I actually like the way my straight cut off denims work - they aren't tight in any way (I pretty much always buy a size up from what most would wear I think). Anyway, I cut them just above the knee and roll up but I have longish upper thighs.

ETA: The pic in the link looks perfect to me!

Yeah, I'l definitely start longer and go incrementally.

I think this is more or less what I'm going for:
https://www.pinterest.com/pin/62557882297125202/

And yeah--I'm planning on using looser jeans for this. Precisely why I think they'll get more wear as shorts than as pants.

I also kind of love this funky-fabric hem idea that's floating around pinterest: https://www.pinterest.com/pin/184999497170072740/

I worry less about what the "in" length is, and pay attention to where on my leg the most flattering length hits. But I don't have very nicely shaped legs, so I'm much more particular about this than many people. I have fat inner knees (I know, but it's true) so I tend to try for a length that does not emphasize that. Sometimes it means actually choosing a length slightly at or below the knee, or a few inches above. I would recommend starting with a cut below the knee so you can roll to various lengths and decide from there.

i think your first cut should be a bit below the knee, and then roll them up when you try them on. It's trial and error. I have a couple of rolled-up-to-above-the-knee denim shorts, but they are a bit baggy, like boyfriend shorts. The length is most versatile for me at over 50, but on others I do like them shorter too. It depends on how tight the jeans are on your legs, too. The wrong cut-off length could be too tight on your thighs. For me, that would be too hot in the summer.

Thinking about hacking some old jeans. Would like to go just above knee length but not sure if this will look ridiculous. What is the "in" length for cut-off jean shorts these days? I'd like shorter than a capri, longer than short-shorts, but the typical 5" inseam for shorts does me no favors. I'm thinking 7-10" might be my happy place. Thoughts?
