Oh, how fun! All I can offer is that sometimes Anthropologie has the odd piece (clothing or shoes) that has baroque elements. Good luck!

I do find them comfortable, though IIRC there's not much padding. They may run about half a size small (the toes are pointed). But the wool uppers stretch to form to the foot, and unlike modern shoes, there's no toe interlining to keep them from stretching. I know Lauren will do exchanges. You do need shoe buckles with them, so don't forget to order them at the same time. The buckles mean they're pretty flexible for foot volume, including adding an innersole if you'd like them. They don't perfectly fit a very narrow or very low volume foot; the buckles can't go quite far enough down the latchets to fasten without making the fabric fold up. But that just means I set the buckles a wee bit more loosely.

What a fun job! I understand not wanting to be too costumey. Fun shoes like this are a good way to incorporate historical elements without being too far out there.

I'm actually in Texas, but we've met several years at Costume College out in Los Angeles. She might be able to advise you if you drop her an email. I know that her shoes are sourced by a lot of stage and opera companies (as well as TV and movies), so she might have some suggestions on sizing or styles based on that as well.

Thanks approprio, you're right that I will have to get a little diy.

Ginger, I was also looking at the Dunmore shoes you have, do you find them comfortable? I would have to wear them on stage. I am a musician specializing in the music from the 16-18th centuries and I dress in a very modern fashion, I don't want to be costumy but I want to incorporate modern elements of historical fashion. I also need to be able to stand and perform in those shoes so comfort is key. That's so interesting that you've met the designer, where are you located?

LOL, approprio. :D

First, I have to say that I love American Duchess shoes. Aren't they gorgeous? I've got my own small collection, though I haven't gotten Pomps yet. I do have these and love them:
http://www.american-duchess.co.....shoe-black
The smaller heel looks a little funny to modern eyes, but it's excellent for 1770s and 1780s, and you'll be seeing it at Colonial Williamsburg. I've been the owner several times and she's awesome, too. Yay for supporting small businesses!

I'm having a little bit of difficulty figuring out exactly what you mean. "Baroque" is a really broad term, and a quick Pinterest search showed at least two variations.
Neo Baroque - 18th century, Marie Antoinette, stays/bodices and tall hair, skirts long or short (panniers or not), cupcake colors, flowers and lace. Example pinboards:
https://www.pinterest.com/wildcharmz/neo-baroque/
https://www.pinterest.com/lani.....y-couture/
Or, Italian-style Baroque - more 17th century, less historical in outline, rich jewel tones, brocades, lots of gold embroidery and jewels. Example pinboards:
https://www.pinterest.com/axo5/baroque/
https://www.pinterest.com/lumu.....on-styles/

Both are very elaborate, maximal looks. I think you're going more for the latter, based on the choice of black Pomps and the inspiration pictures, but toned down (less gold and jewels). Is that right?

Regardless, I agree that DIY is the best way to go. (At least when you don't have a Caroline Herrera budget!) Thrifting and vintage is a really good
start. There's a lot of romantic-ish Gothic-ish stuff around from the
80s and 90s, and longer drapey flowy things from the 70s. All of those
are good bases. If you're going for the rich colors, the 80s and 90s saw lots of beading and sequins. These sorts of items can be (CAREFULLY) cut down and modified. (Never cut a bead thread or they'll all come off!)

But the most important thing to do first is to decide what YOUR interpretation will be. I highly recommend setting up your own pinboard, or otherwise collect inspiration, of exactly what you're looking for. Choose pictures that exemplify the look you want. If it's only a certain element of the picture that you like (color combination, shape of a jacket, neckline shape, etc) make a note of that. When you've got a lot of inspiration, analyze what it is you like. Make a list if you want. The goal is to know what you want before you shop. Then when you sort through the racks of the thrift store, you can identify what will work.

And really, have fun with it! This is a very individual look. It can help to have a particular icon or image to guide at the beginning, but it's really about what you want.

I incorporate a bit of the afrosteampunk into my work life look. I have and still do go over the top in my work life. I think you are easing into it with the shoes. I would then try tops and skirts. I love a ruched skirt. High Drama Baby

Calling Ginger, would Ginger please report to the thread??

I'd suggest going back to the source material: the clothes themselves! Do some research on historical garments to see what people wore in era you're interested in.

Your best bet is DIY, so you could start by customising existing garments, like a full skirt or an empire line dress with details to make them look more authentic. Look around haberdashers for ribbons, buttons, lace and so forth. Vintage shops and flea markets would also be a good source of trinkets. Get creative!

Check out Vivienne Westwood's archives to see what she's done with historical fashion. The romantic looks of Alberta Ferretti seem to fit the bill. Fashion critic Diane Pernet has a very "baroque" look.

You could look at Lolita fashion for some inspiration. I'm not suggesting you go full Gothic Loli or anything, but you may find some interesting crafting ideas for period details. Ditto steampunk.

Good luck! And the shoes look fab!

I'm really looking to inject some baroque or 19th century elements into my look. I don't want to look like I'm wearing a costume and I don't want to look too excentric but I just love history and feel inspired by the beautiful clothing. Fashion is constantly regurgitating the elments of the 1950-1990s don't you think?

I'm starting off with shoes and have found these little beauties and I'm saving for the pompadour french shoes.
http://www.american-duchess.co.....shoe-black
http://www.american-duchess.co.....shoe-black

Does anyone have any suggestions of where to look for modern fashion inspired by historical garments? Or how to jazz up my look for a baroque inspired outfit? I see such things on the runways but they do not easily translate into off-the-rack clothing.
http://irenebrination.typepad......970d-800wi
https://decoratorsbest.files.w.....-new-york-
