Another Sorel boot twin here. I have been walking in mine everyday since November. I live in snowy southwestern Ontario and I find these boots warm, waterproof, lightweight and comfortable. I bought them a half size bigger to accommodate my orthotics and that combined with tightened laces provides plenty of support. I was very pleasantly surprised with these boots.

I see I am late to this discussion but I was going to vote for the Sorels, anyway. For your conditions, I'd say they are perfect.

I LOVED my Sorel runner-boots purchased last year...but...they stretched out eventually and I had to let them go. I would buy them again, though -- seriously. Yours are a sturdier thing than mine were (mine made of waterproofed felted fabric) so I think they will last longer.

Update: the Sorels just had their first official trail outing. The snow/freezing rain stopped and the sun came out about an hour ago so I got in a quick 2.5 miles on our neighborhood woods trails with our dog. Not a problem at all with slippage, even on slush and hills. Finished up as the sun was setting. Thanks for all the feedback on the boots! I’m very happy with my choice.

Thanks, everyone! This has been super helpful.

I took the Sorels out for a 3miler with Sunny yesterday afternoon. No snow but some slush and puddles. 40 degrees and my feet were warm.
They are super comfortable and seem grippy and waterproof (I walked through the puddles rather than avoiding them to test it out). The Kamiks just seem to be overkill for me. I’m sending those back.

The Sorels. I do a lot of hiking here in NY and the Sorels get top ratings. You might also try Eddie Bauer Mountain Ops - that’s my current pair and they’re insulated and waterproof and I love them. I’ve worn them when hiking in temps in the teens and in snow and my feet stayed dry and warm.
The other boots that you show look too tall to be comfortable when hiking a long distance. They also look like they have a lot of fur that might make your feet too hot and sweaty.

I have those exact Sorels and they are workhorses for me here in snowy/frigid Michigan. They do well in keeping out water but aren't as good at keeping my feet warm, which probably won't be as much of an issue for you with your less extreme temperatures. You are correct that the Sorels are like running shoes. I love their lightweight and use them for long dog walks. They are not the most sturdy shoes, though and on rugged terrain would not be my first choice. I do hike with the dog in them on the golf course in the winter. For deep snow and frigid weather I prefer my taller Joan of Arctic Sorels but find them clunky. Very difficult to have it all. Without a lot of now on the ground I also find myself reaching for my Oboz and a warm pair of socks. Good luck!

I have a few pairs of boots that I wear for winter walking. My walks are combination of very steep, icy driveway, road, and woods and I am super specific in my choices.

I don't love the Icebugs, style wise, but they are comfortable for long walks and have metal studs in the sole, so no falling down. <https://www.amazon.com/gp/prod.....#038;psc=1>

I'm on my second pair of Sorels. Mine have a more rugged sole than yours. I climbed Mt. Monadnock on a non-icy day in the first pair but they got ratty after too much time taking care of donkeys at an animal sanctuary. They aren't amazing for temps below about 10, though,

And then I have my tried and true La Canadiennes with shearling lining which are amazing for cold, but will slip on ice.

I have been eyeing those Sorels all winter , but something about them stops me from ordering them. They don't look very substantial, yet they look so cute ! I think they would be great for your winter weather, maybe less so for mine. I've been persevering with my clunkier -yet-more substantial boot (not as high as your Kamik's though, and that shaft height strikes me as being a little clunky for a lot of walking ) because it's what I have . A really heavy boot - like the Kamik's can be tiring to walk in for any length of time.

I feel qualified to comment here because I've spend a fair bit of time this winter tramping around in the bush on a walking path and think I know cold weather

I live in New England and we get a fair amount of snow. I also hike a lot in the winter. I wear Salomon hiking boots that cover my ankles for support on uneven terrain, have Gore-Tex so are warm and waterproof. They also have deep treads for safe walking in snow and ice. I also have Sorrel snow boots which I wear for neighborhood walks on snow but I never wear them in the woods. I think you should look for hiking boots if you are walking on uneven surfaces in the woods with mud, snow etc. I think of them as gear and don’t care how they look. Just how they function and fit. And I wear pants that cover the tops so no snow gets in!

