I have a knit black maxi. It's not leather, but here's what I wear with it:

- Graphic or word t-shirt and flats. Makes it more casual.

- Tank top with an unbuttoned button-up over top (does that make sense?) and flats.

- A dressier top with a brown or denim fitted jacket and boots.

Here are some ideas I found on pinterest:

Here are some additional ideas: Wear the leather skirt with:
- a checked shirt, i.e. red & black, blue & black or green & black, and matching red, blue, green or black sneakers. (If black sneakers, choose some with white soles and other white details to brighten the look. And consider wearing white pearls as a fun and unexpected contrast.) Or substitute the sneakers for wine, blue or green combat boots or suede ballet flats
- a white, offwhite or black lace blouse and non-black velvet shoes/boots
- an offwhite cable knit sweater, a large but simple casual pendant necklace, and wine boots
- a black cardigan, a camisole in a different colour, and patterned shoes/boots (i.e. leopard print, florals or checks)
- a classic button-front shirt, perhaps in a pastel colour and/or patterned (i. e. stripes or dots), hoop earrings, a great textured belt, and oxfords (flat or heeled). Consider adding a knitted vest (waistcoat) and/or a printed scarf

I likevthe ideas suggested. Keep the top simple and classic, some style that’s in you comfort zone helps keep the outfit feeling like “ you” , and simple keeps the skirt from feeling like too much. Also a different texture, a knit, makes good relief from the smooth leather.

Try it with black in different textures. I have a black maxi skirt that I bought thinking it would be a good idea and have never worn it, so am really no help. I even bought a black quilted shortish jacket to wear with it, but it also has never been worn. Both could be dressed up or down. Hmmm, there is a lesson here.

I like what The Cat suggested. I don't think you're in any danger of looking like you're trying to hard with this skirt--it's such a simple style and looks like it be worn in lots of different ways. I know how you feel--sometimes trying anything different makes me feel uncomfortable at first but I try to push past it.

Super cool. Definitely not ridiculous. Your skirt looks gorgeous. And I imagine that it can be styled in a multitude of ways, from casual to rock chic to very elegant.

One suggestion: Wear it with a fitted and tucked in high neck pullover and booties.

I bought a lovely black faux leather maxi skirt because I thought it would be a goes-with-a-million-things basic bottom to substitute for jeans... but it turns out that I am not cool enough to wear it.

Or at least I'm not cool enough to feel cool wearing it. I feel like I look like I'm trying too hard. Maybe that's because as a vertically challenged person I was always told I shouldn't wear long skirts.

But the rules seem to have changed to more of a wear-what-you-love kind of approach. Should I give it a try? Is a black maxi skirt a basic?

And what shoes or boots should I wear?

Thanks so much for any advice! I love the honesty and support here!

It looks like this:
