Oh Angie, that’s a shame. I wonder if a simple half slip could have worked with it, but you probably already considered that.

UPDATE:

The gorgeous tulle skirt from The Real Real came and went today. It was in pristine condition. New. And fit perfectly! Loved the colour! But the lining was very short so you could see my bare legs under the skirt when I moved and sat! The lining did not go to the length of the hem, IYKWIM. A bad design detail, in my opinion. It really cheapened the look of the skirt. Couldn’t see that from the photo, unfortunately. A real pity.

But it was fun to order, and I will order again!

Thank you for this fab report! I love hearing how the system works and also enjoyed seeing the variety in your "flat lays." Beautiful autumnal outfits with that gorgeous silk shirt!

I have never bought from TRR. I worry it might be hard to get good fits for a shorter frrame. But now I'm intrigued enough to check it out!

Thanks for chiming in, Slimcat, Shevia, Mary Beth, Sal, Tanya, and Sarah! I appreciate your enthusiasm! Shevia, we are birds of a feather when it comes to TRR, but I am excited to bring others into the fold :). I am looking forward to wearing the Marni coat once the weather cools--today it was 80+ F (we actually have the A/C on!), but soon....

Janet, that's a great score! I love MK prints and ordered one of her gorgeous tops with a photographic print, but the sleeves were too narrow (and lined in silk, which was lovely, but it had zero stretch so the sleeves were tiiight!). I am glad you found a lovely version. I think those types of phtographic prints are beyond trends, IYKWIM, and especially for you, since you are a photographer!

Barbara Diane, my sense is that it depends on the fabric, the type of item, and how you like to wear your clothes. For example, for someone who likes a looser fit in tops, at least a few inches larger than the bust measurement is in order, especially for woven tops with no stretch. Knit tops could be more body-skimming. For a skirt, the waist measurement can be the equivalent (your waist measurement = to the listed measurement) or even smaller if the waist is elastic, but the hip measurement on the skirt should be at least an inch or two wider to accommodate being able to sit down (especially if the skirt fabric doesn't have any stretch), and so on.

I have to say, I’ve already adjusted my browsing methodology thanks to you! And I love how you showed the versatility of your new shirt with the flat lays. I need to try that with new items!

I’m happy to report that the Mary Katrantzou top I ordered is a keeper! I’ve always loved those photographic prints even though they aren’t trending anymore — they are very *me* so I’m finally getting one. I realized after a closet edit that my “nicer” (non-tee-shirt) summer tops were a category that was looking a bit sad. It was a good time to take advantage of an end-of-season bargain!

Jonesy, thanks for taking the time to explain your process! I'll take a look at TRR, which I'd never heard of before. I don't know how it will work for petite sizing needs, but having the garment dimensions will help a lot. I'm excited to check it out, and appreciate your post!

Jonesy, thank you for sharing your process with us! I was thrilled to see all the outfits you can make with that blouse - and I'm trying to incorporate that sort of planning and creative thinking into my own closet.

I used to browse TRR all the time! I kind of forgot about them, but I have a beautiful pair of Dolce & Gabbana satin and lace pumps that I get out for special, non-rainy occasions.

My recommendation for shopping resale sites is to make sure the brightness on your laptop or device is all the way up, and enlarge the photos and go over the items carefully.

p.s. - I can't wait to see the Marni coat in action!

Yay, Angie!

Yes, cat2, final sale stuff is a huge gamble, even when it is NWT! Sometimes items arrive with a perfume smell, or a heavy detergent smell, or whatever, and something that's NWT could have been tried on by a previous customer who wore heavy perfume, you just never know :). So I always avoid final sale items, no matter what. Too much of a gamble!

Marlene1, the shipping costs are for the entire order, not individual items.

Thanks - this was very helpful!
One question about shipping and returns that I hope you can answer - do buyers pay the $11.95 shipping (or return) fee per item? Or is it $11.95 per order? (For example, if I ordered 3 sweaters in the same order, would I pay a single shipping fee?)

