Sara, thanks! These were taken in and around Lovelock, Nevada. The reservoir is on the Humboldt River, which empties into a sink. We used to live at your elevation when we lived at Lake Tahoe, and then later Truckee. We got a lot more snow than we do now at 4600 feet.

Great pics! Where were they taken, if you don't mind me asking? I live in Albuquerque which is considered a high desert - we're at about 5000-6000 feet (the city slopes from the mountain foothills to the river so there's a big elevation change). My neighborhood has feral peacocks roaming around.

Kelly, thanks for the suggestion. I'll look for it.

Windchime, thanks! My husband saw the owls first. They're very hard to find even when you know exactly where they are. When we're driving around we look at all of the big trees carefully, searching for any odd shape or anything that looks out of place. This time of year is much easier than when the leaves come out.

Wonderful pics! You have sharp eyes to spot that owl; it's pretty camouflaged.

Thanks for filling me in! I learned something new today Longmire is a great western, by the way. It's one of the few shows that DH and I both like!

Kelly, thanks! The high desert is generally defined as above 2000 feet in elevation. These pics were taken at about 4000 feet, and we live at about 4600 feet. In #3 there is a peak that is 9800 feet. I'd never heard of Longmire but apparently some of its filming locations in New Mexico are at 7-8000 feet, so it makes sense that they look similar.

Rachy, thanks! I love owls. I wish I could have taken a better picture. The face markings were gorgeous, and she was looking at us.

Sally, thanks! I think so too, that's why I wanted to share. Lots of people think the desert is ugly. It isn't ugly, it's just different.

Angie, thanks! "Our" phone takes pretty good pictures!

The mountain photos are stunning. It looks very Longmire! I am embarrassed to say that I don't really know what the high desert is but wherever it is, it is ruggedly beautiful!

This is a typical birding trip in the high desert in winter. These pictures are from my cell phone.

Driving out, in the rain.
The mountains are spectacular.
The reservoir is frozen.
A peacock! It's not going on our bird list - it's not a wild bird.
Sorry, such a bad picture - a great horned owl in the center - the pair was on private property and we couldn't go closer.
Wild turkeys! They're kind of aggressive.
It was really muddy.

We also saw Mountain Bluebirds, dozens of Red Tail Hawks, Ferruginous Hawks, and a Rough Legged Hawk.
