My #1 complaint is sliding down jeans!!! It is partly my body's fault and my unwillingness to do alterations. I am an hourglass so need a bigger size for my rear and thighs, but the jeans are almost always too loose in the waist (in the case of most jeans, that means at your high hip or belly button). Even with a belt, these pants slide down over the course of a day on my feet, they sit somewhere much lower on my hips so if I bend over you can see the plumbers butt. I do wear longer shirts tucked in so fortunately not too many customers have had to view this aspect of my anatomy. Still, the feeling of pants sliding down to plumber territory drives me bonkers. I thought that buying high-waisted jeans would solve the problem but it has not. The only instance where slip doesn't happen is if I tailor the jeans, buy them with a curved waistband or buy them in a smaller size.

So yeah, I have definitely thought about this!

Other than that, it's just being tired.

Glad to see this thread surfaced again; I thought of a response earlier but never posted it.

I often leave the house in the a.m. feeling confident about my outfit, but find my confidence evaporates throughout the day as I notice everyone around me who seem to be better dressed than I--more on trend, more expensive clothing, more polished hair and make up, better figure, etc. Sometimes I really can't assess whether the differences are real or imagined. My friend calls this "comparison mind" and reminds me how unhelpful it is. I do know without a doubt that, thanks to YLF, my outfits are consistently better than they were a year ago.

This happens to me ALL the time. I leave the house feeling fabulous only to return 10 hours later feeling "wrong." For me it usually means that I tried something new at the office and it came off as too casual or unprofessional. It could be that I wore tennis (didn't work), the "v" was too deep and I had to keep adjusting it (threw that shirt away), the top was too sheer (felt exposed), the colors were wrong (olive may not be my best color), etc.

There was always a reason. This is why I take a picture every morning and then in the evening give the outfit a "star" rating. If the outfit only rated a 3 starts, I don't repeat it or relegate it to casual. My goal is to only wear outfits that rated at least 4 stars and above.

Unfrumped, I feel you about the fabrication quality. I'm not a fan of sleeved tops in poor-quality polyester (though sleeveless are usually fine because they're breezier). I've occasionally bought such a top because I loved the aesthetic, but I always regret wearing them, especially on a hot day. In the morning I'm happy with the look, but by the end of the day I'm annoyed by the shirt because it's scratchy, doesn't breathe, or looks cheap. Sigh.

Shiny, those are all good points! I do read magazines and then later look in the mirror and have have that "oh...yeah" moment. But for me it is also something I would read in magazines and now I'm all of a sudden relating too. Women would say they had something done or some such ...I'm talking us kind of women, not celebrities...because they wanted the mirror to match how they felt on the inside. That they no longer looked like the self image they had.

I used to think they were kidding themselves but now I'm doing it! The feeling, not the treatments (yet). I feel like my self image is on how I was about 5 years ago...see, not ridiculous like thinking I'm 25 or anything! But the last 5 years were significant ones and every look in the mirror is a small shock.

My bathroom mirror is kinder than most for some reason, but probably the others are telling the truth.

I see you already have great company in this, but I will also join the group.
For me it depends on what kind of activities I will be doing during the day.
The 'what was I thinking' moments occur more in off-days when I let my boho side of the brain rule and flowy, baggy and whimsical rules. This usually means unflattering proportions for my body type, which I can deal in the morning with my fresh showered, clean shiny hair, but gets a bit dumpy by the end of the day.
On work days, is not so much 'what was I thinking' because I play it much safer but the high heels and tucked in shirt that felt fab in the morning do not feel so in the afternoon, because I am tired, clothes got not so tidy and my feet want to be free.

I agree, Mo, about fabrics wilting or bagging partway through the day. Once, years ago on a hot humid day, I had an attack of outfit insecurity while I was at work - even though I was wearing my very favorite outfit at that time.

I didn't understand why I felt that way, but during my lunch hour I went home and ironed my outfit, put it back on, and returned to work feeling much better.

I'm not a stickler for ironed clothes (in fact I rarely iron at all!) - but I guess it was just the wrinkled, limp, humid feeling that got to me that day.

My biggest reason will be that fabric looks wilted by day's end. Knees bag out or tops get wrinkled. Just less 'fresh' looking than when the day began.

This is a useful analysis. It sounds as if you've identified some key triggers for you.

