I had two dresses essentially remade at this place:

http://www.yelp.com/biz/andrea.....-francisco

Both were hand-me-downs that required a fair amount of work to get them to fit properly. With one, I had to go back twice to get it right but I attribute that largely to the dress itself which featured difficult fabric and tons of seams.

I like that Andreas makes his own men's clothes too as that made me feel extra confident in his tailoring skills. But if you're just going in for a basic hem job, he might be overkill (and overpriced).

I had excellent luck with this place:

http://www.yelp.com/biz/san-fr.....-francisco

I had them tailor two or three suits, taking in the waist and seat of pants as well as hemming them and shortening the cuffs on the jackets, and also taking in a skirt I bought that was a size too big. No complaints.

And this guy hemmed my Hudsons (original hem):

http://www.yelp.com/biz/cameo-.....-francisco

With the second guy, I did take the pins out in the dressing room and move them lower, which is something I often have to do with tailors (why do they always want to make my pants too short?). Otherwise, no issues at all.

Srujana, I took three lined jackets to Nancy's Alterations in San Jose. She did a really nice job. I'd definitely go back when the need arises. I dropped them off on a Saturday- there must have been five or six people there who were getting anything from a bridesmaid dress altered, waistbands taken in, pants shortened, etc. I thought her price for sleeve alterations was reasonable--the same or slightly less than what Nordstrom had estimated (sight unseen.)

FWIW, the pewter moto from my WIW post cost about $30 to shorten.
http://youlookfab.com/welookfa.....r-its-cold

Hope that helps.

I have a growing pile of items that need to be altered: waist bands that need to be taken in, pants that need to be hemmed, jackets that need seams re-stitched and quite a few tops that need various little tweaks. Nothing earth shattering, but these are all things that cost a good sum of money and I would be crushed if they were ruined.

Anyone have any recommendations? I have Yelped, but I trust YLF opinions more....any help would be very much appreciated!
