Well that was definitely worth the wait- it looks great on you! I stalk things, too. I hate paying full price and then finding out the item went on sale before I’d even received it.

haha, Jaime, what is your sister's address in the States so I can ship things there too! haha! You are definitely a patient shopper, not just for waiting to pick things up from the States, but hunting at consignment shops takes a lot of patience. I enjoy the "hunt", both retail and second hand, but my favourite consignment store is at the other end of the city.

Beautiful dress that was clearly meant to be. I am a patient stalker - I end up ordering things to my sister in the US to avoid shipping and import taxes and then wait for some time until I actually get them. I am also used to buying great coats and jackets second hand at the end of the season and waiting a very long time before I can wear them. But if I found the perfect item and it was liable to sell out? Well hats off to you !

Thanks SarahD8. Oooh, a coral sweater, that sounds lovely
for cold spring. Yes, excited anticipation can be part of the pleasure, for
sure!

haha! Carla, 7 years for a chunky cable knit non-barrel sweater! WOW that's commitment to find something! ! I'm glad
you found your HEWI. That's interesting about the winter coats in summer sales
and sleeveless shirts in February. Were they online or B&M? I found a ski
coat in July at B&M, but that was just luck!

Thanks Bijou! I can imagine you in white eyelet! As your warmer weather is coming for you, maybe we'll see a post!

Thanks rachylou! That is an interesting observation! In my BR clothes under the labels, it says the month and year, so for example, 6/19 to tell you which season it was from. I'm sure that is deliberate to put pressure on people to buy more "new" things.

Thanks Sisi. Yes, if the item comes along, it doesn't really matter if it's seasonal or not, especially if it's something one has been seeking for a while!

Yes, Janet, white dresses are very hard to find! Maybe the designers at COS are reading this! ;)

haha! Helena, I thought of that! Sometimes my daughter and I throw on our bathing suits in the living room, sit on floaties, and put a beach scene on the TV. I'll have to wear my new white dress to the "beach"!

Waving back to you, Angie! Yes, the sandals are very comfy. I guess with online shopping it's easier to shop off-season. I remember years ago, if you wanted something off-season, you either had to make do with what you already had, or wait! I lost a pair of mitts in March and couldn't replace them because Spring was here and all the winter things were out of stock and out of season!

cat2, great strategy! I need to plan ahead more often!

unfrumped, yes, there is always the risk of not being able to find what you need either for what you'd like, need, or sizing! The final sale items look so good, but I worry if I order them and they are damaged, that I can't return them!

Thanks Irina!

Sal, yes, I find I try on and return many things to find the right thing!

Jenni NZ, I, too, have visions of how things will look on me until I see them on me! haha! Thank you for the boost!

Great story! I’m not sure, having been an over-buyer in the past and broken the habit I am very cautious now on what I *think* I really want, because sometimes the vision hasn’t worked out. But yay for you who look gorgeous in this outfit!

Well done on the stalking and the patience! It was worth it!!

I don’t know I have ever been that patient with a specific piece. There have been things I have tried a couple of versions of and eventually found my one with returns and changing room try ons. My denim jacket and shirt both fit that category.

Rewards for patience and persistence.
So great when you have a vision that transcends seasonal shopping.
I have actually been doing more IN season shopping since I had previously found myself having end- of- season sales- goggles or buying “ classic “ items just because they were there, not because of a wardrobe hole. And finding my size or color might sell out during the season, and not trusting whether my shape or uncertain style preferences ( pandemic issues and fickle feet especially) would last a year until time to wear something.
But I’m trying to work more from a list of v wardrobe holes or outfit- makers that I think transcend trends- things I’ve gravitated to year after year - to watch for price drops. These are easier if I know the size already- something I may have tried on in- store or have something else from the brand ). I don’t like Final Sale, so that excludes some good bargain markdowns.

Great dress on you!

My summer white dress eludes me. Most are too short, too sheer, too girlie, too dressy, etc. I want something casual and a little on the avant garde side. If COS made my black zip-front dress in white, I’d be all over it.

Congrats on a HEWI found!

