I agree Ele! Miley looks stupid in that dress. That dress is for an elegant, mature, and accomplished woman. In other words: not MIley Cyrus.

I'm stealing it from her. When she accomplishes something, she can have it back. Obviously, I won't be wearing it either, as I haven't accomplished much myself. But at least it will be in safe hands.

It bothers me that this dress even exists though. I can understand making cheap knockoffs but why would a legitimate designer completely steal another dress and sell it for thousands of dollars? Even the colors are the same. It's offensively similar.

Well, now I know what we'll be ranting and raving about while picking the fruit out of our scones. :)

Julie, you just got me thinking how funny it would be if our dress code was ballgowns and tuxedos. With tails, of course. I wonder if they dress any better over in the Costume Institute. The curatorial staff has to wear gloves and labcoats when handling the clothes (the gloves are for protection but the labcoats baffle me). But perhaps they wear cocktail attire underneath? Well, the project I'm working on is a girls' activity book, and I regularly think about having some of the MOTG's of YLF buying it for their daughters. You included!

Awesome, Maya! We can be haters together. I'll send you my Oscars thing this year- I really let my *itch out I love the dresses you linked to, especially that first one. Swoon. How do you feel about Eva Green's red carpet style? I love it because she always looks very eccentric, dramatic and slightly insane.

Bella, I remember that dress. I thought the neckline was really pretty on her, but hated everything else about it. If there's one thing I can't stand it's an actress who dresses "above her station". I know that sounds horrible and elitist of me, but seriously: a sparkly, princessy ballgown belongs on an actress who's nominated for (and likely going home with) a gong, not on MILY CYRUS. Geesh.

(That is another reason why I find Eva Longoria's red carpet style so offensive. She's always in these jewel-tone, trumpet-skirted gowns that draw so much attention to her, and I sometimes wish that someone would remind her that she's on Desperate Housewives. Just sayin'.)

Maya, do you remember that Miley Cyrus wore a ripoff of the last Dior gown at 2009 Oscars?
http://justjared.buzznet.com/2.....09-oscars/
well, I guess technically it is not a ripoff, it was a Zuhair Murhad gown but heavily inspired.

Ele, I'm glad I'm not the only one here with a vicious streak! When I saw Kristin Stewart i was asking myself when she would get over this angsty teenager phase and grow up. I'm tired of seeing her hideous hair and dour expression (see, I'm even more mean than you).

I liked Audrey T's dress but not crazy about the color. It's sweet though. I get bored of seeing long and elegant over and over again.

Today I was working on a project involving dresses from the Costume Institute and musing about what I would wear on the red carpet. I'm obviously shoving practicality and appropriateness aside when I chose these!

Angie, what a silly question. Of course I read your Oscars posts- I read all your posts!

Like you say, it all boils down to personal taste. I tend to prefer looks that push the fashion envelope a little, while still being elegant and flattering. Hate princessy gowns and glamourous, sexpot looks (ie. anything Eva Longoria would ever wear) but LOVE modern, shorter and carefree stuff. I love Kate Winslet, but she's usually no. 2 or 3 for me- never top as she just isn't "fashiony" enough. Cate Blanchett gets a bit closer.

Overall, no one stood out to me at the BAFTAS; it was disappointing compared to last year, style-wise. Looking forward to the Oscars, though!

Maya!!! I'm joking. Audrey Tatou can wear whatever she fancies. But she might have a legal suit thrown against her if she's under contract with Chanel.

Ele, I always do a Golden Globes and Oscars post – running into their 4th year. Do you ever read them? I love red carpet style.

