I have a few pair of the smoking flats (and ballet flats, too) and prefer the look of the smoking flat...they are also much more comfortable on my fussy feet, too. I actually have a dead ringer for the one you have pictured here....love them! I rarely wear skirts and dresses so I wear mine with pants/jeans of all kinds!

Good points all. The slippers definitely look "heavier" and yet to me either more casual or less, if that makes sense, depending on the outfit. With dressier pants or fancy skirt, I'd find them more formal, but with leggings or a denim skirt, maybe less so than the ballet flats. How much difference an inch or two of leather makes!

I have substantial calves and ankles and would not feel cute wearing a smoking flat with a dress or skirt. It might be very different for someone with very slender ankles and calves.

For me the pointed toe flats are the shoe that I'd wear with all the things you mention. I have slipper flats but wear them almost exclusively with straight jeans or rolled boyfriends.. I also like the colors best in the pointed ballet flats.......more black and greys than brown.

Ah, I can't say the s------ word, so I say "slipper flats". I also call the others "pointy-toed flats" because ballet to me means not just any flat, but the rounded toe.
I wear both, but it so depends on style of both the shoe and the bottoms. The pointy-flats tend to work better with skirts at my age as the other can look dowdy on me, but they are not as comfortable. A slight heel can help the slipper "flats" look a little dressier, as can lighter colors (with nude leg or hose).
With pants I would wear both, but then will try to wear the most comfortable one, so more likely to wear slipper flat or loafer for roomier toe box.

I agree with rachy as well. Smoking slippers are more trendy, more current than classic ballet slippers. You can wear them both with the same things. I also like that smoking slippers are easier to wear with socks in my cold climate.

I think it very much depends on the style of the smoking slipper, as there are so many variations. Some of them have a higher vamp, some a lower one, while some lean more toward a loafer and others more toward a flat. Generally speaking, the smoking slipper is more on-trend, but the ballet flat would be more feminine and probably coordinate better with skirts or dresses. Still, with the right shoe, I'd choose the smoking slipper - even to wear with dresses and skirts.

I like the looks of them both, but the ballet flats would never stay on my feet. So that might be something to consider.

I agree with rach, the smoking slippers are definitely a more trendy silhouette at the moment. I think they're a bit more casual, too, although the distinction is a fine one maybe, and depends as much on fabrication and print as the shape. I would say that the ballet flats are more versatile, and dressier, especially if they are pointy-toe like the ones you have above.

I got a pair of b/w print smoking slippers last fall, and I find I don't wear them much with skirts. They just feel frumpy that way. I think they're nice with jeans and pants. There's the whole high versus low vamp thing, to do with proportions and lengthening the appearance of your leg line. I know Angie's done some posts on this in the past.

I guess the smoking slippers are a tad more masculine, in that they were originally a male garment, not that I see many guys wearing them today. I for sure don't see guys wearing pointy-toed ballet flats, though (unless they're presenting as a woman, of course).

To my eye, the smoking slipper flats have a more wintery feel to them. I also think that ballet flats are better with skirts. But that's just me... I have both

Which would you wear with straight leg jeans? Leggings and a tunic? A swishy skirt? A pencil skirt?

I'm thinking the ballet flats are a little more versatile, but educate me, please? What other words would you use to describe the differences? Masculine/feminine? Seasonal?