Compliments for your stalking skills! Glad that you finally found your ideal dress. Very pretty.
At the beginning of Summer I bought some Spring/Autumn shoes that I am wearing a lot these days and a woolen sweater that I plan to wear this Winter. I am so picky that when I find the right piece I pounce upon it, no matter the season. I think this is an excellent strategy.

The dress is fabulous. I don’t mind holding. I change out my closet with the seasons, which is the same thing really - just with previously worn clothing.

… just had the funniest thought… maybe sometimes people worry that a thing will be outdated by the time the appropriate season rolls around… and I’m wondering if that’s a hold over from
childhood because when you’re a child you will have literally outgrown the item…

I meant to add that I also love a good white dress in summer, and I also think certain essentials in classic styles (or styles that work brilliantly for you) can be excellent purchases, out of season. In fact, I often get sandals and sneakers at the end of season, ready for next year -- not the most stylish ones I might choose but the ones I need for walking. I've also bought sweaters and coats out of season, and probably other items as well.

I can attest to the fact that a great white summer dress is worth waiting for, having hunted for one for quite a while before finding ‘the one’. A chunky cable knit sweater was another HEWI that I looked for for 7 years before I found one that didn’t make me look like a barrel!

Generally I do buy in season, but I have purchased winter coats during summer sales 3 times in the past 10 years, and sleeveless cotton button downs purchased in February, but intended for summer wear.

Both pieces are fabulous on you! Yes, I can see this really is The One. Good job being patient!

I don’t mind shopping out of season if it’s an item I’m really confident about (repeat purchase or HEWI or the like). I just bought a sweater in a lovely shade of coral that will really come into its own in cold spring about 5 months from now. I’m happy to put it aside until then and consider the anticipation part of the pleasure!

That's a perfect dress on you! You did well to stalk and wait. I like the sandals, too. And there is nothing better than feeling fully prepared for the next season. So it worked out well in the end.

(Sympathizing here with the prices, duties, taxes, delivery times. This is why I rarely order from places in the US any more. I used to do it more often. I will still go with Bloomingdale's occasionally, if they have a good sale. I didn't know we could order from Sak's -- will have to consider.)

I'm. patient about some things but if it is an essential I sometimes settle for "good enough" which is almost never good enough in reality.

Post is a bit long...

I love a good white dress for summer. White dresses look fresh, airy, and cool in the summer heat. I have white dresses, but I felt like I settled when I bought them (Finds #1 and 2). The first looks too much like a nightshirt, a look that some can pull off, but not me. The second makes me look too busty and the hem is above my knee.

White dresses made of eyelet I find captivating. I like v-necks and shirting styles, midi flowing hems. <sigh> I was on the hunt for The One, then I found it! (Find #3) I online stalked this white cotton eyelet tea dress by Donna Karan for most of the summer and into the fall on Saks Off 5th (four months!). The price was too high, the exchange rate between the US and Canadian dollar was dismal, plus, I had to pay for shipping, duties and taxes. The dress wasn't available here. Macy's had it, but not in my size. Of course, I became obsessed. :)

Trolling the website nearly every day, dreading that my size would sell out when the prices dropped as the summer wore on. I got a scare when at one point I couldn't add it to my shopping bag and tried to tell myself that it wasn't meant to be, but it just turned out to be a technical glitch. Labour Day came, the kids went back to school, and people's minds turned to fall fashion. Then, October 7, the price dropped! I pounced and ordered it. It arrived October 14, too late for summer, after Canadian Thanksgiving, but I HAD the dress. It was mine!

Of course, I have to pair the dress with the Bella Vita sandals that were ordered May 16 through Amazon, but didn't arrive until August 22. :)

I don't mind too much that I wasn't able to wear my dress or sandals for the summer. I badly sprained my knee at the beginning of August and was hobbling around. I'm all set for next year! I will consign my other two dresses in the spring.

How patient are you about the items that you purchase for your wardrobe? Do you mind if you can't wear it right away? (I know someone else asked on the forum about obsessions, but I can't find their post.)

Thanks for reading!