I tend to judge red carpet style quite harshly though, much more harshly than any other form of style. I like sleek, classic, retro looks and abhor anything too poofy, modern or Grecian. Soooooooo, I’ve noticed that red carpet aesthetic opinions boil down to personal taste. For example, I love, and I mean LOVE Kate Winslet. Did not like her Oscar dress at all last year, whereas others thought it was one of the best gowns on the red carpet. Do not like Angelina Jolie, but I adored her Oscar gown last year, which was dubbed boring - but it was my favourite gown. There is no accounting for taste :0)

I actually quite like Audrey Tatou's dress - sure, it's different than the typical red carpet formal gown but I think it's fun and I love the color on her. I also like how she's accessorized with red. Anne-Marie Duff is smokin' in that red dress (and I'm just a little bit in love with her husband after seeing him in Becoming Jane).

Julie, I'm like you- I love paying attention to the red carpet. I tend to have very strong opinions, so I've always kept them off YLF before. In fact, since I was 19 or so, I've usually sent out an email (well, now it's evolved into a PDF with photos) to friends and family (anyone who's interested in celebrities) the day after the Oscars with all my thoughts. It's can be very, very blunt. Basically, I sometimes think that I should have started Go Fug Yourself

I'm with Maya on Audrey Tatou- she is divine, with oodles of style and charisma. (Much more, imo, than Carey Mulligan, who I think is completely overrated.) The only thing I didn't like about her dress was the colour- but then, I'm not a pink girl. Maybe if it had been a brighter pink.

Rute, I also loved Rebecca Hall's dress! Stunning and very flattering. I also liked Romola Garai- I like a short dress for awards shows, because I think it says "I don't take myself too seriously". I loved Bonnie's dress, but it would have suited her better in a different colour.

On the flip side, I hate anything that looks overly princessy or too 90's glamourpuss.
I thought Claire Danes and Vera Farmiga both looked like they were wearing sad noughties rejects. Also, couldn't Kristin Stewart have done something about her horrible hair, at least for one night?

Ooops- told you I was mean!

Maya, I don't really care much for celebrity style myself but I make a exception for the red carpet. I love red carpet dresses, especially when I consider I will probably never have the opportunity wear this type of gown.

Audrey Tautou will ONLY be in trouble if she is contracted to wear Chanel, a lot of actresses sign exclusivity contracts as part of their advertising package.

In order of how much I like:

My favorite: Well the site gave this one a miss but I love it. It's hard to tell from one photo whether the dress is draping properly. I mean, really! I just love everything about this. It is so glamorous. I'd definitely wear it. I am not familiar with this actress.
http://www.handbag.com/celebri.....87/gallery

I don't know who this is but I LOVE the "this looks like a see-through dress but it's not, really" dress!!!
http://www.handbag.com/celebri.....on/gallery

Ooooh - I liked Claire Danes' dress very muchly!
http://www.handbag.com/celebri.....es/gallery

Also loved Gabourey Sidibe
She has a figure that's hard to dress, and not because of her size so much as her shape. She's a very appley apple. I thought this dress worked wonders for creating a waistline. I know not everyone will agree but I liked that she's not just throwing on an empire waist dress.
http://www.handbag.com/celebri.....be/gallery

Carey Mulligan's outfit was really cool and interesting. It works for her, but I couldn't help but think when I saw her, My god! She's ill! Get her to the hospital and insert a feeding tube immediately because she's clearly malnourished. That neckline is not doing her too-thin shoulders and neck any favors.

Angie, I really heart Carey Mulligan's red carpet style, I also thought Bonnie Wright looked stunning (if a little mature) in Prada
http://www.fanpop.com/spots/bo.....bafta-2010
Audrey Tautou's dress looked like crumpled tissue paper IMO, ooo she's so naughty wearing Lanvin as the face of Chanel.

I watched the awards show on the BBC last night too! LOVED Carrey Mulligan's dress. She was my favourite of the evening - as was Uma Thurman and Colin Firth. How about you, Julie?

I can't believe the hurtlocker won best picture. We have just seen that movie - fabulous but crazy stuff.

I'm not sure if the event receives much press outside of the UK so I have linked to an article on the best and worst dressed
