I am VERY sparing with the solid black in my wardrobe - and do not want more. I don't wear black shoes.

I have these five solid black items, and that's it. I haven't worn the T-neck in 5 years. I don't wear the puffer either. I've been weaning myself off black for years. I much prefer dark blue.

I DO wear black in a pattern, a trim, a tuxedo stripe, or black lace.

Phoebe, are you sure you don’t wear it? I don’t think of myself as someone who wears it at all, but I quickly came up with a dozen pieces in my wardrobe, and a couple of ways I wear it. Similar to what you said, I use it to highlight other things.

I generally avoid wearing it but between your post and Sal's about creating outfits without, I am rethinking my aversion because I don't think of either of you as wearing it!

I'm thinking that rather than the heavy blankness I associate with black, it must just add a sort of delineation to your outfits, a quality that might improve my own outfits.

Maybe in small doses?

Ooh, I love your black and can see why you have kept these pieces.
I have always loved the chic sophistication of black. I have said that when I pass, I want people to wear their sassiest shoes, blingyest jewelry and black (not because they are mourning, but because it is a color I love).
I still wear black, but not as often since I have gone gray. These days, I look better in charcoal or navy, but I think I will always have some black in my closet.

I own (and buy!) way more black than I would prefer but try to avoid flat black tops. I just went through my Finds and found a couple flat black tops I don’t wear. If I buy solid black, it is generally shiny, textured, or both.

As I age and my gray hair increases, black is not as flattering. Charcoal is much better but of course harder to find.

I really like your intentional and well-thought-out black capsule Carla!

Despite breaking up with a black for a stretch (I was really into colour analysis and worried about flattery, and also was probably too dependent on it as a substitute for being a bit intentional with clothing), I LOVE black. I love that it's simple, versatile, timeless, and trend-resistant. I wear it a lot in the fall and winter (I switch it out for more navy in the warmer months), in the form of a puffer coat, boots, shoes, belts, tops, leggings, sneakers, and one pair of dress pants. I don't often do head to toe black because I wear jeans so much, but happily would - with perhaps a printed belt or scarf to break it up. I don't buy black exclusively, but I rarely regret purchasing an item because it is black ... although I do sometimes regret NOT getting the black! I do well with contrast, so I've got a few scarves and necklaces that include white, or a black and white print, to add some. I happily mix black and navy, so I can use these as my two dark neutrals without much trouble.

I also choose to believe that black is flattering on me, despite disagreement from the colour analyst! At least nothing that a bit of makeup doesn't help considerably!

Carla, you look fabulous in the 3 outfits you posted above. I like the way you mix it in with your colors. And oh, Sal, you said it. Mouthwatering black pieces here.

Although I'm buying a lot more color these days, I like to wear black. At the start of this year I counted up so many black tops I was embarrassed. I don't want to dig into my cool weather sweater drawer now, but I know there are a lot. I don't like to wear black pants, however, I have 1 pair. Let's see, 1 black jacket, 1 cashmere cardigan, 1 black casual dress, and 1 pair of black dressy shoes--my only black footwear.

I do have 2 solid black skirts and 2 mostly black print skirts, so if I want to wear what looks like a black dress, I add a black top to a skirt. Oh, I do have a black leather jacket.

I don't like black bags for me or black shoes either for the most part.

I would feel sad if I had to banish black completely from my closet.

There are some gorgeous black pieces in this thread!!!

Fashintern - I expressed myself clumsily. I meant black and white monochrome patterns - not solid black. I used to wear a lot of monochrome pattern but it doesn’t seem to suit me any more but I think on summers or cooler skins thus can look better then solid black.

Other than gear and two LBDs, I had sworn off black until the last year or so when I added a supporting act of black pieces.

Black is NOT flattering with my coloring but I LOVE how black grounds and toughens my earthtones. It feels more appropriate than navy, which can read more 'outdoorsy' and less 'adventurous', which is the vibe I am after.

Looking back on what I've bought, tossed, and worn, it's clear that I have changed the way I look at wardrobe colors. I no longer look at colors in an isolated way - but, more like how they work with the other colors in my closet. When shopping, black may not be my first color of choice, but I may need to consider it if I am trying to create a particular column, colorblock, bookend, mood, etc.

It's fascinating how some people really love black and have to stop from buying too much of it!

Black isn't a bad color for me, but it doesn't make me happy and I don't choose to wear it for itself. It's represented in my cool-weather wardrobe because I need it as a completer. I don't remember the last time I wore black in warm weather, even just in shoes.

I have 3 pair of black boots, 3 pair solid black flats, and 3 pair black heels, plus a couple more that are two-tone (flats with brown ankle straps and spectator-style heels with gray wool). It's really too big a herd in flats and heels, but they're all very different and it helps me to not feel so stuck when black is the only thing that works with the outfit.

I have multiple pair of black tights and black leggings, and one black coat, which I often forget I have. Then two black dresses I use for choir performance, one black skirt, one black sweater, and one black dress with dramatic sleeve ruffles and silver embroidery. That's it!

