I use the Monistat chaffing gel under my breasts and it is great. Tried it once as a primer and you only need the tiniest amount, but I like my Neutrogena primer better for me. I got the Monistat through drugstore.com.

Benzocaine is a numbing agent, so I would not try that ointment on your face, Karin. It might work well for hives or insect bites!

Great ideas! I was particularly intrigued by the Monistat-thingy. However, I live in Sweden, and I'm not sure if we have an equivalent product here... But, my dad just spent a weekend in the UK, and after a quick google search I found their equivalent: Lanacane Anti Chafing Gel https://m.boots.com/h5/cat_hub.....Country=uk.

I sent him the link and a picture, but unfortunately he couldn't see the pic, and ended up buying another Lanacane product... Lanacane creme (see the pics). Very sweet of him to try, but I don't think I can use this one... The main ingredient in this one is Benzocaine, and that's not even in neither the Anti Chafing Gel or the Monistat one... It does say on this one that it "forms a protective film", and I understand that the other two does something similar... But I guess this one won't work... Do you have any thoughts and recommendations on this? Could it be worth trying, or should I just try and find a Swedish counterpart?

Hoping you'll be able to help!

There are also lots of less harsh options for shampoo like bars, organic, sulfate free, conditioning cleansers like Wen etc, but if you use a lot of hairspray like I do, most of those don't get all the product out and are expensive in my book. But those are some additional options.

Anne - you bet your buttons I do! Greasy scalp after a couple of days is pretty common, and is a product of the shampoo industry if you ask me. Washing your hair daily wasn't common practice until Proctor and Gamble invented shampoo, which wasn't nearly so long ago as you might think. Shampoos actually have fairly harsh detergents in them, which as you can imagine strips your scalp of its natural oils, thereby stimulating over production of said oils (I think it's the same sebum as on other parts of your body, but don't quote me on that). Getting your scalp to calm down can take a while. For the first couple weeks, I'd recommend using some dry shampoo on the second or third day to extend your wash as long as possible. If your hair is light colored, you can use plain cornstarch or cornstarch based baby powder. It works well if you put it in the night before, then it soaks up the excess oils and is invisible the next morning, whereas sometimes if you apply it the day of, you might see the power a bit. If you have darker hair, you can mix the powder with cinnamon cocoa, tumeric or even bronzer or powered eye shadow. If you absolutely can't stand the greasy look, try pulling your hair back into a tight bun or pony tail. This process can be harder for those with short hair, as you'll have less options for camouflaging the oiliness. Eventually, your scalp will start to produce less oils and you can go longer in between washes :)

Gennifyr - that is so fascinating!! That might explain why I did end up with some dandruff, and started using head and shoulders once a week or every couple of weeks. I thought the coconut oil would be super moisturizing to my scalp too! Which I still think it is, but I didn't realize it had those cleansing properties as well. I'll probably just be a bit more sparing with it on my scalp from now on. Thanks for sharing that info!

I switched to shampoo bars and oil based conditioner once a week after years of no pooing. My hair has never been better.

Just a note that coconut oil can cause dandruff in some people. It's a high cleansing oil which is why it's used in soapmaking.

Thank you for sharing these tips, trekkie. It's always good to have a refresher course. I used to use lipstick as blush, and will probably start that again when my present product runs out. You're right: lipstick offers far more shade options, and it's also handy as a double-duty item when away from home.

I had to laugh at your mention of coconut oil as a conditioner; my DH swears by it, but he has so little hair!

Thanks for the great tips. I am a devoted Smashbox primer fan. I have heard of the Monistat sub but not tried it. I don't wear foundation but occasionally wear a tinted moisturiser (Smashbox used to make a great one but discontinued it). I find the primer makes my skin feel so nice all by itself. My skin is so sensitive that I have to be very careful about what I put on it.

I have not tried the coconut oil conditioner. I think I will. I only wash my hair every 3 or 4 days. I did use a deep conditioner once a week but haven't for years. Time to start.

Tr3kkie thanks for such a great rec! I'll have to give that Lorac primer a whirl!

