I really like this prompt to reflect on previous purchases. Thank you to Likes the Season.

I loved two pairs of shoes, both Angie picks. The Adidas superstar slip-ons are comfy, fun and elevate other wise plain outfits into a little something special. My pair are starting to look ragged (I’m sure I easily hit 30 wears) and I’m likely to replace them. The Blondo Moto boots were a bit of a impulse purchase but, wow, did I enjoy having them and wore them very frequently. Fairly comfy (at least for work) and warm, waterproof. I’m realizing now that I found the shaft height particularly useful with my wardrobe so I should use that info to guide me this year.

My other top faves were knee length cashmere cardigans. Buying two was a splurge but it was so valuable to have both of those color options. I wore them as toppers at work in winter and as outerwear on dry days in Spring and Fall. I just wore the tan one a week ago to an evening baseball game in San Francisco. It’s so lightweight in a bag (if a little bulky) and works well for travel because it can serve as a bathrobe. I’ve done some recent de-pilling on the tan one and they are ready to go for at least another year.

Ok, I bought a lot last year! I also loved the Lafayette reversible vest. It was an immediate YES! when I saw it online. Exactly the thing for my desired type of dressing. I don’t wear it as frequently as the cardis but I’ve gotten great use and I always feel good wearing it. It will last for a long, long time barring a run-in with a vat of oil (although, it’s reversable)!

The Munro smoking slippers have been a bit of a disappointment for me. I thought I was pushing my style with them but I think they are a little refined for my taste and just never fit my feet just right. It is nice to have them available for holidays and other special occasions so I will definitely keep them.

I didn’t end up with much from the NAS last year, just undies and a necklace, but each was a hit. Also still have winners from previous years; Trina Turk Coat, Vince sneakers and Aquatalia Moto Boots. Oh and a Brahmin purse. No worst here.

Each year I allow myself one NAS purchase. Living in Australia, it is just too risky with the lack of being able to return to try different sizes etc, so it just has to be something that I love and will know will work for me.

My purchases have been classics:
2017: Kate Spade tweed jacket
2016: The R&B Gilet
I am actually wearing the R&B gilet now and both pieces are in heavy rotation in my closet and are of great quality. These were Angie picks, and I really value the forum to provide something that is not available locally as a great refresher for my wardrobe at the end of our winter!

Given my very few purchases, no items that I would classify as failures.

I bought mostly shoes and boots at last year's sale.

I had two *huge* winners.

The Mephisto oxfords in black suede and the Munro Smoking Slippers in black velvet were major workhorses for me this past year. They were unbelievably comfortable right out of the box, and while very different style wise, they each filled a place.

The Munro booties, however, were a horrible disappointment. The heel was just a little too high, and the top of the boot occasionally rubbed my ankle. Nothing you'd notice trying on, more like after a couple of hours at your desk. I still have them because they are waterproof, but they may not make the cut when I start bringing out the winter footwear.

I love the Trouve jacket from last year. Got lots of use out of that. And I also got a gorgeous maroon lace skirt with a zipper up the back that was a wild card that became an MVP. I don't have a link or find for that one.

The Spanx leggings ended up being an orphan. (Were these last year? Maybe I got them the year before. I can't recall. The years are starting to run together.)

I got some LaCanadienne tall boots in 2016. (I see they are still selling the exact same model this year.) They are winners, and I will be re-soling them to take them into year three. When I bought these, I had a plan to buy a good waterproof boot that was dressy enough to wear with dressy clothing. As it turns out, they became an everyday workhorse.

I bought this navy peacoat in 2017. It was a lot of money, unplanned, but I’d always wanted one. I wore it a moderate amount (maybe 15 times last year) though I would have worn it more had I not bothered to ration wears. I needed to ration wears as I want this coat to last a long time and my experience with wool coats is that they will only last a couple of years if you wear them all winter long, even if they are high quality ones.

So this peacoat was a winner too and I plan on rationing wears this year too.

Finally, I bought an absolutely bright white THe North Face raincoat. Not a practical colour but so worth it!! I don’t wear this very much but I definitely need it.

I have not made any mistakes at NAS but have returned a lot, lol!

My best was two or three years ago when I bought the Longchamp expandable tote similar to the one Barbara Diane shows but in light gray. I use it opened up for my Nordstrom online returns and then zip it up for my return trip. I also bought a Skagen watch that I wear fairly frequently.

