Rolling is a good idea.

I used to be a shopgirl. We had folding boards to help make a smooth fold. Eventually, you get to where you can do it without the board.

I fold mine and store on a wire shelf in the spare bedroom closet. I never really noticed them get too wrinkled.

The hanger, pictured at left, is really, really good for most knits. It is covered with rubbery stuff that grips, and the curve doesn't deform most knits. These are also great to keep straps in place, by the way. Some knits are too fragile even for these excellent hangers. Sometimes it works for me to turn them inside out, and use a skirt hanger (right) from the shoulder seam allowance, or from the bottom hem. Others don't like that either, and get folded.

I am a hanger snob. All my hangers are "good" hangers, like this. I get them from hangersdirect.com. Wait for 20% off and free shipping--hangers are very heavy!

folded using a standard dept store fold, but with the front folded in the inside.i found that folding the regular way causes increased wear on the front with faster pilling. for really special things, i turn it inside out before folding and putting on the shelf.

then i pile on an open shelf sorted by type. i do not hang sleeved knits other than dresses. even then, i make sure that the corners of the hangers match the shoulder seam.

I havent heard of the roll and stack - I think I might also try that. I do not use a dryer so I find everything is a bit wrinkled. I use a steamer on my knits.

Rolling sounds like a great idea. I've been folding mine and then the day before I want to wear one (or sometimes in the morning) I hang them on a hangar and spray them with water in the wrinkled places. It's pretty dry here so it works very quickly.

Like MaryK, I roll mine and stack them on a shelf. Not too wrinkly and doesn't take up too much space.

i saw a method where you fold the knit in half up and down then drape the sleeve one side of the hanging hook and the body on the other sie... does that make sense? so its kind of hanging over the hanger not put onto the hanger... mine dont seem to fall off

Rolling may leave fewer wrinkles than folding. Try that.

If you feel you must hang them, try to find hanger with very wide "shoulders". The heavy, wooden hangers I use for my heavy coats have shoulders like these. Less likely to leave "shoulder bumps". There are probably lighter weight versions out there, meant to relieve this exact problem.

One other thought would be to hang your knits by draping them over the bottom bar of the hanger. Again, choose a hanger that is wide in that area, to avoid a wrinkle across the midsection of your knits.

I'm talking about things like long sleeve T shirts or fine jersey tops. Spring and Fall clothes where I live.

Over last summer I left them on padded hangers and had stretched out shoulder bumps on all of them come Fall. So over the winter I folded them up in a box...and had a wrinkled mess come Spring.

I guess ironing is less damaging than stretched out shoulders. I'm just wondering if there is a third, better, alternative now that it is time to let them hibernate again.