Oh but I do know! Ugly duckling here. I used to need a LOT of foundation coverage: I had horrific cystic acne in high school. (We won't even discuss my hyper curly hair or obesity.) It was so bad I wanted my parents to put me on accutane. I still get an occasional cyst especially if I get slack with my skincare--still use salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide daily to keep things from returning. I had a pretty bad breakout back couple months ago. But it's finally healing up and skin is almost back to normal.

And now that I'm clear I notice I have some forehead lines. So unfair haha!

For eye bags. I've never tried it though. I've used Retin-A in the past for acne, and that seemed to wipe out wrinkles like nothing else, but it's prescription.

My eyeliner/mascara isn't melting so much as resettling/transferring. I really don't like a heavily made up look in daylight, so it's minimal and I use a soft line anyways, but the only way to avoid it I've found is not to wear anything on my eyes -- and I like a little definition there. Maybe I need a primer just on my upper lid. I used to have an eyeliner that you added water to and painted on with a brush in a medium brown, and that actually worked the best (better than any marker or liquid liner I've tried today), but I think it was vintage.

Hemorrhoid cream for sagging eyes or for primer? I've read that the ingredient that used to be effective on skin isn't there anymore, not sure how true that is. I can say I've tried it for wrinkles, it just felt greasy and I hated it!

Makeup melting is another issue though. I'll have to think on it... If that happens to me, which it sometimes does, I just wipe and go. Not sure how bad yours is though...

Thanks for sharing your tips! I occasionally use Smashbox primer, but what I use as a moisturizer (NoAd sunscreen spf 15 or above -- very inexpensive) seems to have the same effect in setting my makeup for the full day -- and I don't 'feel' it on the surface. I use concealer in specific areas and a very very light dusting of a form of powder. I found the trick for me to never getting oily shine is to not put anything (powder, concealer) on my nose (the sunscreen is fine though). I also don't wear foundation, because I feel like if I put it on my skin compensates by becoming oily -- and I really only need coverage in a few places.

My main issue is under my eyes. Have you ever tried the hemorrhoid cream trick? I've been afraid to, lol. I use concealer and I also use waterproof mascara, and liner above the upper lashes (that's pretty much it) but it still travels down under my eyes a bit by the end of the day.

Nice tips, Trekkiegirl, thanks for sharing. I'm with Deb on silicone, it gives me milia. I managed to find a Juice Beauty product that doesn't have it, and it has some tint so I can even use it alone or as a primer. I used coconut oil on my hair last night for the first time by chance (was making some body scrub and had extra oil left). I needed a hair treatment but the scent of the one from my salon triggers my migraines. The coconut oil turned out to do a WAY better job than the $50 vials from the salon. Now thanks to your post I know why. I'm hooked!

Keturah - I used to use Revlon Colorstay when my cystic acne was at its worst, the coverage was amazing (not that you need it for that reason!). If you like the full coverage look, have you tried any of the professional lines like Kryolan or Dermablend? For primer, maybe something like this would work.

Wonderful list!! I too have been using lipstick as blush lately. I love it!

I get lazy about doing my eyebrows. They get so thick, but I do have a couple of thin spots I should attend to.

I tried Monistat but it was too heavy for me. Still searching for a primer that doesn't break me out and helps my makeup last. My skin even melts through long-last foundations. Its not that I'm excessively oily (yes a bit oily, but not overly so). I just can't find a foundation that last longer than 4-6 hours. Even with powder. Except Revlon Colorstay. However the ingredients on it changed and it causes me breakouts now.

Monistat for priming. That's a mind bender. LOL I'm a Smashbox Light Primer devotee but at $50 (CDN) every 4 months it's spendy stuff. I might just give this a try.

That is fascinating. And a nice and compact guide to beauty tips and tricks. Now that I'm at home most of the time, and not bound to any work health and safety regulations (except at the bakery at the weekend), I should try to rev up the engine a bit and put on some makeup every day.

Or every two days. I'm lazy. I admit it.

Thank you Trekkiegirl for sharing this information! I must admit that first product kind of floored me and I had to click to see what on earth you could be using it for Brilliant advice!

thanks for the extra info. Right now I use neutrogena eye makeup remover to take off the eye stuff then I just wash with a bar of cetaphil. Afterwards I moisturize with La Roche Posay Toleraine for sensitive skin. I will look into the olive oil, as a matter of fact when I was cooking yesterday I noticed we were almost out
