New York in March can still be very cold. I was there last year in late March (the last week of March) and it was freezing (polar vortex). I had a puffer, warm boots, thick sweaters etc.

Whereas Southern Cal might be very warm! It all depends on the week but a friend of mine who lives there told me the temps were in the 80s last week!

I would check the 10-day weather forecast closer to your departure, but regardless, I would pack for a range of temperatures (including lighter layers to cover up in A/C). Not very practical, I know...

As for campus dress codes... It depends on the campus and the school. I'm an academic so I speak from experience--however, I'm a faculty member and we tend to be a more casual and varied bunch than staff for example. But I see parents touring my Midwest campus in all sorts of outfits, from dressy to sloppy. LA would likely be more casual than NYC, but I don't think it would matter... "modern classic" sounds about right for both.

Make sure your shoes are comfortable for those campus walking tours, and for walking from parking lots to your destination.

It's very likely you'll need something warmer than what you've described. A thin quilted down or tech insulated jacket might be enough under your trench. I'm thinking the trench is appropriate for rain too?
I wouldn't worry too much, you'll be in NY., if you really need something you'll be able to find it!

What to pack, what to wear??!! Early next month we visit the New York area and L.A. to tour colleges and universities with my son. The aim is to narrow the field in terms of where he will apply to study in the United States. We live on the West Coast in Canada and he will apply to a school here but in his chosen field the U.S. schools are considered superior. Our trip will be about a week.

What has me in a bit of a tizzy is the challenge of packing for the diverse weather and also being at a bit of a loss as to what the dress code, if any is for visiting these institutions. I have a nice Spring selection hung up on my rolling rack in shades of navy, light grey, blue, white with a bit of black. I am concerned it is way to light for New York but it will layer nicely. For example I have a very light trench in navy and a sleeveless vest in pale grey cashmere that can be worn together for some warmth but maybe I need a warm coat? My style is "dramatic classic" in the Kibbe system and a friend once described my wardrobe as "classic, sophisticated with a bit of an edge", that is to say "modern classic".

Any suggestions, particularly for "flop proof " outfits for touring schools?

Thanks in advance ladies.....
