I bought a Nyx "Can't Stop Won't Stop" foundation brush a month ago and it is wonderful! Vegan bristles and washes like a dream. This brush makes such a difference in ease of application and coverage - I was always Fingers McGee before.

I also have a couple of Sonia Kashuk eye liner and shadow brushes from Target, ages ago. Excellent quality but likely animal bristles.

I do recommend one of thse silicone brush cleaning mats. I don't use special soap (whatever hand soap is there), but the mat means you don't over work the bristles and still get the brush really clean.

Quick follow up- I picked up a Sonia Kashuk set at Big Red Box today. They feel really soft and not super pricy so we'll see!
ETA- used them this am and they're a joy to use Wish I could go back in time and tell my teenage self to prioritize nice brushes!

Thanks all- lots to check out! I decided I need to think of makeup like painting on a canvas. Too often it's "just another thing to do."
And rrr re: recipes! I don't care about your life story- ingredients, temp, time- I'll figure the rest out. I skip about the first 20 pages of nonfiction books for the same reason. "This is why you need this info"...If I wasn't interested I wouldn't have borrowed it bro!

Will check the paint brushes at Michaels. Ug I know, based on their beads, but there's no proper art supply store anywhere within an hour I can think of. Definitely prefer to do this in person!

Best ones are Japanese made

https://cooljp.co/article/japa.....es-cj-6538

Whilst many are animal hair, there are now many vegan ones available too.

I know la bouche rouge (French luxury brand) sell ones made in Japan that are vegan.

Can’t help you with the brushes, but on the videos, I feel your pain! Quick shots to demonstrate a technique that’s being described work for me, but I’d like the main presentation in writing. And a link to skip the crap & go straight to the recipe, svp.

Ok, hear me out - Wet and Wild’s blush brush is quite good. Super inexpensive too. Eco tools, Elf, and IT for Ulta, as well as Sephora’s store brand are all ones I’ve bought and liked. Some of my more ‘experienced’ brushes are from Mac and Bare Escentuals.

Yep - cream foundations , bronzers etc go on better with a brush . Those brushes are denser and more compact and have flat heads .

My favorite makeup brushes all came from art supply stores. Not a ton of money and serve the same purpose.

BONUS: more variety of handle lengths and widths ;)

PS - they are all at least a decade or two old and still in great condition.

Leave no retail stone unturned!!

Most of my current brushes are MAC. For low cost but good quality, I like ELF. In a pinch a few years ago, I bought a brush by makeup artist Sonia Kashuk at Target and was amazed by how nice it was. I don’t know if Target still sells the line, but I wouldn’t hesitate to buy from it again.

My best brushes were the most pricey, bought from Christian Dior back in the early 80s when I flung $$ around like a drunken sailor on shore leave. And it wasn’t because I made a lot of money either. Ah, careless youth. Fun times, though!

At least I was smart enough to take good care of those brushes. I still have them all too, and they are going strong.

Thanks all! I never had a full big set, so really haven't explored what would work best for different things. I'm thinking of popping into Ulta to try to compare different brands.

A couple of mine are Elf, the wood is chipping off on one though. I like the idea of bamboo handles, one of mine has that.

The worst brush I had was a kabuki that came apart when I washed it Plus it was hard to get clean. That's why my arsenal doesn't have one ATM.

And shoot, creams need different brushes too? I always apply them by hand.

Oh - yes to MAC too . MVP’s? A mac domed small eye shadow brush ( not sure exactly what it’s called ) and the BB standard blush and powder brushes - which I use for blush and bronzer . As I move more toward cream makeup though , I’m accumulating the brushes necessary to work with those formations .

I also have invested in good-quality brushes over the years. Most of them are not vegan, and I bought most of them over 20 years ago. I wash them carefully, and they have held up beautifully.
I have a couple from Laura Mercier, but most of them are from MAC. I also have some from Smashbox, but they are not my favourite.
I never wear foundation or anything for my complexion. My skin is too sensitive. I wear eye make-up, blush and lipstick.
For eye make-up, I have a brush for applying shadow to the lid, a brush for contouring, a brush for crease, a brush for blending and a brush for eyeliner. I also have small brushes for smudging. It sounds like a lot, but somehow I ended up with these. I am not an artist by a long shot.
I have two blush brushes. Who knows why?

I invested in the best quality brushes I could afford many years ago, and they have served me well for at least 20 years . Not kidding. Mine are most definitely NOT vegan, as that wasn't an option back then. My collection is from Bobbi Brown, primarily. Newer ones are from Sephora's own line, and one or two from Jane Iredale. I don't go near the drugstore options - they just don't do the job.

I started reading a book called The Makeup of a Confident Woman- and it's been eye opening (pardon the pun).
It's probably old but it popped up on Hoopla. I know there are a bajillion You Tube videos too, but I just don't have the patience. At least books you can skip to the point!
Anyway, one thing I saw was she uses a flat brush for eyeliner, whereas I've used an angled brush. I really have a hard time getting liner right by the lashes, so worth a try.
Did a quick search on Big Warehouse, and there are Tons. And Tons of sets. Like sets of 18 brushes +.
Below is the Big Box hodgepodge I use, but my bigger brushes just aren't all that soft now. I wash weekly but maybe due a replacement. Now I don't hesitate to spend on good tools at the hardware store, why should beauty tools be different?
I use brushes for mineral foundation, blush/bronzer, 2 shades of shadow, liner/brows, and lipstick.
Recommendations of what to look for, as a set or separately? I definitely want vegan brushes. My goal is to have the right tools to make the process as efficient as possible!

ETA-got some-find added :)
