Personally I find that any lip balm with sunscreen makes my lips worse. Also sadly lipstick. Burt's Beeswax is my personal best lip balm. If you haven't tried it yet, give it a try. I also like Cold cream lip balm from Avene. It actually gives me a nice neutral color. But Burt's Bees is the absolute best from a healing and protection standpoint.

Every single winter I struggle with chapped lips and spend a fortune on different lip balms none of which work for long. My current routine is lush lip scrub a couple of times a week, twice a day I wipe them with rosewater on a cotton pad, smooth on some melvita extraordinary water, give it a couple of seconds to dry and top that with Hydraluron, give that a couple of seconds to dry then put on some palmers concentrated cream. I try to remember everytime I go out to put on something that is thick to protect from the cold and wind. At night I add nuxe rev de miel on top. If they become cracked and bleeding I use Blistex relief cream. Hope you find some relief x

Well, I started with the lanolin (thanks, Beck) and the petroleum jelly, because I had those on hand. The lanolin worked pretty well, but it tasted horrible (I put it on right before lunch, lol...let's just say it doesn't go well with watermelon). The petroleum jelly was too sticky and goopy for my taste.

Annagybe, I was just at Sephora today but hadn't read your comment yet! I'll keep the mask in mind. I like the Bite Beauty products.

I bought the Evan Healy lip balm (thanks, La Pedestrienne!)--saw it at the co-op tonight on sale by the cash registers. It's a nice consistency--not quite as thick as the lanolin, but still really substantial. I'll try this for a couple of days and see how it goes.

Thanks again, everyone!

If you're OK with animal products, I like plain old lanolin -- I keep a big tub at the house and use the little tubes marketed to nursing parents when I'm on the go (the tubes do say "for chapped nipples" in kind of big print, which is I guess a bit awkward ... but the stuff works!). Jars are normally with the health food stuff at the supermarket, and tubes in the aisle with the baby food.

Seconding Gaylene re: the chemical sunscreens. Octinoxate is actually one of the ones I'm NOT allergic to, funnily enough. I am allergic to either avobenzone or oxybenzone, possibly both, so I avoid products that contain those. The safest bet if you want a sunscreen is zinc oxide or titanium oxide, which are physical sunscreens.

Try a lip balm that doesn't include a chemical sunscreen. I found out the hard way I was allergic to octinoxate, a popular sunscreen added to many lip balms.

I used plain old Vaseline in the morning at night for a couple of weeks, and Aquaphor during the day, until my lips healed.

I hear you! I've had so much trouble with dry, flaky lips. I recently invested in two products from FRESH and my lips have been transformed. They are soft and the flakes have been banished. They are pricey but a little goes a long way so they will last for quite a while. I use the Polish a couple times a week (or as needed) and I use the Lip Conditioner all the time....when I wake up, when I go to bed and throughout the day as needed.

Another fan of Aquaphor. If you are wearing lipstick that may be what is drying out your lips. Even the ones that are supposed to be moisturizing never work for me. I use Aquaphor first and put oil on at night.

My lips do not respond well to most lip balms, lipsticks, etc. So, when my lips are really chapped I do a sugar/honey scrub with a drop of oil (argan, jojoba, E, whatever you have). If you don't want to use sugar, you can sub baking soda for the sugar and just use a drop of oil instead of the honey.

Then I use a tiny bit of Elizabeth Arden Eight Hour Cream. It's really more of a balm than a cream. I received a sample tube and on whim used it for my lips. Amazing results!

I use something called Vaniply, which is similar to aquaphor but supposed to be better for sensitive skin (my dermatologist BIL recommended it to me). Straight up Vaseline works too but smells and feels gross.

The problem with all these things is that you have to apply them with your finger, which I dislike when I'm on the go! Wish I could find something in stick form.

Vaseline. I keep a small jar on my nightstand and a tube in every handbag and jacket. It keeps my lips from getting dry. No flavored stuff though, that has never worked for me. I like to wear a bright red lipstick so smooth moisturized lips are a must.

Never use lip balms! They actually aggravate the problem, often dramatically. The best approach is to apply vaseline or Aquaphor, try not to lick your lips, and try not to expose them too much to cold air outside. Best of luck -- chapped lips are annoying, I know!

My lips rarely get chapped but I'm addicted to lip balm and have it everywhere - on my nightstand, on my desk, in my purse, etc. and use it constantly. However, my kids get super chapped and I use Aquaphor on them. It's very thick and greasy so I usually put it on them before they go to bed and it heals their lips within a day or two.

My dd experienced the worst chapped lips when on accutane. We tried every type of of lip chap we could find. Eventually she settled on old school blistex. It was the only thing that really helped with cracking and bleeding.

Gigi -- put me in the category of those who have tried every lip balm out there. I have noticed that some are "oily" (petroleum based) and some are "waxy" (wax based).

For me, the oily ones make things far worse, while the waxy ones are soothing. I've tried all standard drugstore formulas as well as everything in the healthfood store.

Nothing, by the way, actually heals my lips, which just shed their dead, dry skin and then form a new layer of dead, dry skin. This has been true for me over the past 35 years and I've never found a solution.

My son says all the younger girls (his girlfriends tend to be soccer players, so out on the pitch in nasty raw weather) swear by "the one that looks like a glue stick" -- which turns out to be Palmers: https://www.amazon.com/Palmers.....c&

Hydration is important, like Ledonna says. I used to be strict about 8 glasses a day; I've relaxed into just making sure I have a glass with each meal (3x a day) plus every time I have coffee or a snack (also ~3x a day).

Using an unflavored lip balm may help -- the ones that are sweet will tempt you to lick it off, even if it's unconscious, and the licking makes your lips drier.

For a while I quit using moisturizers packaged as lip balm because they're pricy and many don't work. I was just putting plain solid shea butter, cocoa butter, coconut oil, etc. in little pots and using those. But then my brother gave me this Evan Healy lip balm (check Whole Foods and local natural foods stores if you don't want to pay shipping), and WOW does it ever work. It feels super luxurious, smooth but not greasy, and using it two or three times a day my lips are less chapped than they've ever been in winter (and I ski and snowshoe, and I have a cold right now).

I think timing is also critical with lip moisturizers. I try to apply the same way I do other moisturizers: after a shower, after washing my face, and before and after sun/wind exposure.

I use Cerave PM also! LOL! If I wake up in the middle of the night because I'm thirsty and during the day, I have been using a lip balm stick from Eco Lips. I think it was a sample from the local natural foods store, so I will definitely get another when this runs out because it's the best I've ever used. The ingredients list is: Organic Sunflower Oil, Organic Beeswax, Organic Coconut Oil, Vitamin E, Organic Rosemary Extract, Organic Calendula.

I really dislike petroleum jelly-based balms for daily use but they seem to work like a charm when my lips are really chapped. I'll apply regularly for a few days and the switch back to my regular balm.