I have a number of items I thought I would wear a lot more frequently. Some of it has to do with the weather in a particular year.

Two years ago I got a Nik+Zoe long cardigan in multiple colors of black, red, purple. I wore it a lot, my go to outfit for slightly dressy occasions. I also bought a double-breasted James Perse knit jacket that I have no memory of, so I think I returned it.

So last year I bought another cardi from same N+Z. This one was navy with interesting weaves and slightly tweedy. Not so long, with sleeves that flared at the wrists. At first I wore it a lot, but eventually I felt frumpy wearing it. Tweeds aren't my favorite, although I still have an EF gray tweed moto that I bought in 2013. I bought another black N+Z top with fake studs on the sleeves--also flared at above wrists. I didn't wear it until late spring. I've worn it 3 or 4 times and it has snags, the neckline doesn't suit me, and those darn sleeves. It's just not me, but I bought it in the spirit of adventure.

I do well with bras and panties. Try to stock up. I also buy long sleeved cotton tees, but don't see anything I like in my colors this year. I also do well with Paige jeans.

I've had good and bad results with shoes and boots. This year I plan on sending back any shoes that aren't perfect--no waiting to see if I can break them in.

Maybe next week I'll go to the mall. Maybe.

Over the last 3? years that I’ve shopped NAS, the standout favorites are my Longchamp nylon expandable tote and my Skagen watch. The Nike’s are so comfortable. I love my watch and I like the look, weight, and capacity of the tote. I also have a pair of earrings I really like that gets more use than expected once I started using them for daytime also.

Hardly worn are two bold print dresses. I thought they were a new direction for me, but they were not. And they were too warm for cold weather and too hot for warm weather. I thought I would like them with leggings but I do not. Sadly I returned the third dress because I wasn’t wearing the first two enough and hadn’t worn it yet. But it was a beautiful solid blue that fit amazingly and would have been much more useful.

In the past I’ve ordered a lot but not had that much success, so I don’t count on NAS to replenish my wardrobe.

Great question - last year i bought alot.
Loved
Tahari leather jacket - worn weekly
Pink velvet zip up hoody - worn almost weekly
Navy blue peplum shirt - in high rotation
I also bought 4 pair of black pants that are all still going strong in rotation
Didn’t like
Black quilted faux bomber - why i bought it i don’t know i don’t really like the bomber style on me. Plus after 3rd wear back arm seam ripped out
Peplum army green top - in concept it is good when i wear it it just doesn’t feel like my style looks decent on me

Hangs head in shame stll has tags on
Leopard jacket - love it and it looks great on me - i don’t know why i haven’t worn it

This is my 4th sale and this year i finally feel like i got it figured out.

Best: 1. ASICS Gel Nimbus running shoes at the lowest price ever! I purchased six pairs! LOL! I have burned through 4 of them and may get two more so I can have a supply for this year. 1.5....Brooks/Moving Comfort Fiona sports bra. People on the forum were worried because the elastic band was altered from previous versions but it has been fine for me. Still a winning design that is chafe free on long runs.

2. Frame Denim Jeans, a big surprise how much I loved these. I wore them out. They were very flattering and perfect for the transition between summer and fall.

3. Mephisto Oxford shoes, super comfortable.

4. BCBG faux rap dress. For whatever reason, this dress looks great with jeans.

5. Plastic makeup organizer, keeps everything neat on my counters.

6. Rebecca Taylor peplum tweed blazer

7. My favorite perfume.

Last year I concentrated on cardigans. The hits were the two BP lightweight rib stitch cardis. I wore them to death over sleepwear instead of a robe. They hit the trash when I warmed up in April. My big disappointment was the Halogen scallop edge sweater. I loved the color but it was too short for my liking. After several attempt at wearing I passed it to my neighbor.

The thing I liked best was the Tahari moto. I actually bought it after NAS. During NAS I ordered it in the burgundy color, but returned it because the color wasn’t quite right for me. Soon after, it came out in olive which I ordered and kept. I adore it! The other thing that was very good was the North Face puffer. I’m not as enamored with it, but wow has it been useful, being worn again and again.

I didn’t have any bad things. I ordered a ton of things, but returned most of them.

I mostly sat out last NAS, but I'd been tempted by this beautiful Equipment silk tee. After the sale ended, I grabbed the top when it popped back into stock at a deep discount. I love it.

