Viva, these are the patent boots Suz mentioned. The heel height is great for me. I expected them to be kind of noisy on hard surfaces but they aren't. I love them but have to admit I don't walk through puddles or the like in them if I can help it. Relative to fit, I do have a thick ankle and they are on the snug side.

Susie, great tip! I found several pairs that I am thinking about now. I keep forgetting amazon!
Shiny: I hear you. I had a pair of nylon boots that were pointy toe, little heel, and fit my slim calves like no tomorrow. Super cheap from Macys but looked great, weighed nothing so were fab for travel, and were impervious to weather. Not very practical with the little heel though. But I loved and wore them to death. I will not forget to look in that direction either!

Years ago on a whim I bought a pair of Nine West tall boots on final clearance. They are past their date trend-wise but I am still wearing them and find them to be my most useful boots in my closet. The reason: they are synthetic pleather. All over. Including the soles, which are a wedge heel.

These boots are friggin' indestructible! They do not leak. I can stomp in puddles all day long. I can get road salt all over them and they wipe clean with a wet rag. Years of road salt abuse, and they show virtually no wear whatsoever. Caked on mud? No problem! The wedge heel also makes them very stable and easy to walk in, even in icy conditions.

I keep looking at them and thinking, "wow, this square toe is horribly out of date. I should find a replacement." I have tried rubber rain boots. Snow boots. None have performed as well as these boots. And so, they stay in my closet and I reach for them again and again, whenever the weather is rainy, muddy, icy, or snowy (which here in Boston is many months out of the year). As an added bonus, this strategy means I extend the life of my other leather & suede footwear.

Long story short: look for a boot that is synthetic pleather all over, including the sole and heel. Needn't be a "rain" or "snow" boot at all. Needn't cost a fortune either. (You'll still have to road-test to find out if the boot is leakproof.)

You might want to take a look at amazon for Aquatalias on sale. I got this one earlier this winter when they had an extra % off sale on boots. It's not the most fashionable style, but they work well for cold/wet weather.

I am loving my new this season Aquatalia Versus suede waterproof wedge booties. I was not looking for suede or weatherproof, but they were half price at the Rack, so I tried them on and brought them home (half a size up), mostly due to their incredible comfort. I have recently seen quite a few pairs at the Rack. Having worn them since early November, they are very warm and water-resistant, while accommodating a comfort insole as well as my skinny ankles. Sleek and simple.

Good luck!

Thanks Suz and Diana. Diana, you are probably right; I may have to go to midcalf. I can just picture that moment where the little puddle reveals itself to be a foot deep. Sigh. I'm going to check a couple of local stores who might have Aquitalia and Candienne on sale now, and then the Timberland outlet. I really hate spending fashion money on boring items, but I guess dry feet aren't so boring, are they? :)

Ah, I'm with Suz on this one. In serious snow (or even rain) I haven't found booties to be much use. I need a mid calf shaft at the lowest. With a shorter shaft I inevitably step in a big snow bank or deceptively deep puddle, and snow/rain goes in the top. And you get more snow in Maine than we do in Boston!

That said, on days when there's only a coating of snow (so no deep snow banks) my Docs have decent traction and seem waterproof. I used to have Timberlands that were good too. Mine were classic hikers (which I may get a new pair of for actual hiking) but they have more fashionable styles too.

You would think I would be able to help with this, but alas. Where I live, the idea of a weatherproof bootie (i.e. fashion shoe) is a bit of a joke -- there is no way I am wearing my booties outdoors in the winter we have been having!

Keep in mind that I typically move about on foot. We've had a lot of snow, ice, melting, slush, more ice, more snow -- it's disgusting out there. I actually ordered a pair of true snow boots at long last --- for years I had been "making do" with a pair of weatherproof crossover fashion/ winter tall boots from Clark's (a flat riding style) plus my gear hiking snow boots (which are short, like hiking boots) with the occasional day of fashion bootie wear when sidewalks were gloriously dry....and Blundstones for casual wear with jeans.

But this year? NO WAY.

My daughter appropriated my Blundstones. And they fit her better, anyway. My Clark's leak and the zipper is broken. My gear snow boots are fab for hiking but useless for walking around town (snow is deep and gets into them) and worse than useless for driving.

Even my fab La Canadienne weather proof tall boots only come out on special occasions. It's just too, too gross out there and I don't want to ruin them. Every day brings a fresh mess.

Ok. Rant over.

I WOULD consider La Canadienne or Aquatalia. Both are pricey, but you can find some styles at 6 pm. Pil got a fantastic pair of La Canadienne booties in patent earlier in the fall and they are weather proof.

If your needs are more casual, you could do what I also used to do and wear Blundstones. I wore this pretty much always in the yukky weather with my jeans in town. Ultimately I will probably get another, similar boot for mucking around yet looking "okay." Mine were the chisel toed model which looks a bit more refined.

I need to try to grab a pair of weatherproof booties with style while there are still some around. I've come to realize / remember that we've entered the worst time of year, weather-wise, in Maine: if it's warmish, there is mud everywhere. If it's cold, there will be snow, rain, sleet, or ice. This will last for the next four months. I don't want to live in my snow boots, and the booties I love and have been wearing non-stop (metallic Seychelles, Frye Philip Harness, Cole Haan suede heels, etc.) are just not built for weather.
Any recos for cute weatherproof booties I can wear with jeans and also trousers, for work and work travel? Ideally with a little heel -- 1-2 inch. I need some multi-purpose booties here.
Thanks!