Angie: I have purchased NWT pieces at another site, and learned that the storage conditions at the original home also really matter. I would only buy returnable NWT items, and be ready to return anything that was not treated with care. I found this out the hard way with a NWT bag that had apparently been stored on a shelf covered in cats. I also received a NWT skirt that had been stretched beyond all recognition — I think someone had tried unsuccessfully to cram into it and then tossed it into the sell pile. I have given up on purchasing resale items, and instead content myself with being the source of lightly used items when I donate my mistakes, rather than the purchaser.

Sally, yes, it does take some adjusting to online shopping! But it sounds like you are dipping your toe in :).

CarolS, I know what you mean about the print on the shirt! TBH I wasn't taken with it right away (I tend to go for dark, murky prints, which I will love instantly), but "hearted" it and then I kept looking at it. I finally decided that it would be a great completer piece, if that makes sense, in terms of being able to move more in the earthy direction with some outfits. And then when I got it, I really loved the quality and saw its potential in lots of outfits.

Shevia, you are The TRR expert! I loved your thread, and I always think of you with your suitcase packed full of fab stuff at your sister's house :). I totally agree with your tip about using a piece that you stumble onto as a way to get to know that particular designer's style. I have learned a lot that way too, and found some designers that hadn't been on my radar.

Thanks, Bijou, for sharing your experiences with TRR from your Australian POV--that amazing McQueen find, wow! Perfect, and I'm sure perfect on you!

Yes, Angie, it can be really fun--I hope you find some perfect items in immaculate condition! Thanks for the coat love; I am excited for fall to come :).

BJ1111, yes, great point! Some pieces are really more collectors' items, and priced accordingly. I know that tv and movie stylists use TRR too, to outfit characters, so there is demand from all sorts of different people for certain items.

Kkards, you definitely have to be a certain type of gambler (or maybe somebody actively reselling stuff) to go for final sales, which I am not :)! Thanks for sharing your experience with TRR. It's a tough balance to wait a bit to see if the price drops, without having it snatched up by someone else, or become final sale/unreturnable. If I see something I really, really love, I won't wait. Other things, I will.

This is so interesting, Jonesy. Thank you for sharing your approach.
I love the shirt - what a fantastic piece and what a bargain.
I have not looked at TRR before - didn´t know they ship outside of the US. I have now downloaded and browsed and I am impressed.

Thank you so much for this excellent tutorial. Between this and shevia’s write up earlier, I’ve learned a lot. And realized that i was taking the wrong approach and looking for/waiting for the lowest price, which also meant it was not returnable. I’ve dipped my toe this year, and I’ve had about a 60% success rate, but as I’ve focused on price (& condition) and not returnabitly, I’ve had a couple of misses, not a big financial loss, but more of a “do i want to do this again” thing.

Agree will @jonesy and @shevia. I buy only excellent or nwt, unless I really fall in love with the item.

TRR is great for one of a kind designer pieces that I could never afford. It’s critical tho that one knows the original price. Rare pieces often have resale prices way more than original price.

Less popular designers can be a good bargain.

Thank you, Jonesy, Roxanna and Bijou, for sharing your wisdom and experiences! It's gamble for sure, and things aren't always what they seem. But it DOES seem fun to shop this way if you are patient, prepared to pay for shipping, and keep your expectations realistic. Over time and with some luck - highly effective in all sorts of ways :)

Jonesy, AMAZING MARNI COAT!!

Excellent post and advice.

Sally, in Australia and NZ we can buy but sell from TRR. I have bought from TRR but note that the cost of shipping is much higher at about $50 per garment. I love Mother jeans and know my size, so even with the extra shipping, I can save money by buying my favourite jeans online.

Angie I bought a HEWI Alexander McQueen denim jean jacket from TRR and it was listed as having some wear. I am sure it was hardly worn at all as the buttons were so stiff that they appear to have never been done up before. I was so thrilled to get such a beautiful item at a great price.

Fantastic post and I was nodding along all the way!
Regarding condition - I would stick with very good and above. Anything listed as no signs of wear is a good bet, but very good is usually close to that in my experience. I have had only one experience where the condition of an item disappointed me and that was years ago.

Another trick is to search for something general (purple skirt for example) and scroll through to learn about designers who were not on your radar. This also ups my thrifting game, but I realize most people are not that devoted .
