I bought this hat at my favorite hat store in North America: Beau Chapeau, in Niagara-on-the-lake, Ontario. I did not realize (duh) that they sell online until I saw this thread and decided to google them.

This is a fantastic store and I can highly recommend the “Lauren” for curly hair. It is very well made and just sits on top of all my thick and curly hair. There is not a chin strap but if you wanted one you could have somebody sew a strip of elastic onto this wonderful hat.

We go the Shaw Festival every year and have purchased several hats at this store, both for me and my husband. Looks like this one comes in many colors, too. I did not realize that.

I was thinking about this thread today after a week of terrible hat hair (even though my current beanie is not ultra-tight). Is there a market niche waiting to be filled?... Slouchy beanies are sometimes too flimsy and not warm enough for me. So: a slouchy, non-constricting but warm and fashionable hat, in a variety of style options, for those avoiding hat hair (whether they are curly-haired or not). If only I were the entrepreneurial type...

I use a huge cashmere travel wrap as a scarf that also does double duty as a hat for when I need a hat but don’t want to wear one. It’s super light and adds minimal weight to my hair, compared with hats. Beanies can work, but I don’t find loose ones particularly warm.

If anyone spots a nice lightweight soft slouchy beret in teal, please let me know. I have a directive from Angie to find one, and she’s right, it would be perfect with my new black puffer.

This one is close but maybe a little too long/floppy.

I always use a large, warm scarf, wrapped over my head- keeps head and neck warm, without the “peripheral” vision issues! Hats and I do not get along well!

I like a slouchy knit beret like Janet suggests, not to tight around the band. Also I wear this Echo knit newsboy cap (in Finds), beret style, with the top pulled off to the side a bit. I like the brim, to keep snow or drizzle off my glasses. And I wear a men's wool blend newsboy cap (similar to the Find, but I have a different brand); it took me a while to find one that I liked. Be patient in looking for the right fit and silhouette with this one. These three styles do not flatten my hair beyond redemption. I can at least refluff it tolerably well after wearing them!

Slouchy berets with a loose band or floppy hats with brims. Not much else works for me since my hair won't spring back up (too thin) once a hat comes off. Some of mine attached.

Roxanna, yes, I definitely have the problem of no peripheral vision with my big jacket hood. No good solution here... I'm always holding the hood with one hand so I can be able to watch out for cars and bikes as I cross the street!

Pix of my kid in his hat coming soon.

ETA Here he is, in his newsboy hat in Cleveland, five years ago.

Headshops primarily sell equipment to use with pot, but a lot of them have some clothing and vinyl records. The hats are big so they can be worn with dreadlocks. They often have tams, cloches and other styles too. We don't use pot, and my son has never had dreads, but when his hair was long, it was big, and the hats worked.I picked them up and brought them home for him to try.

I really like knit/crocheted beanies with a lot of volume. I don't mind my hair getting blah under a tighter hat (see avatar--I love caps!), but my hair definitely loves beanies best. I don't like berets on me, but I enjoy them on others with long, curly hair.

This is so helpful. Janet, I like your cashmere beret suggestions and I will try those. Hoods don't work as well for me as they obscure my peripheral vision. I find my fuzzy earmuffs work great, but sometimes I need a full hat. I will try some of these suggestions.

Love this thread... I also have curly hair and live in a cold climate. Plus tight hats give me headaches. I haven't found the ideal one yet; I have a few loose ones but they are never warm enough. The cashmere ones suggested by Janet look like they might do the trick. Like Liz A. I rely a lot on hoods but not all my coats are hooded (why did Eddie Bauer make a hoodless puffer?!? And why did I buy it?!?)
Back in the day I had a puffy velvet beret that worked well, but that was over ten years ago...

If I want to keep my hair looking good, I just use my hood instead of a hat. Sometimes I can keep it looking ok with a loose fitting hat.

Yes, I have a hat like Janet describes, though mine is less of a beret and more of a classic knit hat shape. It's a loose, light cashmere that flops over like those photos and (in my opinion) looks chic.

I've posted before on the virtues of a slouchy beret — lightweight and with a little extra room in the crown, so they don’t flatten hair so much. Mine are winter workhorses. My favorite is Portolano cashmere one — the Find wont work on my phone, but I think this is the same as mine:

Hi ladies,
Another cold Canadian winter, another struggle with warm head coverings. I find that tuques of any kind smoosh my curls, and that seems to be all that's on the market. Any suggestions for non-hair crushing hats? I make do with a pair of fuzzy earmuffs and a couple of ancient berets, but would love some more options.