Oh this is very tricky! I purchased those exact Sorels at the beginning of winter this year and although they fit and looked amazing I found them stiff and after a bit of wear in the house, uncomfortable. However, a friend has them and she loves them. She wears them for dog walking and says the warmth and grip are fine.
I am currently wearing Columbia minx shorty boots for snow and slush walking. They come in a higher version as well. They feel like a runner and are quite light. My feet have never been wet and rarely cold. The grip is ok but not hiking boot worthy because they are predominantly a snow boot.

I also have kamiks which I consider a heavy duty snow boot. Mine are similar to the Momentum ones. I find them very roomy and quite warm. My feet have never been cold or wet in them. The grip is better than the Columbia but my beef with them is they are wide and roomy.

I’ve also now taken over my daughters hiking shoe which is similar to the Merrill’s. Not great in snow but I love thé grip.
After this long winded reply I think you need more than one pair to be well accommodated for the various conditions. I also recommended grippers- even a pair that slide over the boot which you can easily keep in your jacket pocket just in case.

Unfrumped, I hear you about that occasional high snow! Fortunately I have good waterproof pants that slip on over layers, and they come down over the tops of boots and zip closed (they got me through Iceland, Greenland, and Antarctica so they are more than sufficient for home!).

I understand about immediate good- feel and ease of lacing- these really add to feeling items are “ yours” snd look forward to using. Do walk around house in them to evaluate for any unexpected pinching or bother. If they’re very comfy, but also “ real” functional gear, you are likely to use in various types of weather, not just snow.

That said, my area is experiencing record cold temps and snowfall— I have 8” or so high lightweight snow boots, not great hikers because not lugged or grippy soles, but ok for a fun snow ramble, that I keep to use every few years, and this week, snow is able to get in over top of boot! But it wouldn’t be worth it for me to get new taller snow boots.

Thanks, cat2, LaPed and Nemosmom! I'm leaning towards the Sorels (they were immediate love when I put them on). You all make good points. NM, ankle support seems to be adequate in the Sorels, maybe not quite as good as my Merrells but I'll think about that when I try them on again. Warmth is great with both. I wear thick socks underneath and even add thin sock liners as a base layer sometimes (Reynauds here so I am super careful). Both are nicely lined so the fit is close but not tight, and the ease of lacing makes the Sorels really easy to lace tighter or looser depending on what I have on underneath. The Kamiks are downright clunky to tighten the laces, which does get on my nerves. Nothing more frustrating than struggling with laces when you're bundled and ready to tackle the outdoors or are sweaty after coming back inside.

I certainly find the Sorels to be more stylish, but when it comes to hiking and snow, all fashion sense goes out the window (for me anyway) :D

Two things would be the maker/breaker for me:

1. How is the ankle support? Hiking on snowy/icy trails is not for the frail of ankle :D

2. Warmth. If my feet are cold, the rest of me is sure to follow. Especially in any case where deeper snow is possible. Stomping around ankle-high in powder can chill my feet quickly... and then I am just miserable.

Oddly, weight of the boot is less a factor in the snow for me, but YMMV.

I’d go with lighter weight and easier to put on, for sure. You’ll reach for them more often, especially since deep snow is rare in your neck of the woods.

I have Sorels and have been literally stunned by what they can get me through. I have never tried Kamins.

I ordered a couple of pairs of hiking shoes that can get me through snowy terrain (now, watch us have five more years with no snow after this!). Before this I hiked once in a pair of Aquitalias that are really not appropriate trail shoes — I slipped and fell twice (good thing I was wearing cushy layers)! I have worn my usual hiking boots in slushy conditions and they are fine, but I could stand to split wears on those boots anyway — they are taking a lot of use, so some dedicated winter hikers will be welcome.

These are more different than I expected.

The Sorels look and feel more like running shoes but reviews indicate they are nicely waterproof. They are super super comfortable, lightweight, and slip on and lace easily.

The Kamiks are taller, a bit bulkier, stiffer and heavier, but still acceptable in comfort. They are more work to lace up (the laces are quite “sticky” in the grommets). They’re definitely more “snow boot” looking.

Both seem plenty warm and fit nicely with the thick socks I wear for winter hiking.

I feel like the Sorels would be more versatile — lower profile and not quite so Nanook of the North, IYKWIM. But I’m wondering if any of you who have more experience with active boots in snowy conditions have anything to say about how each of these might do in the intended conditions. It’s one thing to wear them around the house — quite another to wear them outdoors in wintry conditions.

Any advice?
