I love Charleston! Especially because that is where my husband and I were married. We stayed at Planter's Inn and were married in the courtyard. I do recommend their restaurant, Peninsula Grill.

I echo Carter on Market Pavilion. It's a great hotel. Their rooftop bar/pool area- especially if you can get a corner table with a view- is a wonderful spot for appetizers and drinks.

We were considering a return visit next month. I was leaning toward a place through VRBO, to be able to have a bit more space than a room provides, and there seemed to be a lot of nice options in great locations.

I'll second Anna's suggestion. Drayton Hall is amazing. Nearly untouched and the tour guides are very knowledgeable. It was a highlight of our trip.

Thanks all. I just booked Charleston Place for April. Hubster will be golfing and I will be touring the Festival of Homes & Gardens. As I searched for places to stay I was surprised to find that many places are already booked solid for this time slot. I originally thought I wanted a charming historical boutique hotel but most of what I found had brightly painted rooms and furniture that did not look comfortable. And for 8 nights sleeping and resting in a red, bright blue or lime green room just did not seem the relaxing vacation I want. The boutique hotels I looked at that did appeal were already booked.

If any more ideas come in I can always cancel. so keep them coming.

I stayed at the Doubletree 3 years ago with a friend and didn't particularly like it--it's just that we get Hilton points there. Didn't like the breakfast area or the breakfast. I think there must be better located hotels--it seems to me we had to walk several blocks to get to interesting places.I can't remember what the room was like--they all blend together in my brain.

The hotel did have a good concierge though--very helpful and useful.

I liked Charleston Place when we stayed there a couple of years ago. Good location and very pleasant staff. The hotel had a nice jazz bar and some nice shopping (my first and not the last time to shop White House Black Markwt.)

Two other nice choices right in the middle of everything
are:

Charleston Place: http://www.belmond.com/charleston-place/

Hilton Doubletree: http://doubletree3.hilton.com/.....index.html

These hotels and the Market Pavilion are all within 2 blocks of each other. You can't go wrong with any of them. They are walking distance to Waterfront Park, King Street shopping, the market, a multitude of great restaurants, and walking/carriage tours of downtown.

Hi Deb! It's been years since I've been to Charleston, but I recently researched hotels there for a possible upcoming anniversary trip. Although we ended up deciding on Quebec City, I bookmarked this boutique hotel for future reference. It's definitely a splurge, but the reviews all seem glowing. I like that it offers cooking classes, both to the public and guests. I can't get the link to paste for some reason, but it's called Zero George Street.

Happy Planning! I'll be watching this thread closely to see the recommendations of those more familiar with the city. I would still like to make it back to Charleston again sometime soon.

The Market Pavillion! http://www.marketpavilion.com/

It's right in the center of everything...next door to the market and surrounded by tons of shops, beautiful homes and restaurants within easy walking distance. Bicycle taxis are everywhere if you get loaded down with packages. The guest rooms are great. The staff is friendly. There's a pool and pool bar on top of the hotel that are fun when you just want to hang around.

Don't forget that visitors to Charleston are required to order Shrimp and Grits at least once;-)

My hubbie and I are considering a trip to Charleston next May and I would like suggestions on where to stay. He will be golfing most days so I will be left in town to do whatever I want but will need to take public transportation. Because of that I would like to stay in downtown Charleston or thereabouts. What say all of you travelers?
