Kari - if you are sensitive to silicones then a BB cream might not work for you.

Thanks for the link to the other blog - I do agree that the Muse blogger is pretty enthusiastic about many items she tries (I don't read it often but she does seem to try a lot of BB creams and Asian imports) so it's good to have an alternative.

I would suspect that in Seattle somewhere there is a large Korean grocery or cosmetic store - you might check that out and sample a few. The lady at Koreana market here gave me a ton of samples before I decided. Yelp might have ideas.

Interesting, and thanks for sharing your experiences and the links! I'll add these to my reading list. Like some of you, I have sensitive skin and I'm hesitant to buy something that's hyped up but that might make my skin *worse.*

Still, my mom's experience is encouraging, so I'll keep this one on my radar and will report back if I do actually end up using it.

yes. that is true. the Dr Jart BB Creams sold in Sephora are different from the ones sold in Asia because of the FDA restrictions

here you can find the differences between the Dr Jart BB Creams even though they have the same name but the formulation is different. For example in US, FDA doesn't authorize human oligopeptide or EGF in cosmetics, while the Asian versions have them.

Rae - It has more to do with FDA restrictions on certain components in these products. That is why is always wise to go through the list of active and inactive ingredients and do a little research before using, or test in a small area first.

For instance, I use a sunscreen by La Roche Posay that is formulated 100% differently for the US market , despite having the exact same name. I used to prefer the French formula, so I had to buy directly from there. My skin adapted to the US formula, so I no longer have to incur the expense.

Christieanne's link to Musings of a Muse is where I researched my BB cream as well - she says repeatedly in her reviews that the US BB creams are disappointing and more like tinted moisturizers, not giving the wide range of benefits that the Asian brands do (concealing, smoothing, anti-aging, etc.). Asian markets in general seem way more obsessed with perfect skin IMO, and their products reflect that.

I ordered one of the original Asian BB creams about a year ago--who wouldn't want SPF, moisturizer, tint, blemish fighting and anti-aging all in one tube?--but it was too light for me. I am rather medium toned anyway, and as I live part-time in Mexico, I tend to have color despite my fanatical application of sunscreen.

I just last week purchased the Garnier BB cream, as it has a medium/deep color that matches me exactly. It has SPF 15, tint (obviously, lol), and it seems to have some moisturizing capabilities. Not a true BB cream in that it doesn't fight blemishes or have anti-aging, which is supposedly the real benefit of a BB, but it saves me one step anyway.

Hasn't broken me out yet (I admit I have only used it a coup,e times), which sometimes happens despite being 49. So essentially it's a rather inexpensive tinted moisturizer with some SPF.

I have the one by Too Faced. I don't find it very different from a tinted moisturizer at all. Maybe a little less greasy. I added a serum to my night time routine at the same time I got the BB so I can't really say if it has improved my skin at all, but I doubt it.

I just got the Garnier one based on reviews in a magazine. I've only used it once so far as a moisturizer/spf/primer for my BE makeup. I also have a sample to try of Dr. Jart (from the Sephora SUn Safety kit). The Clinique shades were not right for me and I planned to try the Stila HD one next, but my makeup drawer overfloweth at the moment.

Interested to read this thread. I first heard of BB creams a couple of years ago on MakeupAlley and some makeup blogs. Before the Garnier one came out. At the time I chose not to pursue it, because there were barely any reviews of them and sourcing them would have taken some work too.

I'm also wary of something marketed as a "blemish balm". I have acne prone, slightly sensitive skin, and so many things marketed for blemishes actually aggravate or create them. I also do enough for my skin without requiring active ingredients in my foundation, and although a BB supposedly could replace those steps, messing with the skincare system I have in place is a potential minefield for me.

Chrisiteanne, I will have a look at Musing of a Muse's BB posts, but I'm skeptical of her reviews because she used to just say how much she liked a product without being critical or comprehensive. Perhaps she's improved.

ETA Beautypedia didn't have BB reviews then, but now has reviews of some Western ones. Essentially she regards them as I predicted: a hyped product that is basically a tinted moisturiser with thickening agents and in some cases, skincare ingredients, usually limited to a choice of 2 shades. Not having tried them myself I can't say whether I agree, but in most cases I find her advice is evidence based and sound.

Most of the North American versions don't have whiteners. The Garnier doesn't (which is why a lot of US users complain it isn't a true BB). Clinique makes one now as does Smashbox, Boscia and a few others. I have the Garnier version in light - it is pretty "glowy" compared to what I wanted but sometimes I want that. The dark shade is too dark for you I think (my mom has that - she is dark olive skin).

I bought an Asian import at the Korean market in Oakland - A.C. Care is the one I settled on with help from the nice counter lady. Any large Korean market with cosmetics will have them I think. Apparently a lot of imports are sold via amazon too.

I buy mine from Korea, and I love love love it. I searched a lot for one that doesn't bleach me. But once I found it I was hooked - I don't use any other allover product anymore - it is my spf, concealer, and foundation all in one. Mine actually goes on a bit light but oxidizes to match my skin tone. I definitely feel my pores look smaller and my face is calmer and happier with the BB cream than with the mineral makeup I used before (which was fine but provided less spf protection and sometimes made my eyes itch). I use Baviphat Magic Girls (oily version on forehead, moisturizing version elsewhere).

It is basically a tinted moisturizer with high SPF, at least that is my understanding. I haven't tried the creams from Korea, which are the "originals" but tried a Clinique BB cream recently at a makeup counter. Did not like it any better than other tinted moisturizers. I know a lot of people who like them because they are supposed to eliminate extra steps (moisturizer, SPF, tint all in one) but others say it dries out their skin.

I'd never heard of BB Cream before, but my mom mentioned it to me yesterday. In her words, she applies a light layer to her face; it goes on a bit dark but lightens as it dries. Then, she applies a very thin layer of her normal Bare Escentuals mineral foundation on top, and she's done. She said that it does a GREAT job of covering up blemishes, and after using the BB cream for a few weeks, her skin is less inflamed and her large pores are noticeably smaller (even I could see a difference.) She uses an inexpensive Garnier BB cream.

If, like me, you have no idea what I'm talking about, here's some background information.

From WIkipedia: "BB cream, also known as Blemish Balm, Blemish Base or Beblesh Balm (due to an apparent copyright on the word "Blemish"[1]), is a cosmetic item sold mainly in East and Southeast Asia, although larger beauty brands are increasingly introducing BB creams to Western markets as well. Originally formulated in Germany by dermatologist Dr. Christine Schrammek in the 1950s, the cream was initially used to protect skin after laser procedures and surgery, while also providing light coverage. Introduced to South Korea and Japan in the 1980s,BB cream has been named "the secret of Korean actresses" and has been heavily endorsed by Korean celebrities, which gained it large exposure in these Asian markets."
