Lyn - too funny and great story. Just proving that sometimes the best gifts we get are the ones we give ourselves!! Very instructive (esp in the fine art of matrimonial manipulation - or as your mom might say, "that's just like a man!!)

Karie - secret santa is alway difficult. What about dried fruits? perhaps a healthy cookbook? A set of vinegars? or several people suggested teas and coffees. It's tough when you don't know the person well but I am sure you will choose something wonderful!!
Angie - I never met a tradition I didn't like! I must make a note not to tell my son about the clogs. He's made a pitch to celebrate all holiday that are associated with gift giving. He feels since the world has become such a small place this will help him understand different cultures!!! Does he know how to work the system or what!!
Pastrygirl - I also love that stuff. Do you remember in the movie, "You've got Mail" when Tom Hank's character wanted to give Meg Ryan's character a bouquet of freshy sharpened pencil? Did you just want to swoon!!
La Belle - yes so exciting all those little goodies that we try and resist the lure of. So much fun to get to sample them at last. The pantyhose were also a really good idea. I guess we should add tights to that too. Great ideas!!

Just a funny story - but one year, my dad really wanted a keyboard and mouse set. My mom told him he was NOT allowed to buy it (we had a working keyboard and mouse), so he snuck out one day after work and bought it!

On Christmas Eve, he strung up his own stocking and put the keyboard and mouse in it - and told my mom "OH LOOK, WHAT SANTA BROUGHT ME THIS YEAR IS JUST WHAT I ALWAYS WANTED." and she couldn't say anything in front of us, kids.

It took me years to figure out what my dad did - but he still thinks he was SO clever.

It is so silly... but I LOVE the thrill of getting cheap makeup - lip glosses in particular. My sister and I used to give and get those Bonne Bell flavored lipglosses (more like chapsticks). Eventually it 'grew up' into nicer lipglosses - but always stuff you would get at the drugstore. Maybelline, Cover Girl, etc.

And silly as this sounds - one year someone (mom or sister or former MIL) wrapped up 3 or 4 packages of nude and pantyhose - sheer stuff, not very expensive, but still quite nice. I think it was Hanes. It was such a useful gift, and I always love hosiery. It was very nice to have several weeks of getting dressed in the morning, and not having to scramble for a pair of hose that didn't have runs or snags

Growing up, we always received office supplies, like pens, post-its, and those small spiral pads. Even when I was < 10 years old! I loved it. (I think I've just figured out the root of my office supply addiction.)

Now that I have kids, I found out that I'm supposed to put Santa gifts in there. It's very strange to me!

Gryffin, I grew up Dutch but in a British Colony (HK). So we had Sinterklaas on the 5th Dec (left a clog outside your room door and hoped it was filled with a goodie the next day) and did Xmas on Xmas Eve (the Euro way). A tree with presents but no stocking. Also my Mum made sure the kids knew that Father Christmas was fake from the get go. That's just how she rolled - rightly or wrongly. Now, Greg and I have Xmas with a tree and presents, but no stockings. That said, stockings look adorable and I hope yours are filled with lots of fabness. xo

This may be a bit nerdy. Boxed desk calendars, the page a day type. They have every subject. I gave my late Dad a "left hand" one one year, giving my DH Peanuts, hi s fave comics this year, I received a handbag one last year, MIL cats one year, etc.

Such a timely post! I am struggling with what to get for the person I am "Secret Santa" to at work. The Trader Joe's stuff all sounds wonderful, but everything on my person's wish list starts with "Smartfood" so I think they are on a diet.

E - memory sticks - they are always getting lost. What a terrific idea!! The nylon shopping bags and books great ideas too. Many thanks!!
Amy K - I tried to google klompen and it just says clogs. Is that where the dutch put out clogs instead of stocking for st nick to get presents? I am out of the secret santa loop too. So I hope someone will chime in to answer your question!
Aquamarine - what a delightful tradition!! Chocolate oranges would be lovely!! I am a huge bookworm too. All my dogs are named for my favorite literary characters (I'm talking to you Jane Austen!) and, of course, I do have the Anne of Green Gables cookbook - although I never made anything from it!!
ManidipaM - gosh girl you read my mind. I was just bemoaning my reynauds!! You can't salt the driveway in gloves and I refuse to go out there again. Lyn also recommended earmuffs and I just ordered a bunch. I did gloves last year, but as you say can you have too many. I love the idea of playlists and personal gift certificates. Great idea. Suds are a great idea I could go with a boiling hot bath to soak my hands right now!! Also thanks for chiming in on Amy K's question!!
Sarah A - nice one on socks the especially the luxury thorlo or coolmax type. Always hard to drop cash on them and it would be a great gift!!

