Marianne, I'm hijacking your post to ask the lovely Renata a question I've always wondered! :)
Renata - I have very labor-intensive hair (naturally curly, thick, etc etc-) and my stylists often have to block out extra time to do my highlights. The salons tend to charge me extra, even 2x, for the thickness (for 'extra' product). I tend to do a 15 % tip. Is that sufficient or should I be bumping it up? I am extremely loyal when I find a good stylist. Any inside advice you care to offer appreciated! Thanks!

I have my own shop to, and if someone wants to leave me a tip, I never refuse.
Just do what you think is wright to you, it doesn't matter much, I don't think anyway. Some people leave me big tips, some none, and that is ok in my book.
But I do charge few bucks for a bang trim!

Thank you very much for your input, ladies! I guess it wouldn't hurt to ask. I do feel bad about not tipping, because they do spend the time. That makes being bangless more economical

I never charge for a bang trim and often refuse tips from regular clients...It really isn't necessary. But I am self employed and my own boss, those who work for others may have a minimum charge for such things...beyond their control.

You could simply ask what the policy is for bang trim between appts.:)

I think I would because the stylist has taken a bit of time out of her day for you. I think $5 sounds good.

I've been tipping for a 'free bang trim'. I just don't feel right not leaving a tip. Now granted, it's not as large a tip as when I go for the full haircut, but it's something. I give my stylist a $5 tip for a "free" bang trim.

I do the same. I leave a generous tip during the cut. I have been going to her for years so she knows she has my repeat business. Recently, I needed just a shape up haircut for a photo shoot and she offered to do a second haircut the week after the photo shoot when we could go shorter. I usually go in for one to two bang trims in between cuts. I also sometimes buy product from her - she gets a comission when her clients buy product.

Does everyone else do the same? (bumping for more input)

I don't tip, but I make a point to thank him/her and say, "see you in __ weeks for our next appointment!" If the trim is free and you're going back for regular cuts I think you are okay.

I was curious, are you expected to tip for a "free" bangs trim? I recently switched stylists, and I am not sure what the rules are. My old stylist said trims are free (I even tried to tip her the first time and she refused), but she had her own business. The new stylist works for a salon, and trims are supposedly free. Am I expected to tip? How much? Or do I just leave a big tip after the haircut? I'd appreciate any advice.