I think this happens to all of us sometimes.

For me, it's usually caused by newer items not performing as well as I expect. So the fit reveals itself as "off" somehow during the first or second wearing. Or the item twists around, or otherwise creates the fuss factor. Ugh.

Una and Shiny, those are great points--that it's not the outfit or us, either, but it's the end-of-the-day blahs, or the overcritical voice, or both adding up.
I know I do feel more on track when I can pinpoint something actually identifiable like an item malfunction, which can be fixed or replaced, vs some vague dissatisfaction.

Peri - in my late 20s/early 30s, I went on a "diet" and purged all the full-length mirrors in my house. I also stopped all my subscriptions to fashion magazines, and stopped watching t.v.. I did this as an experiment because I started to suspect constant bombardment of images of gorgeous slim models was doing a number on my head and self esteem, and I had developed body dysmorphia and just couldn't see myself realistically. The mirror is back but I only read fashion mags at the hair dresser's, and I rarely if ever watch t.v.

I cannot tell you what an enormous & positive difference this has had on me. I actually found it easier to get into shape, to stick to healthy eating, and to lose weight and maintain that weight for years and years (lately not doing so hot on that but I have extraneous factors -- stress, travel with new job, perimenopause -- however I know that will gracefully fix itself if I don't over focus and keep thinking positively).

I also surround myself at home with lighting designed to flatter. Soft lighting, not too harsh, no overheads which cast unflattering shadows!

Maybe I am just fooling myself but I don't care -- my peace of mind is totally worth it. I just find that all those mirrors and harsh lighting and what not - have more power to CREATE body dysmporphia rather than the other way around. Our brains can play tricks on us, and our mood /hormones can alter what we see in the mirror, from one day to the next. Mirrors are prone to imperfect reflections. Photographs are 2D so not accurate either. I choose to stack the deck as positively as possible to combat all the cultural effects and images we're bombarded with everyday telling us we're not fit/slim/pretty/young/ etc enough....

Edit to add: this is why I *LOVE* this forum above all other fashion blogs: I get to see REAL women wearing real clothes.

I swear I posted here yesterday. No matter WHAT I'm wearing and how I feel in it, I want to be free of it by the end of the day. Unless I'm already in my pajamas. Often it's just that I need to switch into a different mode (lounging!), although all the usual culprits you and others have mentioned come into play as well.

The ruffled cardi outfit nearly sent me over the edge, though - I couldn't get it off me fast enough. That was a bit of an epiphany: I know myself well enough now that I should know better.

Good to know I'm not alone! And some of your ideas trigger other "me too" ideas myself.
Ambergreen, the "not me" does occur--sometimes is only "not work-me" and I love the outfit, but need to save for casual. Then I have done some ankle-pant experiments where I'm finding they're not bad, exactly, but I'm thinking I just don't want to go there, so much.
And rabbit--daylight colors, oh my! Things I thought went together....
And being double-crossed by shoes after oh, about 4 hours.

A lot of my difficulty has to do with my height. When I am at home, it is just me, so I can look fab in the mirror. But when I go out, I am among normal-sized people. I am not only short but very small boned, so I feel like I really get lost in the crowd. :(

Yes. Aside from fuss factor (scarves, I love ya, but I can't deal with wearing you for that many hours), and stretching out pants (corduroys, I learned my lesson). A big one is color.

I have a dull forest green top that looks just fine on gray misty days, often paired with a warm scarf. I tried wearing it on a hot sunny day over a black tube skirt.....horrible. Fine in my dim bedroom mirror, totally not happy making out and about in the sun. The same goes with certain navy pairings (unless they really do match under a full bright light) and some tonal looks that work wonderfully in the evening, but not during the day.

I with Shiny....I think my bathroom mirror is magic or something. I always leave the house feeling pretty decent (or why would I leave?) but any time I see myself out and about I get disappointed.

Shiny has a better attitude though. I always feel the mirror that makes me look bad is the one telling the true story. Hmmmm.

For me, it's generally the fuss factor or discomfort that will sour me on an outfit after wearing a while. But sometimes it's an easily fixable problem! For example, I recently wore a skirt whose waistband kept riding up too high, and the wide elastic was squishing my rib cage, so when I got home I replaced the elastic with a nice skinny one. Voila, problem solved!