I love E's used books idea best for my own stocking. You can't ever have too many in my world!

I also seem always short on and delighted over hats, mitts/gloves and socks because I run cold and hv Raynaud's. The year I got ear muffs i was jubilant! My hands, feet and lips always appreciate little tubes and pots and chunks of buttery things. And I adore sweet or spicy treats, bath supplies and practical little tools like sweater shavers, lint rollers, razor refills, hair accessories, bookmarks, letter openers, trinket boxes (I adore containers!). One of the sweetest stuffers I ever got was a case of CDs recorded with my favourite artistes... not albums but sets of favourites mixed together in petsonalised playlists.

For giving, I have a reputation as a giver of suds. Soaps for big people and bubble wands and bubble baths for little ones :-p

Pretty push pins and magnetic notepads for those who plan their lives up a wall are favourites. Seed packets for those with gardens. Thimbles or new needles or bobbins or a packet of buttons or a few yards of trim for those who sew or crochet. Earphones for music lovers. Stress balls as a loving hint to the cranky puss in your life. Claim vouchers for time spent with you, a favourite treat, a massage, a chore exemption or chore done etc always go into family and close mates' stockings.

Another vote for Trader Joe's. Lots of fun food items. I always include really good dark chocolate...I consider it a health food staple! And if I find them, I include chocolate oranges as a nod to the Little House on the Prairie books...Laura and Mary used to receive an orange for Christmas, a real treat. Yes, I am a book nerd

Angie, what about klompen on St. Nicholas?

No stockings here, but I might join that practice late as an excuse to buy MaryK's green tea soap.

Speaking of $5 secret Santa, is there ever an "accessible" elf exchange at YLF? I joined YLF too late to sign up for the standard one, so I'm not sure how it works. But the threads I've seen make it sound less than feasible for those YLFers with lesser means or just different priorities.

Oh in addition to fair trade chocolate, one year my mom put in usb sticks, which was incredibly helpful! If anyone's a photographer, memory cards (the right size for their camera) are always nice. My mom usually adds a small gift card to a cafe too (my sister and I are in our mid 20s now but we still celebrate Christmas at home so my mom's always the stocking stuffer). Also, those re-usable nylon shopping bags that fold up very small would make a good stuffer. And books, if you know the person's a reader, especially used books which can be got for a song.

I always put a cool nail polish, gum, and some nice coffee in my mom's stocking. Then maybe some chocolate, fun stationary, or a cd I think she'll like. For my DH, I put in small vinyl toys, candies, cds, and card games.

My daughters are in their 20"s. They like the practical stuff- face wash, moisturizer, makeup remover cloths, lip balm, razors, make up, nail polish, hair stuff, etc. And they still love candy! But I was told no more post it notes; they have tons!

For my son in law, I did practical stuff too plus hot sauces instead of candy.

I like to get special snacks for stockings. Wrapped biscotti and fun teas for adults. Other things that I picked up for stockings this year are fingerless gloves, sweater shavers from Bed Bath and Beyond, heat resistant neon rubber spatula, and knit headbands that keep the ears warm. Dollar coins are fun. Once I received a much needed tire pressure gauge.

For kids, I often put school supplies like scissors, tape and markers in their stockings. The ones from the beginning of the school year are generally gone or lost by now, so the refresher is welcome (and cheap - since I just buy lots of extras at back-to-school time)

I always go for practical stocking stuffers as gifts: 3-pk K-cups and a 2 pk of Milano cookies (Target carries both of these), a pack of pens, a candy bar, a scent for the car, lip gloss, and razor blade refills.

Angie, you're missing out! Do you know what we're talking about but just haven't done it?

We haven't done stockings for years. But I would probably fill one with small body care items, nail polish, chocolates, cute magnets, cute stationery items, cool markers/pens, etc. Mom and Dad (whoops, I mean Santa) also used to put a couple of scratch-off lottery tickets in our stockings too. That was fun!
