Probably an odd gift to mention but a set of stainless steal pots and pans. I always wanted a set but had non stick because I learned how to cook myself. When I finally felt ready to own better pans and got them, it made me feel like I was finally a "real" cook.

What wonderful stories.

Mine is a small heart pendant with 2 daisy and my name in it, from my dad. My dad has always let someone else handle the gifts ( my mom and now me ). But one year when I was about 8 he got me and my sister these pendants with our names engraved. This was a HUGE deal because we had Portuguese names that you never saw anywhere. I still have the pendant and wear it some times. He has NO memory of it...LOL !

Such moving stories. It's been a joy to read them.

My best Christmas present ever was a surprise package from a literary magazine in which I'd published a piece. I'd won a prize for the best piece of nonfiction published that year -- and I hadn't even known that I'd been nominated. The letter (and cheque) arrived a few days before Christmas just as my family was sitting down to supper.

Just days before that, I'd learned that my book would be published.

Oh, there have been so many great gifts over the years, including the birth of my youngest child, my Christmas baby. However, one memory that stands out is the year Santa left sleigh track marks on our snow-covered roof on Christmas Eve. Of our 2-story house. We heard jingle bells, we dashed outside, saw the tracks and by the time we went inside again, my mom had put presents under the tree. My parents STILL haven't told me how they managed the sleigh marks, but it was awesome.

When my sister and I were about 7, around the time when the Santa thing starts getting a little shaky, my parents had their annual assemble-the-toys party on Christmas Eve. Our neighbour dressed up as Santa, and our parents woke us up and carried us downstairs. I still remember the dreamlike feeling, of seeing the tree all lit up, and Santa was there, and the presents under the tree. They gave us mini-chocolate chip cookies and sent us back to bed. I don't know HOW we fell asleep after all that excitement, but we didn't find out until years and years later who Santa was that night. It was pretty magical.

Such fun to read about everyone's special memories. While I don't have any memories of a particular gift, I do remember a particular Christmas. It was the first Christmas my husband and I lived away from our families, and Santa showed up at our door on Christmas Eve asking for directions. We were renting a house on a farm in the back of beyond and he was looking for another isolated farm house and had gotten lost. We gave him directions and he gave us candy canes. Really!

My aunt made me a ceramic miniature tea set one year. I still have it though several items are in pieces from being played with for years and years. Our parents were often busy with their small business, and that tea set got a LOT of use between my sister and I.

My aunt also made me a Barbie wardrobe one year. My parents couldn't really afford store-bought doll clothes so I'd make my own out of cut-up baby clothes (very roughly! I was probably 6). My aunt is/was an amazing seamstress and I remember opening it - she had pinned each item to a page and I kept flipping them to find each new treasure. I vividly remember a few items; there was a flannel nightgown, a lavender flowered max dress and a wedding dress.

we don't get around to presents anymore, which is probably good because i am a B-word to buy for. i'm too picky about things i really want and frankly, it is easier if i just buy it myself. i guess i am not really a romantic.

I think my best ever present will be this year when my one and only child comes home from college for the first time. She will have grown and changed in ways I probably can't imagine, and I will probably continue to nag and complain about her slovenly ways as I always have. But we will laugh and have fun together and she will roll her eyes at the weird stuff I bought like the chocolate cheddar cheese and the salted caramel chai from Trader Joe's, and she will covet my TJ Maxx bright blue suede booties and no, she won't be allowed to borrow them.

It is not a given that she will be back this summer since I know that it will be easier for her to find a job in the region of her college, so this winter holiday will be extra special.

Aw, there are some really sweet stories here! Makes mine seem so, well, frivolous. :-)

Surprisingly few mentions of clothing/accessories!

Manidipa, I'm sorry to hear about your friend. That is heartbreaking.

Shannon, what a wonderful story! The spirit of Christmas, wrapped up as a viable embryo.

Emily, on a related note: yesterday, we saw the trailer for the upcoming Star Trek movie. VERY excited. I was most impressed with the J.J. Abrams reboot of the franchise.

Two gifts stand out in my mind:
At age 15, my Mom bought me a pair of camel suede mid calf boots with faux shearling lining and stacked heels. I always wore a school uniform, but there were no rules on footwear, so I wore them all winter for several years and felt so stylish in them.

