I'm going to join the dissenters. I admit I have not bought much from the more fashion forward offerings at BR this year. They don't suit me. I've been disappointed in the quality of some items, and I don't like the textures. My local store has been black, white and gray for over a year now, with occasional splashes of too bright or too pallid of color. (Pallid I seldom wear, but the word always makes me think of Poe--that pallid bust of Pallas--must be the season, Nevermore!)

I've always relied on BR for pants that fit me, [Martin fit] jackets that are semi-tailored and good quality that last and last, and knits that last in interesting colors. I haven't spent much there this year. I miss the long-sleeved good quality tees that last and last--I still have a few. This year's tees are too big and too droopy in my regular size. I did buy several pairs of skinny jeans that have worked well for me, and a jacket reduced to $37 from $150 that I have only worn once. Maybe when the weather cools off I can wear it more.

Show me some color, BR!

i was not surprised. even thought I liked much of the BR offering this year, something was "off"...and it felt like the designs and production where often at odds. retail is a tough business, you get a report card from your customers every day. I hope that Marissa Webb can make her line work, and look forward to shopping from her line and BR.

I hadn't shopped at BR in a number of years but in the past year I've probably bought close to a dozen pieces. Not everything I ordered (I bought more online than in store) worked for me but most things did.

It's disappointing to me too. On the whole, BR looked better this past year - lots more fun fashion. My clients have been very happy with their BR stash - and we have shopped more at BR than ever.

I have to say that BR's fit of fashionable merchandise can be a little off sometimes - sloan pants are too tight! But that is a criticism of ALL fashion at the moment - which becomes very apparent when you dress different body types for a living like I do. There are too many tight bottoms and oversized tops. Bring back the tailoring.

Spring BR was better than Fall, so that makes me sad. I HOPE things jazz up before the end of the year.

I was sad to see this news, because I love Marissa Webb's clothing and I really enjoyed the shift in BR's offerings. But I have to agree with Suz - I got excited about things online, but when I tried them on, they rarely came home with me. Some looked nice online but were cheaper fabrics in person. Some were amazing but just didn't fit me. But some were just right, and I bought more at BR this year than I have in a decade.

And I'm still mourning the leather moto vest that got away. By the time I decided I wanted to splurge, it was sold out.

I'm attaching my favorite finds from BR this year, and the vest I didn't manage to get! The boiled wool top is an incredible wardrobe staple for me now. It's much, much better in person.

This was in Inge's Fashion News round up a few days ago too.

I liked the direction BR was going but didn't buy anything. I do feel they could have marketed Marisa Webb better, on line in particular. I would have liked to see outfits she created, designs she had a hand in, her edits, her recommendations for the season. Every time I looked at BR, there seemed to be no connection with this talented woman with amazing style. Such a missed opportunity I think.

It seems like large corporations have largely lost their patience. Can a new direction really be evaluated in a year? What would happen if they stayed the course and focused on tweaking what works?

I'm going to take a middle line. For the past two seasons, I loved the way a lot of the clothes looked. That is, I loved them in the images online. I loved them in theory.

But something would always be off for me. If I liked the fit and cut of the item, it wasn't available in a colour that would work for me. Or else the fabrication was off somehow. Culottes that looked great in the photo but turned out to be made of non drapey material. Etc.

I did get some typical staple items (Sloan trousers). But other than that, I don't think I bought a single item from BR all spring and summer -- and that, for me, is highly unusual.

However, some of this had to do with the fact that I am not in wardrobe building phase so much as maintenance, and I still have some serviceable BR items from years past.

Another dissenter reporting in. Although I thought their clothes were a little boring before Webb, at least you could use them for basics and pair them with trendier items. I haven't liked the offerings over the past year--it seemed like everything was oversized and boxy, and that doesn't work well with my body type. I felt like there wasn't a wide-enough variety of fits. Also, it seems like a lot more of the clothes are dry-clean only now.

I have to be the dissenter here. BR used to be my mainstay. I bought several/many items each year. Not so this year. One item...that's it, and it was free with BR rewards. I have a ton of BR rewards left to spend, but I can't find anything I want. Buying things for teenage son at Gap and ON instead. I don't know where BR is headed from here, but I certainly am hoping for more things that work for me...bring back the Hampton fit pants!

That's too bad, I am really enjoying their fall collection and have bought several pieces after years of not purchasing anything from them. I liked that the pieces were trendier this season, and actually they fit me FAR better than they have in years past. Guess I better scoop up a few more of the pieces I've been eyeing, since they won't be continuing in this direction.

CEO's comment of "It’s not as versatile or flattering as it should be given the price point" makes me think they just want to go back to more conventional clothing, which is unfortunate. I personally won't have any desire to purchase any of that, and I really appreciated that they were offering trendy and trendy-lite pieces at a more affordable price than many other places. Boo to implementing a fast-fashion strategy

I agree Lisa. The collections were never represented in full here (smaller store) , and there are far , far too many pieces available at any given time that are versions of each other. They have also trained their customers to never shop at regular price.......so what is the real value of those clothes? I didn't get the impression she was necessarily fired, just moved out of daily designing. But what do I know?

They said it's been a year and a little bit since she started. I like her ideas and particularly in terms of color (I am all over the green this season, and was looking for a reason to buy the BR yellow suede pumps). Banana Republic seems to be looking to go a little more fast fashion, and move away from regular collections, to amp up its sales. I think they have too many items in general (under Webb or otherwise), many of which are dull, and they should have edited down to to the best pieces, maybe releasing them incrementally so that they don't have to rush into markdowns so quickly.

I'm surprised! I, too, thought BR clothing looked great recently, especially this fall, which has more of her influence than previous collections. Their fit has fortunately worked well for me.

It seems like a hasty, premature decision to let her go. Had she even been there for one year?

I don't think much of her influence was even felt - maybe in the big flagship stores in the US and on line where the more interesting pieces are sold, but the everyday stuff I saw in "my" store wasn't really that much different than whoever was designing the collection prior to her. Although I own a fair number of BR pieces, I remain frustrated by lack of consistency in quality and fit. I know that has nothing to do with her but.....

I understand from what I read that she's still on board in a less hands-on way going forward ....I guess her own line is what's of greater interest to her (and understandably so)
