I love belts and have acquired quite a few over the years - a few of my belts are in Finds - but most are not because I generally buy them in small boutiques. I mainly buy leather belts and keep them for many years. I really like the look of a waisted belt on a dress and have bought dresses that have belts that came with the dress (two are in Finds).

I like waist definition, so I will wear belts with jeans, pants, dresses and even over jackets and coats.

Belts are not essential to my style, and mainly serve to hold up the back side of my trousers and jeans when I sit. They become more important with mid and low rises than my current collection of high rises. I edit my belt collection every season and seem to remove one or two without purchasing replacements. Currently, I am most unhappy with the type of buckles on my belts. Some of them have brass or gold metallic finishes and with my silver hair, I now prefer silver, mixed metal, or pewter finishes. I currently have 10 belts. I have three favorites which unsurprisingly are in my wardrobe neutrals (navy with a pewter/dark metal buckle, light grey (silver buckle), silver (silver buckle). I have one belt that has a mixed metal buckle and flips between a black leather side and a brown croc print side. The other belts are colorful or have statement details and work nicely for dressier outfits or when I want to use a belt as an accent or to coordinate with shoes (red (silver buckle), blush (brass buckle), animal print (brass buckle) and black with silver hardware). I have one wider belt in light teal with a pearl finish plastic buckle. I use it to belt sweaters or blazers.

I have not started my Spring wardrobe edit however, my silver leather belt, a long time favorite, is showing signs of wear, and if I can find a replacement I like, I would consider making a switch. It was the first purchase I made based on a YLF forum member recommendation, over 7 years ago! I may cull the animal print belt and may consider replacing the blush belt with another color.

@Angie Ooh that Boden belt looks like one of my HEWIs! Too bad that perfectly reddish orange leather belt with a gold circle buckle is now likely out of stock

@Suntiger So is your 'black belt' said right after 'martial arts' a double entendre?

Nice belts Suntiger - good luck with the additional ones.

Angie - I will watch your finds! I also prefer my belts with a mid rise (and need them more).

Suz -belts do turn up at unusual places sometimes (but I think maybe Canadian tire is not a car tyre shop?). You have to be patient - and then seize the moment!

On braided belts, I don’t wear the leather one that often, but nudge the strands over to create a new “hole” each time I wear it. I like that the size is infinitely variable. The fabric braided belt actually cheats a little; the ands of it are leather, with standard holes.

These 2 plus the one my quiver is on (and my martial arts belt ) but I do want a black belt and a chain belt. The leaf tooled one is really long- and I may use it for the quiver cause the belt that's on it is very worn.

I like belts too! But haven't worn them in ages regularly - and I uses to. I've kept them though. They don't take up space and I like them. No need to pass them on :)

I don't like belts as much with my high rise bottoms - and most are high rise.

Sal, like you, I'm looking for a blush and better white belt. AND light blue. but they must have gold hardware. Tall order! Patience.

I love belts, though I don't wear them as much as I used to, and like Brooklyn, I edited out some of mine that were for lower waisted pants, at least for now. Some of my faves from that period came from Canadian Tire of all places! I still have the leopard print one I got from there!

My favourite is from a thrift store -- cognac leather with "snake" patches and a silver buckle. It works on my waist and for mid-rise pants as well.

I used to have a metallic leather belt I loved but it wore out -- I would love to replace but have not found the right item.

And yes, Zaeobi, definitely have the same problem with woven belts!

I like belts but can no longer wear them. Most of my favorites came from Estate sales and have statement buckles. In the 80’s I wore bandanas often as belts. I also like obi belts. A belt that is too long and tucked around itself was the original asymmetrical look for me.

I have a lot of belts disintegrating at the bottom of my closet because I find them so uncomfortable. I only ever wear a couple, one of which Angie recommended from Nordstrom. An oxblood classic. The other I wear is a brown basic ‘cowboy’ belt.

PS - I used to have braided belts because of their versatile fit (could wear on hips or waist) but, after a while, I found they would start to sag at the most common hole

Here's the current collection in my closet*:
My most used belts are probably the Muji buckleless brown belt (so useful for trousers!) & the big gold buckle one next to it. Unfortunately that one's starting to peel since it's pleather - seriously debating moving its buckle to a real leather strap? ('twas a steal as discounted menswear, lol!) Both of those belts get a lot of use because they fit both my hips & waist. Plus, the 2 gold belts feel too dressy to wear during these pandemic times...
I don't use the fabric ones much outside of the dress/ jumpsuit/ trousers with which they came, since they're difficult to keep in place without belt loops!

While we're at it, does anyone have tips on how to store fabric belts? I currently hang my buckled ones on these little hangers (with extra hooks), but that only works if the buckles are big enough to hold them there...

---

Current HEWIs:
~ rusty orange leather belt
~ animal print leather belt (am debating tortoiseshell over leopard, since it looks more abstract/ less like an animal pattern...)
So glad circle buckles are currently trending!