From last year my best is a toss up between black Aquatalia knee high boots (Suz posted above) that fit my narrow calves and were not too high and the trendy Paige Hoxton jeans. The boots will serve me for years, a classic riding style. The jeans make me feel amazing and stylish with their step raw edge bottoms and high waist. My worst was probably the BP crushed "velvet" top.( find in Suz's post). I thought it would be ideal for cold spring, but, though it is warm, the short sleeves make it harder to wear. Maybe this year I will wear it more. Many times may NAS items get more wear the second year. In general, my NAS impulse buys and high ticket items turn out to be favorites over those I over think

All of my NAS purchases last year were pretty good. My favorites are the Halogen tweed moto (its the perfect topper for me - adds a little formality but doesn’t look as officey as a blazer) and the rag and bone dre jeans (no surprise there - they’re my favorite jeans, I own multiple pairs, and purchased another at this year’s NAS).

My fail is actually from 2 years ago, but it’s avalable every year at NAS - the Caslon knit blazer. Even after I got the sizing right (it runs huuuuge), it still feels rather schlumpy and neither here nor there. (I’d rather wear a cardigan or a real, more structured blazer). Lots of people like it though, so it does work for others.

Oh wow. This is a great question. It has taken me 6 seasons to figure this sale out, and I still mess up occasionally. However, I get better and better at plotting and planning.

Here's my loot from last year: https://youlookfab.com/finds/c.....ction=4595

This is what I kept. I ordered more and sent back some.

Favourite purchases (aside from basics): The Hinge scarf. (A WOW statement scarf, worn all the time. Would not have splurged on it at regular price.) Halogen earrings. (Simple, have worn them almost every day since purchase. Best CPW of anything ever!) Halogen red cardigan. (A super useful cross-seasonal piece that looks great with dresses, skirts, and pants and adds a fun pop of colour to my core neutrals of navy, ink, grey, white).

Least favourite: Halogen red kick crops (I don't like kick crops on myself); Cece bell sleeve top (I can't handle bell sleeves and didn't like the fabric. Too bad because the colour was delicious!)

Other close contenders for favourite: EF asymmetrical sweater. (A core neutral in an interesting and unusual shape at a great price). BP crushed velvet top. (An inexpensive trendy wildcard for casual dress up situations.) Aquatalia riding boot. (A splurge and investment that will be in my closet for at least a decade.)

Past sale favourites include the other Finds. What unites them: mostly high quality pieces, either signature wardrobe items, or statement items, in key neutrals. Practical as well as beautiful. Relatively higher price tag but (apart from the gilet which is a real statement item and does not get many outings in my casual life) excellent cost per wear.

These were my 3 times from last years NAS. The EF jacket is unique. Warm enough as outerwear for fall and spring, but novel and can be worn indoors. Religious, funeral, work, dressy casual, a unique piece. Favorite piece was the JP long jacket, fleece but dressy enough in black for work, play, soft, warm, well cut and elegant. Again great swing piece. I owned the Le Pliage in nylon black, the leather is an upgrade. Not used all the time but I'm happy to have it. This year, I pretty much only want the RM Merilee jacket if possible. I need a winter coat but I have not seen anything on the sale that wows me. It's too important a purchase to not love something. I will wait till prefall comes in and continue to stalk. But blazers are my thing, especially long blazers, I must make hay while the sun does shine!

Last year, it was the Halogen cashmere ribbed cardigan and a pair of Argento Vivo earrings for me. I wore both a lot through the fall and winter, and can’t wait to wear them again this fall. The year before, a Hinge denim skirt, EF boiled wool jacket, and Aquatalia booties were winners. All have many wears (i’m wearing the skirt today) and will be pulled out again for the right season. My “fails” included a pink Chelsea 1 jacket- too heavy to wear indoors, and too short for outerwear, and a Vince dress that I wore a lot, but should have held up better, given the price- those were both 2013 purchases, so I’ve learned a lot since then.

ETA- also a black Tahari sheath dress, purchased in 2012 or 2014, is still going strong. The cut/neckline/sleeves are a bit dated, but I wear it with a more updated jacket.

I've been impressed by the care with which many fabbers plan and budget for this sale every year. Gryffin's blazer post got me wondering: What were your favorite purchases from last year's sale? What were your least favorite? And why?
