Cos is like an upmarket Zara. Massimo is like brunello cucinelli for the masses.

Ditto thanks to @Shevia. Bookmarked for my next trip in August.

Thanks everyone. We are going soon!

Thanks for that detailed response Shevia. I will try to check out some of those. $25 Missoni sounds good I remember you mentioned the Buffalo Exchange in a previous post. Did I get that right? Worth a visit?

SarahD8, I will check out that blog.

Lisa, I haven’t been to the Whitney Museum. I will check that out too.

BJ1111. I will check out Massimo Dutti for sure. It’s a more up market Zara yes? We don’t have that here yet.

Knitting Gene, I plan to go to the Brooklyn museum. Maybe I could do some quick shopping while I’m over there

Well I am so glad you asked! Focusing on second hand, it really depends on the level of curation you are looking for - going from least to most:
Housing Works - various locations, I visited Crosby near Houston (Soho area), the E23rd Street and the W17th street locations. I find these to be the cream of the charity shop crop, and a good cause. I didn't buy anything but saw a number of interesting items (Marc Jacobs, Everlane, Pucci (!))
Brooklyn Exchange - W 26th St near 6th Ave and E 11st St near 1st.
I found for myself Rag & Bone jeans, and Ulla Johnson blouse, M.Gemi loafers, and M Missoni long shorts all for around $25 each.
Beacon's Closet - W 13th St. I didn't buy anything but saw a lot of Rachel Comey in particular, which is unusual.
Tokio7 - E 7th near 1st Ave. They had a sign that they are closed for a week in July so check in advance. A mind boggling array of top tier designers including the whole spectrum from Issey Miyake, Yohji Yamamato, Commes des Garcon, Isabel Marant, Chloe, Prada, Marni, etc. Prices start around $60 and go way up, but there are bargains to be found.

I was mostly looking this year and focusing my shopping on makeup. If you are interested the Glossier Showroom on the border of Soho and Chinatown and a lot of fun. Broadway in Soho has become an open air mall of major brands, but if you don't have them locally it is fun. Lots of street style people watching too. I did not look for boutiques but they are still there somewhere.
Let me know if you have any other questions on one of my favorite topics! :)

Go to the Whitney Museum and shop in the Meatpacking District while you’re there. Dos Caminos has good margaritas. Or check out the Upper East Side boutiques and have lunch after you go to the Met.

My kid, who goes to university in Greenwich Village, says the best priced thrifting in the city is to be had in the East Village.

Massimo dutti is a European chain but fun—euro prep. Strictly window shopping is the georg Jensen store. Goodwill, the queen of op shops in the us, is opening a “curated” shop, I think in Brooklyn? Century 21, like tj maxx for designer duds.

Try to get a list of any sample sales happening. See racked.com or refinery29.com.

When are you going?

Such a great city to visit!

The best huge discount retailer is Century 21. https://www.c21stores.com/

It’s been 20 years since I lived there so I don’t have current info. I look forward to others’ suggestions. But based on recent visits, I’d do a yelp search in Cobble Hill and Carroll Gardens, on Smith and Court Streets in Brooklyn. That’s my old hood and I’ve found fun stores on visits back. You might also be forced to enjoy a slice of ricotta cheesecake or a cannoli as well. Sorry.

Have fun!

Hi all

I am going to NYC shortly for a holiday.

I have been before and am familiar with the big retailers but I wonder if others would like to share their favourites, especially:

*Any interesting smaller retailers that I may miss unless I go looking for them
*Sellers of vintage jewellery and vintage clothing
*Consignment stores (these are non-existent where I am)
*Discount retailers

Our itinerary is already jam packed with sights and museums, so I need to be organised if I am going to squeeze in some shopping :)

Thanks in advance!