*(Not pictured:
~ Khaki/ black reversible belt w/ circle buckle, for my hiking capsule wardrobe +
~ Red, black & yellow belts with curved gold buckles, for my UK capsule wardrobe.)

What a lovely collection Donna. Definitely belts are worthy of keeping as they last, and many of them don't date. What a good find getting back your old one from your Mum!!

I have a huge collection of belts, as befits a veteran thrifter. Although I have not found a great belt in a long time. In the old days they were literally a dime a dozen. Anyway, wearing them is another story, although once in a while I do. It is always on my list of goals though!

Tiny fraction of my collection. With higher waists and weight loss some of my belts are a little too big like the black one with the tiny studs. The animal patterned ones I wear the least. Actually, I have a few inherited from my mom that I haven't worn at all and are similar to ones I haven't worn in years: Obi fabric silk made with lots of velcro on the inside to be worn at the waist in a modified obi style. At some point I may own a waisted dressy style that needs a belt.

My favorite belt has a harness buckle and dates back to high school. It somehow ended up with my mom who I doubt ever wore it. But then I found it a decade or so ago and took it back. Quality belt over half a century old!

Interesting Donna - I agree high rise are better at staying up than mid-low rise pants. And interesting that you wear them out....

Style Fan - I agree that pants and dresses can call for different belts. I don't have my belts in finds either.

I have too many belts to photograph (maybe some day!). I wear them mostly for functional purposes; with my nonexistent booty my pants slide down in the back without a belt. Ultra high rise jeans mostly eliminate the problem. Belts are the single item of clothing that I am most likely to wear out.

I have lots of belts, collected over a lot of years. My green circle belt is maybe 25 years old. I still wear it frequently. It is designed to sit on the hips but my clever husband put some more studs on it so I can wear it on the waist too.

I think Trinny says don’t edit your belts? I have because otherwise I’d have too many, but I do it sparingly. Eg. I edited out most of my hip belts that worked with lower rise jeans. Partly because I’m not wearing lower rise jeans and partly because the belts were not that special. They could be replaced if I go back to low rise. But I keep belts that are in unusual colours or that have interesting design features. I have some nice waist belts with double buckle features. 2 teal belts. One maroon belt.

Sally, if you are on the lookout for belts Witchery has some nice ones lately.

ETA: here is a photo of my current favourites. The 2 narrower belts in the centre are current season Witchery (one is teal green, one is black). The others range from 3 to 25 years old. Some of my favourites are Veronica Maine and Cue. I think their belts are made by Peter Lang.

Synne, I love you dearly, but I’m not going to go put those outfits on beltless now. Here are a couple similar, sans belt. I hadn’t thought about it consciously but I think you’re right that the belts are usually a defiant little twist for me. That’s just how I roll.

Sal, I’m sorry. I didn’t mean you needed to solve all my troubles, or even that one!

PS Brooklyn mentioned belts worn low. I’ve never had one, but am quite tempted by the one in the last pic.

StagF - haha!! I wasn't much use was I? I especially like the belts with the white jeans here. Belts can look creative or functional or preppy or a bit punk or all sorts of things.

Great looks, Fash! Yes, your style is lovely RATE. But to my eye belts are still a nod to preppy and polish. In your cool examples worn more like in a defiant way, like the juxtaposition makes it rock'n'roll, if that makes sense. Regardless of how many studs or frills a belt may have, it's still a belt. Hehe.. Would be interesting to see the same looks styled beltless?

Synne, evidence that belts need not look polished. If I’m doing it, then it is by definition RATE.

Sal, I guess I’ll just keep checking every crafts shop I come across.

Thanks Carla, I like the belted blazer look too. And I can see that the straight lines suit you better on the trench.

StagF - I like the braided fabric belt - that's a great belt to wear with a simple outfit for some colour and definition. Maybe a cobbler, maybe a craft supplies shop, maybe Amazon?

Synne - I know what you mean and can feel similarly. I wonder if being Kibbe Naturals that a belt makes us feel too classic? I like them sometimes especially with a mid rise jean or pants, and I like tie belts in fabric too.

Great topic! I really like belts. They are key to lifting an outfit from just dressed - to styled. In theory at least. I have quite a few belts. But here comes the culprit: I don't ever wear them.

I have done some soul searching as to why. I have concluded that since belts (worn for aesthetic reasons) is considered classic and maybe polished, it's just not my style. There's also something about my proportions and body shape that makes me look all weird and skewed when I split my silhouette up in two parts with a belt, regardless of how low or high I wear a belt. That makes sense to me, don't know if it applies to anyone else, haha.

That was my thoughts on belts. Looking forward to seeing everyone's collections!

Oh, what was that nice young woman’s name? She was into belts and had great buckles. Jesse? I’m not sure that’s right, but anyway, I put most of my belts into finds for one of her posts. I also have these fabric belts (pix), a couple of webbed ones, and an aqua green one that used to have a faceted bead for the clasp; I don’t know where to get one the right size. It’s just a cheapie belt, but I really liked the effect of the fancy buckle, would like to find a replacement. Oh, and there’s this braided leather one too.
