Thanks, Beth Ann. I live in the Salt Lake area, around the mountains, but the desert is my favorite terrain on earth. (Plus the phrase "Utah desert" occurs in a Springsteen song.) I don't think I would wear these pants in Warsaw, Poland, which is the city I hang out in when I'm being professional and serious. But I can see wearing them when I'm playing tourist somewhere else.

I realized I'd put the wrong Calvin Klein cami in Finds--this is the drape neck, not the cowl neck, so that's corrected now. But the good thing about making this post is that I decided I like this top so much that I ordered the red and the light pink as well.

These are the days of great "athleisure" looks -- you wear this one really well. I'm gathering from your screen name that you live in a climate and locale that's conducive to hiking most of the year. Being able to shift seamlessly from touring to hiking is really valuable on a lot of vacations, too. Last year, my family went to Yellowstone and Grand Teton -- these looks would have perfect for Jackson Hole. Put on a blazer or topper, and it would work in most cities, too.

Great pants. I need a pair of hiking pants for spring and fall. Summer is too hot here for long pants. I will look for these.

Nice! I have a pair of gear pants from Athleta that function like this and they are very useful.

I'm always on the look out for hiking clothes ! I'm an avid hiker but really prefer shorts. Pants just seem to bind up on steep slopes. If I can't wear shorts then there's snow on the ground and I need snow shoes! But there is defentely a hole in the world of travel, comfortable, active/city clothes for women. My DH has all kinds of clothes that look great but I'm always struggling. Thanks for the recommendation.

In Seattle or Portland (home of Columbia sportswear) you would fit right in, other cities not so much.
Grommets on the calf are a giveaway.

Yes, these look like they will work well as part of a sporty lux look. I'm on the lookout for some new tech pants so I might need to try those pants myself.

Thanks so much, carter! The fitness comes from discovering that the university where I work provides very low-cost personal training. So I've been working out with an enthusiastic undergrad phys. ed. major twice a week--so much more effective than working out on my own or even with a class.

always trying, when I check online for these pants they're usually sold out. I bought mine at a Columbia outlet store. And so far the Jambu wedges are very comfortable, although I wish the straps were tighter. (The size is right, given how my foot fits on the sole, but it feels as if the straps barely touch my feet.)

unfrumped, yes, I can see a blazer with hiking pants in the evening.

I think so, especially for travel and packing light and touring countryside and then ending up in the city. . I took Eddie Bauer Travex pants on my Ireland trip for hiking in misty rainy weather and then wore a nicer top and knit blazer to go out. Of course everything was quite casual there. If I were spending several days in a real urban environ, I'd probably pack some " real" pants but still comfotable.

yep, great for double duty. A whole lot better than my hiking pants. They are old cargos with snaps and tabs on the legs for roll up. Those pants look super in # 1 and 2. I am going to have to check out my local sporting goods store. Columbia is a good brand of sporting wear. I have an old Columbia jacket that just keeps going and going.

Those are the coolest Jambu shoes I have ever seen..Are they as comfy as they look?

Or at least I like these better than any hiking pants I've ever owned. It may be just that they happen to fit my current shape very well, but when I first tried them on I kept looking at them in the dressing room mirror to make sure I wasn't seeing things. And then I went back and bought two more pairs a couple weeks later (another olive green and a black) just in case Columbia ever stops making them. They're City Slickerz Roll-Up Pant. They're the usual soft comfortable quick-dry technical fabric, comfortable enough to be pajamas. But I think they dress up well enough to work great on a trip where you're packing light and need them to do double duty.

Photos 1 and 2 are styled for city walking and going out. Photos 3 and 4, for a cool-weather hike. And photos 5 and 6 are for a desert hike--looking at those last two I think I'd choose a close-fitting technical t-shirt instead and probably sandals, that is, if I was concerned what the rattlesnakes thought of my look. Photographs are by my very tolerant daughter.

So what do you think? Can I get away with wearing these pants in the city? And what else should I do with these new Jambu Sugar wedges?