More recently, the treadmill my husband gave me about seven years ago has gotten more use than any other gift I've ever received.

OMG, Astrid, that's a gorgeous piece of furniture!

I kind of remember my sister's best present ever lol Maybe because I was old enough to value it by then. My mother made her a supermarket out of cardboard boxes. I can't remember much of it but I do know that she bought all sorts of plastic fruits to go along. So pretty!

Also, my aunt made her two daughters a rucksack some years ago. It was not a regular rucksack but something that was in vogue that year in Italy. Kids used it to watch TV in the living room or something and it had patterns on it. However, it was expensive so my aunt made the two of them at night. Beautiful as well!

And my favourite Christmas present... I don't remember! I'm sure it was some toy I was reaaaally excited about, or something my mom made for me, but I can't recall it. Pitty!

Mine was a childhood Christmas present. I think I was five, but I still remember it! We always exchange presents on Christmas Eve and that afternoon my mum took me ice skating. I thought it was a bit strange that my dad stayed at home, but I didn't wonder much. When we came home my mum wouldn't let me go to my room until it was time. And there it was, the "Spielturm" my dad had made himself. It had shelves for my toys, a ladder and a slide. And it was really high for a little girl, I felt like I was up in the clouds when I was on top of it. It was the best present ever. Especially because my parents were still students at the time and I had never gotten a really big present before.

It was handed down between us siblings, the picture here (without the slide) was made in my youngest brother's room.

I've had lots of great Christmas presents, but the one that stays in my mind was my husband's gift the first Christmas that we were spending alone because none of our family, for various reasons, was going to be with us that year. The thought of not having to do the "normal" preparations just seemed odd, and more than a bit lonely.

His gift was to arrange for the two of us to spend Christmas Eve to Boxing Day at the Chateau Lake Louise in a deluxe suite overlooking the lake. If anyone has been to the Chateau at Christmas, you'll know that the place is decorated to the hilt, both inside and out, for the holidays, with hot chocolate and treats laid out all day long. The lakeside setting is spectacular with lots of snow, twinkling lights, mountains, and ice sculptures. Lake Louise is beautiful in the summer, but really becomes quite magical in the winter.

We spent Christmas day on the ski hill with no crowds, beautiful blue skies, and Santa and the Christmas Angel handing candy canes to us every time we rode up the chairlifts. We skated on the lake under the stars, walked on the snow-covered trails, and dressed for dinner in the formal dining room both nights. Santa even made a visit to our rooms while we were out on Christmas Eve.

I think that what made it such a lovely time was the knowledge that, as a family, we were still all connected even if we couldn't be together over the holidays. As our children grow up, our families change, and our lives take new directions, my husband's Christmas present showed me that finding new ways to celebrate the holidays can be just as satisfying as hanging on to family traditions. His gift was a great way to learn that lesson.

Shannon, that is lovely.

Mine is a little more materialistic. One financially slim year, we opted for no gifts to each other but only the kids. Under the tree was a tiny box for me with a bracelet inside. My husband is not one for gifts or showy displays of affection, so this was really a surprise...then we had to explain to the wee kids why mummy was sobbing, but a nice memory

Easy question to answer - December 24, 1994 I found out I was pregnant with our one and only child after trying and hoping for a little over 7 years. Nothing will EVER come close to that gift!

It was music. Some of my favourite recordings, an eclectic assortment painstakingly recorded and beautifully wrapped, one year when the budget had been too tight for me to buy any music at all.

'Santa' was a former colleague and friend --- who, sadly, passed away from thalassaemia this year, leaving behind a young son.

What was your best Christmas present ever? Who was it from? And was it an item you can wear -- either clothing or a fashion accessory?

We were wrapping gifts last night, and reminiscing about Christmases past. The year our second child was born, my husband took me completely by surprise with a really beautiful diamond ring. At the time of our wedding, I thought diamonds were a frivolous waste of money, and said so. But then of course, several years later, I wished I'd let him buy me one, frivolous waste of money or no. But I felt silly, so I didn't say much about it.

I think what made it the best gift ever was that it was totally unexpected and unhoped-for, and yet my husband was sensitive enough to guess how much I wanted it.

All of my other favourite gifts have also been items that I can wear. Mostly shoes and boots, come to think of it, although my long leather coat is high on the list, too. I'm not sure what that says about me, haha.

How about you?
