Gigi, I'm super high waisted and I find belts really challenging, too.
Mary, that belt is to die for! Sometimes it's worth digging deep!

I usually need a belt, having a thicker waist and slimmer hips. But, when wearing casual shorts or a cargo style skirt for example, I feel a belt looks too “formal” and sometimes seems to spoil the proportions of the outfit (other times, no- one can see it!)I have thought of wearing a scarf as a belt but think it just is too much. Also tried looking for a webbing/ring belt style in a colour I like but no luck yet.

I don't very often wear belts, because I don't think they're all that flattering on me (I'm short waisted). I will sometimes wear one if I have a very minimal outfit on (to Angie's point), such as black booties, dark gray jeans, and dark gray turtleneck. Then I think a belt looks good to add some interest.

My husband advocates for the "belts if there are belt loops" rule, but only if he's wearing his shirt tucked in. He knows pretty much nothing about fashion; the only rules anyone ever taught him are "don't mix prints" and "put a belt in your belt loops" so he's very serious about those two. :D

I, on the other hand, tuck tops a lot more than DH does and never wear a belt.

I generally follow that rule. One of my first and super best purchases after joining YLF years ago was this studded belt and I still wear it multiple times a week with everything from shorts to dress pants. (It was something like $100 and it seemed insane to spend that much on a belt but I'm sure the cost per wear is pennies at this point!)

If that's a rule then I am a rule breaker I only wear a belt to hold up my pants and ignore the loops the rest of the time. My waist rarely shows so I guess it doesn't matter anyway.

When it comes to belts I am clearly clueless! I wear whatever seems best to my eye given the look of the outfit and for practicality (so trousers don’t fall) rather than adhering to any hard rule that belt loops mean belts must be used.

I wear belts 50% of the time - to Angie's point, I'll use them to add a little something to a minimal neutral outfit. I agree with Lisa that with a dress pant, it seems a little more essential that with jeans, which are a totally optional one ... unless, as Suz says, your pants are falling down!

I used to feel that I had to fill empty belt loops when I tuck and semi-tuck. I also used to wear belts a lot!

Now I don't because my style is more maximal and belts generally add too much of a good thing.

I like belts for a more minimal style.

I must have forgotten to hit submit. The idea that you must wear a belt in belt loops is probably an old rule like not wearing white after Labor Day. I remember hearing it from an SA when buying my first ever jeans (cords) in the mid 60’s. Girls wore them with an untucked sweatshirt worn inside out.
The “rule” is probably outdated, although a belt can add interest, especially shine and/or texture. It can change visually where your waist appears to be.

I think "dress" trousers or shorts which have belt loops look best with one, but denim ? Totally optional. I think belts are great and love the finished look they provide and only wish I had the body to wear them.

I love belts and wear them frequently. I've added 3 or 4 this year alone (I hadn't replaced belts in awhile). I actually need a belt to keep up all but my highest waisted of pants. Being short waisted, I prefer a mid rise pant, but almost always they need a belt. I do have some high rise - the Boden Hampshire wide leg Angie raves about (I've had mine for a couple seasons) and the Banana high rise wide leg, love both but have to take care styling because short waist. The Bodens don't have loops. I think the BR do, but I wouldn't wear a belt with either most likely. I purchased

I have always thought belts were optional and something that I fluctuate on wearing (especially with jeans) - I will have times when I am very much into wearing belts and other times where I much prefer being without. I would not wear a trench coat without its belt, even if left undone - so my response is if there are very visible belt loops (like a trench coat, belted blazer or dress) then I would wear with a belt, but many items such as jeans, skirts and dresses, for me it is optional.

I wouldn’t insist but when I was younger I felt I had to wear a belt if there were belt loops. It looked unfinished to me without. However I have barely tucked for about a decade so now I don’t mind. I hide any belt loops there might be, anyway. I also prefer elastic waist pants which I cover the top of as I don’t think they look very stylish. But for me, they’re so comfortable.
I am some of the way to what your friend thinks, but less so.

I think it's a matter of practicality (sometimes) -- as in, your pants might fall down without one. :)

And a matter of taste at other times.

I like the look of a belt with jeans, in particular, but feel less need for one and less aesthetic imperative with higher waisted jeans (or pants or skirts). Partly because I am short waisted. Yet I most often do wear a belt anyway...and then partly hide it by semi-tucking, blousing the top, etc.

I think if you wear necklaces, have long hair, or wear tops with a lot going on, a belt can be too much. But if you don't, and have short hair, like me, it can add pizzazz.

There are no rules though, except DYOT.

I haven't been wearing belts much lately.

Today I had a conversation with a friend, who insisted that if you wear pants or shorts that have belt loops, you ought to wear a belt.

I had never thought of it that way. I was just thinking, does that extra accessory add something to the overall look.
