Pirouette, I agree about European style from what I have seen. Interestingly I found Amsterdam had the most interesting style compared to Barcelona and Paris. Maybe due to the high concentration of youth and compact nature of the city but people (often whizzing past me on bikes which is how I surmised they were local or at least students there) had a bit more interesting variety of proportions and colour. I think I also fell in love with the shopping most there - the tiny storefronts of the original commercial streets lend themselves to interesting and curated shops (there are similar areas in Barcelona and Paris, of course).

But as an off-season tourist of course I mostly saw outerwear It’d be interesting to return in spring someday!

I’m drooling over the Marimekko tee. It is perfection, and definitely channels Gaudi. What a great pick for Barcelona.

I have recently returned from a week in South of France and like you went with a carry on case. The weather was warm and sunny ( compared to Dublin) so I ended up buying a light jacket as my light puffer was way too warm. Like you mentioned the younger women wore wide jeans and trainers with long wool coats with tie belts. Older women over 30s wore straight jeans and boots so I fitted in perfectly. No bright colours on anyone mostly black grey and various shades of brown. I really enjoy seeing how people dress in other countries but have come to realise that in Europe fashion is very similar in most cities

What a great capsule - well done on taking the opportunity and travelling!!

After my recent trip I concur with the accessories being important - for me it was beanies and hat, but I did wear my scarves often too. Sneakers really work in so many settings now and especially if you have waterproof ones.

I agree with Carla, that rich green really lifts the palette! The green bag and scarf would make any combination look stylish and intentional. I think you chose really well and bonus points for getting it all in a carry-on.

I also wanted to add -- you had the perfect weather conditions and time frame to pack light, I think. It would be easier still in summer, of course, when you don't need to worry at all about getting cold.

My packing challenges always come when I have multiple types of activity (e.g. work, plus hiking, plus some dressy events) and/or variable weather, and/or no option to do laundry while away.

We're planning a spring trip to London and Vienna and I'm already wondering how I will manage it all and if I can do it with carry on. I suspect not, but at minimum I want to bring a carry on sized bag vs. a bigger one, because we'll be doing a lot of to-ing and fro-ing.

What a fabulous efficient capsule, Jules -- and how fun that you were able to take this trip with the family!

This looks like casual luxe -- beautifully coordinated, with just enough crisp classic pieces to ground it along with hits of pattern and colour for interest. Brava!

We had an unplanned work-related opportunity to travel as a family to Barcelona coinciding with my husband's 50th birthday and grabbed the chance! This was my third off-season trip to urban Europe in two years, and my first attempt to pack light for carry-on only! For reference, I am not a light packer, preferring to have options, and usually as a family we pay to check at least one larger bag to share and have room for souvenirs on the way back. But this was to be a short trip of only 5 full days, in sunny and dry transitional weather of 5-15 C, so I decided carry-on would have to suffice (I did pack my large Le Pliage tote for souvenirs).

Learnings from past trips that I leveraged:
1) Third piece toppers are mostly wasted unless I can use them as a coat on milder days. We are constantly walking and in and out of shops and attractions - "outfits" just aren't as relevant as are outerwear, comfort and practicality. I did bring one blazer and wore it as my coat on a warmer day, but it wasn't really necessary.
2) Similarly, stylish sneakers are good enough for footwear. I chose to forgo boots and bring two pairs: adidas, which were ubiquitous there, and my old leather converse, which I have made slip on with xpand laces and have the benefit of working in rain and even snow when transiting to and from the airport here.
3) Remembered last minute to pack a hat, warm scarf and gloves! These accessories keep me warm when walking all day in variable temperatures and conditions, and are so easy to pop on and off. I'm very sick of my light weight puffer and really wanted to wear the Brooks Brothers mac, the accessories made that doable.
4) Silk scarf to add a bit of dressy style when I do want it, perhaps at dinner.
5) Threw in my Lululemon belt bag for when I am sick of carrying a loaded leather day bag, and also for pickpocket security.
6) Cashmere sweater for layering warmth at night, or just in case. Sometimes I just want something cozy when come back to our rental after a long day and the heat hasn't kicked in yet. I would have chosen my green one instead for this capsule but it wasn't clean.

Overall I was very happy with this minimal capsule. I chose to base it on wide leg jeans since the weather was dry, which turned out to match the prevailing street style we saw (granted on mostly younger women teens to 30s, but I didn't feel out of place). The denim joggers worked well for the plane. I threw in the Marimekko tee shirt because I felt the organic, colourful pattern echos Gaudi a bit, and was happy I did so for the brief moments the weather cooperated - my kids agreed and took this picture of me at Park Guell.

Thanks for reading along - I am hoping that by making a Finds capsule and writing all this out, I will remember I can indeed pack light quite happily!

I'll come back later to add some comments with more details from the trip itself
