In sandals, I often end up with too much space in front of my toes and then they're too easy to trip over. I did try a 9 in Bed Stu's first -- these are an 8.5 -- and the 9's just felt too long and too loose overall. The width was perfect in the front, but the rest of my foot was sliding all over the place. Wide widths very rarely work for me, except in boots or shoes that lace up, because the laces can help correct when there's extra volume in the heel/ankle/mid-foot.</p> <p>CarolS -- That's the world I dream of too! I often think it would be nice to go back to custom-fitted shoes. If each of us had a good cobbler building shoes around our particular feet, we wouldn't have these problems! There are some great small companies out there making beautiful foot-shaped footwear, but many of them are in Europe so returns can be prohibitively expensive if you're between sizes or not sure which size to try. Sandals are especially tricky because most styles are either very sporty or too dainty/slim-strapped for my style.&nbsp;</p> <p>JenniNZ -- There will almost certainly be folks who do wear sporty sandals (Tevas/Chacos) to my friends' weddings, as they're going to be casual, outdoor events (one at a lakeside state park, the other at an orchard). I have weddings coming up in June/July and I would like to not be stuck wearing my gear sandals (below), but I'm also pretty serious about not adding something so uncomfortable that I'll only wear them for events. My forefoot is over 4" at the widest point, which is pretty much double my heel width. There are very, very few sandals out there that stay on my feet, don't squeeze my toes, and have a wide enough footbed that my forefoot doesn't overhang. Anything with a contoured footbed, like Birks, doesn't interest me because I don't do arch support and the raised edges often end up pushing my toes inward. The Bed Stu last is actually wider than most I've tried, nearly flat, and pretty thin and flexible.
