Aahh fighting the school system for your child is a story I know well.... hence homeschooling my youngest on year 3 now! The homework stuff was the worst for me as well until I told them that I would help him study for tests and decide what homework was appropriate for our home life. I just got to a point where I felt that the school no longer got to decide what happened in my home. Not much they could say when he made honor roll the entrie time he was there.. I know seeing me fight for him helped to repair the damage the homework fiasco had caused.
You should be so proud of sticking to your gut in knowing your child and his needs! Great job, Mom!

I had to help my son get through an ADHD disorder in school. When my oldest son was in 3rd grade he started developing ADHD problems. He started failing some classes because he was getting so distracted and couldn't focus. Getting nightly homework done was grueling, took up to 6 hours & turned into a huge crying session for everyone. He could answer the homework questions but couldn't get the answers written down. I made appointments with the pediatrician, who sent us to the psychologist. The doctor determined he did have ADHD and prescribed medication and intervention with the school. The medication basically turned my son into an insomniac who didn't want to eat so we dropped that. The school did not agree with the ADHD diagnosis but one teacher rallied for us and helped us get a plan in place to modify the homework. I learned that you can get through a crisis together. You just start assembling a team of experts, learn everything you can, trust your gut when advice doesn't seem to work for you child, fight when needed, don't give up and you will get to a better place together.

I started running cross country and track in Jr. High, and just loved it, even though I had been told I wasn't built right to be a 'good' runner. There was always a time between the end of cross country (early November) and the start of track (May) When nothing happened, and there was no team training.

It was '77 at the height of the first running boom, and Runner's World magazine was all about the marathon. I found a book called 'How to Run the Perfect Marathon'. It was essentially a week by week training guide. I followed the plan for 6 months, and in April '78 at 17 years of age, ran a marathon.

This was a formative event in my life. I learned that I could do ANYTHING I set my mind to.

Such a brave thing to do and what an amazing growth experience. My sister took a job right after college in Germany and was there when the wall came down. Thanks for sharing!

The event was an accomplishment for me. At 20 I packed pots and pans, a few clothes and left the United States to live In South Korea for a year. This was 1974 and they had just opened South Korea for tourists 6 months before I arrived. I learned so much about myself during my year there. South Korea was considered a third world country then and the poverty shocked me. Here are a few pictures of my stay.