Your collection of black items is fab, and I am sure they look gorgeous teamed with colours that might be even better with your warm colouring. :-)

Black is in my palette, and I like to wear black--teamed with other colours. I don't wear all-black ensembles, as that would be too sombre and boring for me. Though I have fewer black items at present than years ago, I still have quite many, in particular in my winter wardrobe, and this feels natural to me. Black always makes me feel grounded, often elegant and, particularly in winter, even toasted. I love black items that are as yummy as liquorice. :-)

In January, I purchased two black crew-neck midi dresses--one longsleeved, one shortsleeved. Both are softly textured, very comfortable, look relaxed elegant, are easy to pack and can be styled in countless ways. (All these elements are ideals in my book.) The longsleeved dress immediately became a favourite last winter, so did the shortsleeved dress in spring, and I look forward to wear both of them this fall.

Among my other solid black favourites are: midi taffeta skirt; knee-length leather skirt; two light-weight A-line knee-length summer skirts; straight-legs trouser jeans; cotton crops; long shorts; softly textured crewneck soft pullover; quality 9 years old tee (which is still deep black!),; quilted ballet flats; tall suede wedge boots; leather loafers; shimmering casual-glamorous Birk style sandals; blazer; neat (!) midi puffer coat (which always wins me compliments); long Merino cardigan; fur-trimmed suede gloves.

Items that I DON'T want to wear in solid black include: turtleneck pullovers; high-collared dresses, blouses, jackets and coats; scarfs and shawls; hats and umbrellas. Near my face and my silver hair, I want lighter or brighter cool colours.

In case you are wondering: Black is not my main neutral. Grey (from silver to charcoal) is, for all seasons. White is a favourite, too, particularly in summer. For the last three years, I have been adding items in deep blue, and I will continue to do so. This fall, I would also like to add wine.

Jenn, your collection is wonderful. JAileen, deep black is hard to wear. On my “ do not buy” list are black velvet items. I found that I could wear sheer or faded black better. If I get velvet bottoms I will want to wear it on top too. A print or black chiffon or lace would probably work. I have a duster length sheer black topper with a print on it and metallic gold that looks great for an event over a LBD or black silk column. The best part is that I can control the warmth of what I wear under neath.

No black pants except the leggings. Good for you. I noticed that almost every woman at the symphony a few years ago was wearing some sort of black pants and black footwear in winter. Tops were more interesting. A friend who was going to the symphony asked me what to wear. Immediately thought of black pants to fit right in.
I used to wear more black, especially footwear. No more black was my shopping rule. I have some essentials (outfit glue) In black but even my black puffer coat is gone. It is still a favorite shade for deep winter and late summer and travel to large cities where everyone wears black. It also became, by default, the basis of my beach capsule although I want to add more color. Black is not good for sunny tropical places. Something about the light. I can see why seaside cottages painted pink or yellow look fab but it does not translate well in a Midwest suburb..

I don’t like to wear black near my face. It makes me look like a ghost. Yet I have some black - a top, skirted leggings, pants, a sweater and lots of bags (thrifted). I specifically bought black pants for my handbell group. We wear any combo of black, white and red. I have a capsule of holiday party wear that is mostly black. I should get rid of this. I wore it mostly for my husband’s work parties. He retired last year, and my family doesn’t dress up for holidays, so there’s no need for it anymore.

I LOVE black, and it comprises somewhere between 1/3 and 1/2 my wardrobe. I wear it year-round, but more in the summer than winter, because I really like it with skin showing. In the winter, I'm much more likely to pair it with blue denim or wear it in a print than I am to dress in black head-to-toe. I don't quite have everything in Finds, but here's most of it.

I way just pondering the role of black in my wardrobe recently. I like how you wear your black more as an accent, these are all great outfits. I came to conclusion that I love black only if it has a pattern, shine or texture, but flat black doesn’t have a place in my wardrobe anymore and I will phase it out.

I definitely don't think of you as being a big black wearer, but great pieces!
I wear black year round, though like it more in summer- since it seems to read more as dark brown with bare arms and legs. The only place it's not represented in my wardrobe is sneakers, but I nearly always have a black and a colored version of all types of clothes.
Bras/underwear- I only wear black or brown. Black is probably about 70%.
Socks/tights-about half black, 30% brown, the rest colors.
Sleep/loungewear- 100% black!
Gear, coats-about 40% black probably.
Workwear, shoes-about 30% black.
A few favorites:
Pc dress-unfortunately damaged by
=^-^= but may be able to shorten and salvage.
Clarks tall boots- winter workhorses.
Ralph Lauren dress- my go to formal work dress.
Style & Co lace blazer- the only blazer I own.
Calvin Klein blouse- winter/ transitional workhorse.
PC tube skirt- year round (except bitter cold) workhorse.
Athleta leggings- well made and handy pockets.
Many more too, but it's time to clock in for work!