The other thing that will turn me off an outfit is when I get cat called in it, in a way that specifically references the outfit being "sexy".

That's an awesome list and YES. Also.. "what Caro said".. (I should just add that in as my tagline, since I agree with her so often).

Two thoughts to add in here, which I didn't see mentioned yet:

Mirrors are different everywhere. I can look just fine in the at-home mirror but horrible at work/in the hotel mirror. I have learned to be forgiving to myself and ignore the mirrors that aren't compatible with the one I have at home. I choose to believe it's the more accurate one! :-D

Hormone fluctuations are a big "NOS" factor-- and make an enormous impact not just on how clothes fit (bloating), and how I feel (awesome vs tired and frumpy) but also on how we look to ourselves and others. This is science! You can google it and everything!! It kind of sucks but it does help me to realize why the same outfit I felt fab in -- and got compliments in-- at certain times in my cycle, did not work out and I felt horrible and frumpy all day during other times of my cycle. These are the outfits I do not immediately cull out of my wardrobe. I am now much more tuned in on this one, choosing "fade into woodwork" neutrals on certain days and "stand out/flashy metallic" on other days.

Cannot stand denim that sags too much. Drives me nuts. Ill fitting shoes - if I can't break them in or fix with socks - GONE. Riding up/static/fussy - I try first to fix with proper undergarments, etc, if not GONE. My tolerance for such things get lower and lower.

Yes! My biggest culprits are either general item behavior or (specifically) trousers that bag out over the day. So infuriating: I now wear a pair of trousers for a couple hours around the house before clipping any tags so I know if it's going to stretch, but I've still got some from before wising up that I love so much in theory I haven't parted with yet. If I have to 'fix' with an item all day, it usually ends up in my holding zone, because I know I won't wear it again. Life's too short to fuss with my clothes.

All the time!! I will watch this thread with interest to see how others relate.
In fact, it is the rare outfit that I feel smashing in straight to the end of the day. I definitely take note of those show-stopping days and try to recreate them with small changes.

Poorly made denim used to be the most frequent culprit for me - anything that can sag, stretch or bag will definitely not look sexy when evening comes.

Another thing that can do it is painful footwear or outfits that are weather inappropriate. If I'm sweating, freezing, or have super painful feet in the evening, I will also feel like I look terrible.

My last thought is that hair/makeup counts. If I ain't feeling my face when the day is done, all other components of my look will feel off as well.

I can relate to those of you that say that an outfit that feels disingenuous will sometimes trigger a "what was I thinking?" later on - but I feel like a few of those days are inevitable as we figure this all out, especially if we want to have fun with our look!

Oh my yes, very often! This used to hit me more back when I rushed to dress for work on cold, dark eastern US mornings. I didn't realize for a long time that I should test things beforehand...I don't even know how I got dressed. :P

The other thing that gets me is the one where something is actually pretty fab...but it doesn't feel like *me*. I know I'm not alone on that one. And then sometimes I want to stretch what does feel like me so I can branch out and stop wearing the same old, same old...but adding new pieces and silhouettes takes resources, and I try to work with what I have, and and and...fashion is hard. :)

Yes I know that feeling.
Common ones for me
- Shirts that will not stay tucked.
- Jeans that sag
- Dresses or shirts that ride up (I have a sway back)
- Unflattering. I catch a glance in a reflection or in a shop and realise that my legs look stumpy or the colour is hideous.

Usually it's the fussiness factor that gets me. Something always comes untucked, shows more leg or cleavage than I intended, especially when sitting down, shoes are more uncomfortable than I thought... All that stuff is hard to anticipate, so I don't give myself too much of a hard time for it.

Usually when I dress up a little, I end up having a go-go-go day unexpectedly and something isn't as comfortable as I wish it was. Makes it less likely for me to want to experiment in the future, to be frank.

You bet it happens but take it with a grain of salt because after putting the outfit through the paces for a whole day there is no way it can look as good as it looked in the morning.

Put me down for nearly all of the above too :)

Two things made a huge difference to me. The first was realising how I feel in my clothes is more important than how I look. The second was recording how I felt in an outfit after wearing it. I'm starting to really understand my "what was I thinking" triggers.

I know scrutiny improves performance in scientific areas & I'm beginning to understand how important it is in building a wardrobe I love & wear.
