I kinda love the Trina Turk Barbie.

And it took all my self-control not to buy the DVF Barbie!

I played with stuffed animals a lot more than dolls when I was a kid. I never had a Barbie, but I did have a Suntan Skipper, Barbie's little friend. She had tan lines. Guess that wouldn't fly today!

i'm with diana...i thought barbie was a proto-feminist who had a cool car...i'll bet it was even a manual tranny.

also agree with dana, barbie sells. want mattel to make different dolls, don't buy barbies.

My daughter had a scrub brush for a doll for a while. I think Elisabeth is on to something there.

FWIW, I'm not sure that young children are even aware of Barbie's unnatural proportions. Anything vaguely human-shaped will be accepted as a human playtoy. They happily play with little lego people whose square legs and claw hands are really stretching the boundaries of "human-shaped".

Also, Diana has a point.

Rachy, Barbie creeps me out much less than baby dolls. I kind of like that she's not realistic at all. I had barbies growing up, and I never thought, that's how a woman's body should look. Besides, she had cool jobs, a glam life, and she never married that loser Ken. So, you know, kind of feminist even. Much more so than teaching your five year old to change diapers.

You know... this may be horrible... but real Barbie creeps me out in the same way Victorian baby dolls creep me out. It's like, you don't play with people; feels so wrong.

Speaking as someone who has worked with toy manufacturers, probably entirely practical concerns are "stopping Mattel."

Barbie, as she is, is hugely successful. Plus she has an enormous legacy of clothing and accessories designed to fit her current frame which would not fit a different model. Rolling out a new line with different bodies, modified clothing, associated marketing and promotions, product placement in stores - that's a huge expenditure which market research shows would not pay back. People LIKE the weird unnatural Barbie. They have never bought into any of the modified "more real" dolls on the market.

Mattel is a business.

I can't help wondering if we can really expect toy manufacturers to bear the burden of the self-esteem of every single one of their customers. Surely Barbie is not the sole representation of womanhood in every child's home. And if she is, is that Mattel's fault, really...?

I too wonder if given a choice what the youngest girls getting their first Barbiw would choose on their own... Like if we gave two year olds a choice...