Sal, wait, what? Black doesn’t suit my coloring at all. I’m a “summer”. I have found that charcoal can work for me, but I almost never dress entirely in that color. Black pieces set off brighter colors, I wear black as a “backdrop” to colorful pieces in winter, and I wear black and white patterns with solid bright colored monochromatic pieces. But just black is not me! (I think Suz prefers blue over black)

I also have lots of black pieces and I am trying to replace them with either navy or charcoal, it will take me a couple of years to replace them all and I am not planning to purchase new items in black.
Longterm, I would like to keep a small capsule wardrobe in black: formal dress and trousers, blazer, coat, eveningswear, pumps, small bag and handbag.

Honestly, for me, I dont do well with neutrals in general, including black. I have two pair of black pants (culottes and joggers) and two pair of black jeans and that's it for clothes. Most of my neutrals are denim or white. I just prefer color! I do own 5 pairs of black shoes - one pair of Birks, three pair of booties, and two tall boots.

I used to stress about what "my neutral" was, but now I like to wear all sorts of colors together. "My neutral" is more like a cognac color, I think, or blush pink, and I tend to think of traditional neutrals as colors!

I have a lot of black in my wardrobe. Since early October I’ve been wearing my black bottoms but not my black tops. I am keeping all of my black items as I think this is a phase.
I bought navy items when I couldn’t find black, especially for late spring/summer/early fall. But I feel like me in black.

I reduced my black collection a few years ago but started buying black last year for new job interview/conservative dress code.

Black pants - 2 pairs from 9-10 years ago ( classic slim trouser - GAP and slightly flared one - BR ).
Black "opera" coat with 3/4 sleeves from BR ( in a hold zone ).
Black cashmere gloves ( hold zone ).
Black blazers - boyfriend and knit one ( for interview/work ).
Black sneakers with white soles - 2 pairs from ECCO.
I still wear black pants and knit blazer but infrequently. Dress code got relaxed and I'm back to white, navy, blue and patterned pieces.

You have very nice black pieces @Runcarla - especially special occasion collection ( great dresses! ). The way you incorporate black pants or jacket into more colorful outfits is pretty perfect!

I do like black but am probably thinking like you Carla, that I should reduce it's role. I used to love black and white monochrome but recently have been disliking it on me (I can see why Fashintern and Suz like it though, it suits their colouring).

I have added my black finds below - I also have two tops and one dress where black is quite dominant in the pattern.

Of these I really love most of them - there are a couple with issues.

- one black tee, one pair of black pants and one black sweater are showing signs of wear
- the black jacket is tricky to wear but I do love it
- I am off the black long sleeve dress
- the jumpsuit has faded and is a washed black now - I "may" redye it - not sure

I will replace the tee and black pants, probably not the sweater.

Notsaf - I do love black activewear:)

Jenni - black is our national colour of course!!

No idea you had so much black! I still find it an essential in winter, which we are still in here right now. I often team pieces with something brighter. It feels quite grounding in work shoes- my new black loafers from early March have had 48 wears now.
I often feel a bit somber in winter. Not actually depressed, but like a mild version of SAD ( seasonal affective disorder) and so I think some black suits my mood. Then I brighten up in spring and brighten the clothing too.
I like your things esp the special occasion wear. My LBD is also 10 years old, bought for my husband’s 50th in October 2010, which was a 1920s style “Godfather” party, so much fun at the time. I still fit it but not worn lately, keeping though for the future.
I have vague wonderings about a taco party for his 60th this October, if we will be allowed more than 10 people over by then.

Oops. I forgot that black isn’t a color. The following was part of my overly-long reply on your other post; I cut and pasted it here.

Charcoal works better for me than blackity-black; i discovered that when I lived in Berlin 25 years ago. People wear a lot of black in this city. In the last decade, I’ve realized that b/w (or black and other light neutral) patterns work even better and enliven my outfits. Even if the other piece is a simple monochromatic item, the pattern wakes up the whole look, imo. True to form, I started adding them without a plan, then realized they are well-represented in my wardrobe and that they fulfill a function.

You’ve got more all-black pieces than I do. I can see why that taffeta ball gown is a 10+. My all-black items are boots I wear a lot, 1 pair of pants, 2 jersey skirts (1 long, 1 short), 1 sweater, a tunic, a faux wrap piece that’s cut so low I wear it as a topper, a SS T-shirt, a LS T-short, and several tanks, mostly with shelf bras. The shirts get a lot of use (I wear the tanks for working out & regular use), and I wore the pants often last winter. I would’ve worn the short skirt more this summer if I’d left the house more. I may wear the long one and the tunic as part of a plague doctor Halloween costume.

ETA TIGHTS. How could I forget that I wear black tights all the time in winter? And there is this dress I’m not counting, because it’s in the holding zone until I lose the belly bump and the dress fits more loosely. When it’s daytime, I’ll look in my wardrobe to see if I’ve forgotten anything else.
