I am tying a square knot, but I don't know how neat it looks. Maybe I'll have to take a picture.

I love the look of a real belt paired with a trench - though I always question just how practical that is, since it is probably even more slippery? And you'd be constantly buckling/unbuckling. But, if you want to experiment, I vote for an animal print. (Obviously a fake one). Leopard or zebra would look awesome!

Otherwise, what I have always done with belts like this is tie them in the back, not the front. That way, you never lose the belt because it remains permanently tied. You can just tie once and forget it. Also I like the look better because it doesn't add any extra bulk in the front around my midsection. Of course, it is not all that comfortable to sit with a bow digging into your back... but experiment. You may like that solution and learn to live with it.

can you not tack the belt to one of the belt loops? that will solve the losing the belt problem. And, if you tie the belt into a square knot, it will be much tidier looking.

A couple of thoughts. You could try a different belt--as long as the tones of black are compatible, it could work. I recently tried on a black wool coat that was designed to go with a leather belt, and the different shapes and textures looked good together.

I haven't done this, but I'm wondering how hard it would be to add a buckle and reinforced belt holes to a cloth belt. Doesn't seem like a difficult tailoring task for a pro--shouldn't be prohibitively expensive, either.

Maya, I can't help much with the belt suggestions but I do sympathize with the belt issue. My trench has a belt like that too and I wish I'd got a one with a buckle. I will read people's suggestions to you with interest.

I am intrigued by this idea for my black trench. This coat is not the one I have, but the material and length are similar, and more specifically, the belt is practically the same.

http://www.amazon.com/gp/produ.....lor_name=x

I love everything about it except that stupid belt. Obviously I cannot tie it in a perfect little bow like they show in the picture. Instead I end up tying it in a gigantic lumpy knot. Over time, this has caused to become wrinkeled, twisted, and kinked. It is also a very slippery belt and constantly slides out of the belt loops if I drape it on the back of my chair or carry it in my hands. It is really only a matter of time before I lose it (I almost did the other day). I would MUCH prefer a belt that buckles.

Sooo...if I wanted to swap the belt out, what should the new belt look like? I'm not going to be able to match the sateen of the coat perfectly. Will black patent look weird? I don't want it to be obvious that the belt and coat are unrelated.
