I used to use clips all the time and loved them. Especially if it was drizzling. Before clips, I was caught in light rain a few times and slipped off the pedals. However, I have also had a couple of bad spills and not been able to disengage the clips. One in particular really scared me and I won't use them anymore. So, I will throw this out, maybe taking some time to practice disengaging over and over would be helpful. And maybe after riding is almost second nature. Either way, biking is AWESOME !!!!! In the end, you will figure out what works for you.

I use mini toe clips or "city clips" on my bike. They just go over your toes and are easy to slip in and out of, but give you a little extra pedaling power. I've known too many people who have fallen while clipped in, with results ranging from embarrassment to bike-ride-ending injury, and the risk is not worth it to aging and clumsy me. I ride between two and ten miles (3-16 km) every day, and used them on a multi-day long-distance bike trip of 350 miles (560 km).

Joyce B, that's funny!

Thank you Gaylene. How funny to hear what your relatives say.

Well, I've had my cycling lesson and I declare that I am a novice and even if I wanted clips, I'm not ready for them! I leant a lot and it was extremely helpfu.

Learnt how to go over road humps without letting the force go up through my arms, my bending my elbows and knees and standing up, and I also learnt how to use my body weight to go round corners.

So more practising and may be next year.

Thank you all for your words of wisdom.

Clips are definitely the way to go if you are into athletic cycling for all the reasons Janet mentions. That said, I'm not convinced they are necessarily the best option for commuter/recreational cycling where you stop and start a lot or where there are a mix of walkers, dogs, kids, etc. using the same trails. In those situations, I generally prefer my cages since speed and efficiency aren't priorities. And, while dead stop falls are mostly embarassing, they aren't always minor falls.

I'm as big a gear head as anyone when it comes to cycling, but I find it ironic that my Danish relatives, who use their bikes instead of cars for transportation in all kinds of weather, ride around in street clothes and regular shoes. Even helmets are rarely worn by adults. They tease me about dressing for "Le Tour" when they see me in my riding shorts, helmet, and clips.

MsMary, that sounds sore and the thought of an accident with clips, sounds horrid. I cycled yesterday and tried to use all of my foot. The lesson is tomorrow, so I will let you know how it goes.

Aziraphale, I am accident prone, so I think a slow fall is inevitable with clips, for me!

It is really helpful to have a collective view.

I got some clips and the first time I went out to practice I fell over and landed HARD with my rear end on the seat of the bike. I still have a dent in my tush. Not super anxious to repeat that experience so for now I am declaring a moratorium on clips until I have a lot more bandwith to practice. Lovely Fiance swears by clips, but he had a very bad accident a couple of years ago when he couldn't unclip, and that scares me. I may well just go clipless forever...

My hubs bikes a very long way to work, and he uses clips. He has special clip shoes that clip into his bike pedals. Janet did a good job of explaining why they are useful.

There is always the possibility that you will have an accident because you can't get your feet out of the clips in time, of course. Usually these accidents are very minor because you are stopped, or nearly stopped, when the bike tips over! It's always good for a laugh, though.

I thought you meant adding clips to the back of the bike so you could bring home the shopping that you left in the store the other day ! I am obviously of no help here. Good luck with your biking technique lessons.

I have never been a fan of cages (tried them back in my mountain biking days long ago). My clips are VERY easy to get my feet out of in a hurry -- just a quick slight twist to the side and my cleats disengage.

I have fallen over once at a dead stop and felt like a complete dolt because, of course, it was at an intersection in front of about a dozen cars, but at least when you fall over at a standstill it's likely the only thing that gets hurt is your pride.

Thank you Beth Ann - yes I was thinking about the SPD system, which I think are the ones that are reversible, so you can put your foot in the clip, or not.

Ahh SandyG, the falls sound painful. Thank you for sharing.

ClaraT, thank you, yes it is the falls that concern me. The SPD system may help a bit, and I only so far have done road biking.

I reckon it is good for me to know how to pedal well regardless of the type of shoe / clip etc. Also, I will ask the coach to help me ride corners and give me confidence going downhill. I've a lot to learn :)

I use cages not clips (slide your toe in cages). I've witnessed 3 accidents in which mountain bikers couldn't disengage their clips and fell over, so clips scare me. But maybe a good choice for road biking.

Most of us who cycle in cleats/clips have that one moment -- when we fall over. My uber-cyclist hubby did it at a stop light, to his embarrassment. I did it when I hit a spot of deep sand on my off-road bike (plop). However, it's never as scary as you think it will be, and you get in the habit of pulling your foot back off the pedal, instead of up.

I am assuming you're talking about the cleat/clip option, not the toe cages, right?

I use the SPD system -- it's cheaper and more than adequate for most cyclists. I use the same shoes for my road and off-road bikes.

Good luck!

I am not a cyclist but my DH is a serious one. He only uses clips for the same reasons Janet mentions. He did say there is a technique involved in the stop so you don't topple over. But essential for long distance rides.

I am a big convert to clips now that I've been using them for the last two years and riding longer distances. They help to reduce fatigue in certain muscles by allowing me to get more power throughout the full pedaling movement, not just pushing down on the pedals. I moved to clips on the advice of someone who coaches, even though I've never had a cycling coaching session myself. I'm sure there are techniques I am not aware of that may enable efficient pedaling even without clips, but I have no plans to go back to clipless for the type of riding I do, especially when it involves more hilly terrain. To each their own though!

I wear bike shoes (with clips) for spin classes only as I don't get going quite that aggressively while actually riding outside It does make a HUGE difference though in how your leg and foot muscles activate.

Thank you all for your sensible advice on the padded knickers a few months back. I bought an expensive pair, thank you Janet and Runcarla for suggesting.

I am thinking that I ought to be thinking about clips now. I have however just booked a cycling lesson with a cyclist who said it was about technique, and that if you get the technique right, then clips aren't necessarily the answer. I will let you know how that goes.

I wondered what experience fabbers have had of using clips?
