Thank you for your perspective on this Greg. And for sharing your photographers perspective on fashion week.
You mention liking to be able to shoot photos of the audience. What do you find more interesting about shooting audience photos, the reactions of the audience or what they're wearing? Or something else?
And count me among your fans, as I am looking forward to your FW photos next month. Any chance we could get a 'through the lens' report on FW? I know, I'm greedy, and just want everything.

Such fun insights into the whole process--thanks for sharing a bit of your world, Greg! Fashion shows are so bizarre when you think about it, with the months of preparation culminating in a few minutes, surrounded by photographers scrambling to get some decent shots. Nutty, but very exciting to watch from afar :).

I love this question. And thanks for a glimpse of your view behind the scenes, Greg.

Bill snaps pictures the entire day long, in the street, during the shows, high-profile parties... pics of people he knows and of strangers, and it all seems to feel the same to him.
I think you're right: him having thick skin (something developed over the years perhaps, or maybe it was always the case) is definitely part of that. Plus, he just seems so focussed on the clothes, the movement of fabrics and how to best shoot a certain outfit that he hardly notices anything else.

I remember that during the shows Bill too preferred a seat in the audience to get better and more interesting shots. Great minds think alike!

I have a feeling shooting the shows is extremely stressful. You only have a very limited amount of time to get one great shot and every photographer in the room needs the same thing.

Your NYFW photos are fantastic, full of life, detail and colour, and for me, really bring the excitement of the shows AND the vividness of the beautiful clothes straight to my computer. Next best thing to being there:-)

Deborah, so excited to FINALLY give you an overdue hug. I very biasedly think that Greg takes the best photos at Fashion Week. Although capturing street style is not his thing - so that we leave to Bill. People just generally pose for Bill, anyway!

Greg, thanks for sharing your perspective on this. I would get so flustered in that media riser than none of my photographs would ever turn out. I admire your ability to work in what are obviously challenging conditions.

While watching the documentary, I also wondered about street photography/privacy concerns. That didn't seem to be addressed at all, except in the one scene where a couple of girls threatened to break his camera if he took pictures of them. He just laughed it off!

I loved the documentary and I admire Bill Cunningham's focus and integrity. He knows what he loves to do, and he obviously doesn't like compromising his vision. I envy his thick skin. I am very self conscious about photographing people in the street, and how they might perceive that as an invasion of their privacy. He has no qualms about this.

During fashion week I have shot from almost every possible position. Front row, back row, middle row, and the media riser (where you see all the photographers -- the picture below, for example).

The places you might expect me to like the most, the front row and the media riser, I like the least.

The front row has three problems. (1) there is very little flexibility in the shot you can get, (2) people behind me get obscured by me and my giant lens and (3) I can get fewer interesting shows of the audience.

The media riser is a zoo. There is a lot of jostling and on at least one occasion I have got into it with another photographer. But the main problem with the riser is that the pictures you get, AT BEST, are going to look like every other photographer's pictures (style.com, etc.). Frontal, completely lit. Perfectly boring. And... no photos of the audience.

My preference is roaming around behind the audience taking pictures from different positions. Sometimes this gets very tricky when the shows are packed and it is hard to get a clear shot. You also seldom get perfect head to toe shots, and the lighting is insane because every part of the runway seems to be lit a little differently. Angie has to put up with a lot of cursing later as I try to white balance all the shots. Still, I love doing it this way. Every show comes out different.

I know Greg doesn't usually jump into the conversation fray but I would love to hear the thoughts of the YLF photographer on this.
One question I would ask is would you like the chance to sit front row at a NYFW show and get to photograph from that perspective the way Bill does or do you prefer being back in the photographers gallery?
