so they were easy to get on and off, and had a rounded toe box that worked perfectly for my slightly duck shaped feet. I thought I had found a replacement in the Riekers that I bought last year, but they squeeze my pinky toe just a little bit. Enough to not be comfortable for miles.

I had a similar situation with a pair of platform fisherman sandals that I wore to the ground (this was years before they were trending and lots of options became available). I hope the new pair work out (and of course I second Suz's suggestion to check ebay etc. for the original).

I have a weakness for black and white in footwear. This year it is white with a bit of black. Today I am wearing white sneakers with black elastic laces.and a bit of planther print down the back. Bags also need to be mostly white with a bit of black.

I have those same “ originals “ and still happily wear them to work probably once a week in cooler weather . I love the height they give me and are among the most comfy shoes I’ve owned . I get the same heel slippage you mentioned but it’s not bad. You’re right in that there hasn’t been much like this the last year or two and I know I’ll miss mine when they bite the dust . Hope the denim version works for you .

Hope they work - they look promising.

My black platform sneakers with a white sole have been so well worn - they are looking a bit tired now.

A unicorn workhorse is a funny image.....especially when a wildcard too.

I usually tweak my workhorses as I replace them but sometimes would like to exactly duplicate - tweak below with the white sneakers.

I love those sneakers. I wonder if you could track down an unworn pair on Poshmark or similar if the denim version doesn't work out?

It is hard to replace a unicorn. Especially the wildcard workhorse type. (Now there's an image -- a wildcard workhorse unicorn!) I usually find that I have to choose a different type of item that fills the same purpose, and that typically takes longer than I'd like. My current unicorn is the right weight merino hoodie. I don't think I'm going to find it this year and I will probably have to substitute with something different.

They look perfect for you! My unicorn is black sneakers with gumsoles, that are lightweight fabric and work for both Zumba and travel. Tried the Sambas but the tongues were ridiculously long so uncomfortable at the ankle.

You'd think I have enough sneakers, right? Well, Angie and Suz both saw my well-worn but beloved Linea Paolo black platform sneakers are starting to feel less than great. They still *look* pretty good, but I think the inside is starting to break down a bit. In fairness, I did walk 10 miles in them the first day I arrived in Vancouver -- I had not planned on it but it just sort of worked out that way, and boy were my dogs tired at the end of the day! I'm going to try putting a thin insole in them, and stick with not such extreme wear, but in the meantime I started to look at a possible replacement. Most of the black sneakers out there are either truly sporty looking or a little too flat and insubstantial looking. I really like the presence of the thick white platform on these shoes, and the snip toe is such a great refined detail.

Well, lo and behold, I took a break from a project today and poked around, and it appears Nordstrom has a very similar sneaker by Linea Paolo but in black *denim*. I'm not sure how that will work, comfort-wise, but I've ordered them to try. See the Find below.

For some reason I can't find my old pair in my Finds, and I could swear I had them. I almost gave them away at one point because the heels slipped so badly, but then I found that Ondo invisible socks actually made them wearable! They've been a workhorse ever since. You can see them in the pic here.

Wish me luck! Have you ever successfully replaced a basic like that with very specific requirements? I feel like I'm looking for a unicorn, LOL!
