I like stripes a lot but I have noticed that there are just way too many stripes everywhere in the stores right now. DD and I were just talking about this last weekend, we walked into AT and both of us couldn't help notice that it was a sea of navy, white and... stripes. Navy & white stripes, to be specific.

This has not prevented me from just now ordering a striped midi tube skirt. I already have a couple striped tops, and a few striped dresses. I do not yet have a striped tube skirt. Stripes are classics and I treat them like I do any other basic -- but just as I only need so many basic black dresses or basic black tees, I only need just so many basic striped articles of clothing.

As to your BF, is it possible that he's simply making an effort to care about fashion as much as you do? Maybe he has also noticed that stripes are everywhere in every store right now. Maybe his concern is that it's a fad that has peaked, not a classic that will never be out of style?

I view it as a classic and *also* a fad that is totally peaking. When classic fads peak, that is when I snap them up, because of the whole petite thing -- us petites don't ever get first dibs on emerging trends. We have to wait for fad peak to stock up. Which is what I'm doing right now -- focusing on classic items that will last, just with currently faddish stripes.

I have long since trained my DH , to by all means speak up, and in some cases will wear things he's not fond of in other parts of my life... He works a lot so plenty of time for me to accomodate... If he said no to stripes , I am not sure it's one I would accomodate... Usually it's shoe preferences with him... I'd probably take him to my closet and show him how much I would have to leave out and that it was too much to give him that one...
So it just all depends on the preference and how strongly I feel the opposite... Great advice from marriage counselor is on scale of one to ten how strongly do you each feel, very rarely that both are at a 10...

I am the same way about stripes and dots. Something about the symmetry and periodic nature of the pattern messes with my head. Admire them on others but have donated or returned every single striped item I have bought in the last few years. I am inordinately fond of checks, plaids, paisley, florals etc.

Do you love wearing stripes? Are they a pattern you enjoy? Do they make you feel good? If you answered "yes" to any of those questions, then to heck with him, wear what YOU like. If he doesn't like stripes, he doesn't have to wear them.

I do see how he might think that they're "overdone," but I personally LOVE them, and I probably own more striped garments than anyone SHOULD own, because they make me happy. If they make you happy, you should wear them. There are more important and easier ways to make your boyfriend happy than your clothing choices. :-)

In terms of flattery (not a huge concern for our Mo ), it really depends on your shape (not just size) and the garment I think. The right striped top can highlight my slim rib cage area, but the wrong tube skirt outlines my large hips and then narrows down to do the same for my skinny lower thigh and knees, exaggerating the already substantial proportion difference - well, HOLY HIPS BATMAN! But a fuller wide-striped skirt *with the right stripe placement* might work fine. I don't think there's any simple rule of thumb.
Signed, a stripe lover!

I don't wear any stripes- I will wear geo prints though.

Horizontal stripes of any sort... narrow or wide do not suit me at all.

I might have more luck with the vertical or maybe 45 Deg stripe but I don't see them very much in garments.

I don't mind them on others... but somehow it has rubbed off to everyone in the house-LOL . I don't think between the five of us that there is one striped garment !

When I first met my husband he wore rugby shirts that had stripes, but nothing the last 15 years or more.

Mine recently told me he doesn't like men's shirts with button holes on the collar, and never has. "Well now," I replied, "I've been buying shirts for you for 25 years - it would've been nice to know that, oh say, 25 years ago!" Geez!

My husband has commented once when I have been wearing something too often. I used to hang out in the house and clean in these gingham pull-on shorts. I never knew how much he disliked them until he reached his breaking point and said something about them. :-) They were pretty hideous.

I am not a stripe fan. I like them in home decor. I like them on others -- a lot -- but think they are probably not right for me. I am somewhat busty and larger. If I do decide to wear stripes in the future, I am confused about the thickness of the stripe.

As kiristi2004 mentions, some say to wear a narrow stripe if you are larger for a more flattering look, but recently I read in a fashion book that larger people should wear a larger stripe (2 inches). So who knows. :-)

Funny. I would quiz him some more and see if there's anything else that he doesn't like about it that he's not articulating. I had a red cardigan years ago with navy and white trim. I wore it all the time because it went with everything. One day hubs told me how sick he was of that sweater because I wore it all the time. After pressing him, he said a neutral sweater would have been fine, but he was tired of me "looking like a flag" all the time, lol.

Rachy that is a motto for life. I guess the thing about wide contrasting knit stripes, is that you can't NOT see them on others, so if you see a lot of them (not just on you but on other people and in stores) it can get fatiguing?

I'm with rachylou and Diane on not really liking stripes on my myself as much, but I do have a pinstriped gray maxi skirt (but I haven't worn it yet... hmmmm). I also have a striped Old Navy long sleeve tee that I got for 2$ on clearance and I'm contemplating whether it's embarrassing to take back for store credit as it still has the tags. It just looked too I dunno, preppy classic on me in retrospect.

I love it when stripes go in unexpected directions or optically distort or something though.

As to whether you wear the skirt with the boyfriend? I don't think it matters either way. I wear things I feel beautiful in but my guy is meh about when I ask him, but also keep pieces that I was on the fence about but he really loves me in -- I probably wear the latter more when we have a full day together.

I'm going to be a bit of a spanner here.... In my mind it depends on how many of these preferences he has. If he has so many that it makes getting dressed hard, then I'd say you're going to have to disregard at least a few of those preferences. If he's generally supportive and appreciative, maybe wear the skirt when you're not spending the day with him? What would it hurt to delight him with what you have on?

I would say definitely go for the stripes. Stripes will always remain in style. Stripes is just how you wear them. Only overweight people can't wear huge horizontal stripes. Very narrow stripes are actually flattering. Vertical stripes obviously make people look longer and leaner. Stripes is the all american look. I say, go for what makes you happy and ignore what your boyfriend says. You have to make yourself happy first. Have a good day.

I find this really odd! I'm neither here nor there about them. But when I was looking for a maxi dress he commented more than once that stripes were just so overdone. lol
Then, last night, as I was showing him my new Stylish Girl app I'd downloaded and how it has a calendar feature where you mark when you'd worn an outfit, he said I'd been wearing my VC tube skirt too much! HA! He said if I'd recorded it I'd see that. Well, since it's been worn maybe 6 or 7 times that I can recall, it's obviously his bias against stripes making him notice when I do wear it. Too funny.
I've heard of folks not liking certain colors or even styles (polo shirts over here) but a pattern as universal as stripes??
So now do I ration out my striped skirt wears or just say to heck with him, I look good?
